Digital audio out to headphone converter?

someone

I have a "digital audio out" port on my TV that takes a digital audio out cable. I want to listen to the TV through my headphone that has a standard headphone jack. I have the white and red ports that I currently use through a converter that converts the two cables into a headphone jack port, but the sound doesn't seem surround sound and nice. Is there a converter or anything that converts "digital audio out" to a headphone port? Will the sound from the "digital audio out" sound better than the white and red ports that I currently use to listen to the TV? Any suggestion and insight will help. I just want to get better surround sound (nice audio) from my TV. My TV doesn't have headphone port that some more expensive TVs have.

Answer
The digital audio will sound better, but a headphone amp that accepts an S/PDIF digital signal will be expensive, and may not do a good job of mixing 5.1 channels down to two.

It might be cheapest to buy a used $100 receiver on eBay with digital input and plug your headphones into that. That would also give you the option to attach good speakers, which will sound much better than your TV.

Another option is the Behringer MS20 or MS40 speakers, which accept digital input and have a headphone jack. These will also sound much better than your TV speakers.

Recording guitar amp onto PC?

somone

Ive heard mixed opinions on this, some say if I simply plug my amp's output into my sound cards mic in then I will end up blowing my sound card, and also possibly my amp/computer itself?

http://www.gearslutz.com/board/low-end-theory/356897-plugging-guitar-amp-into-computer.html says I can't? other questions on Y!A say its fine?

So, is it safe to plug my amp into my sound card's mic in or do I need special equipment to record. Its a 15w Marshall MG-FX by the way, sound card is a Creative x-fi? The amp's output is headphone output which im guessing wouldn't exactly be overkill to a sound card?

Thanks

Answer
No, your amp will NOT overload your audio card, even if you DONT use the headphone output. Your mic input doesn't receive power like that and neither does your audio card. They only receive the audio signals being put through.

Headphones? Electric Guitar?

Q. My husband wants headphones for his electric guitar or amp or something. Can any headphones work? What are the best? How much do they usually run? Where can I buy them at?

Answer
Ok. You can get anykind of headphones that you want as long as you get an adapter for the 1/8 inch jacks to the standard 1/4 inch guitar jack. If you have no idea what i just said, Write this down, go to a radio shack (Or some other electronics store) and tell them that you want a 1/8 in. to a 1/4 in adapter. Here is a picture of one...It's the big one on top.

http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2062463&cp=&sr=1&origkw=1%2F4+inch&kw=1%2F4+inch&parentPage=search

I Did this instead of having to buy specialty headphones so i can use them for both music and guitar. if you already have a good pair of headphones, just use those. if you don't go here...

This one actually comes with that adapter.

Hope i could help.

headphones for an electric guitar?

Fungus Gre

Do such things exist? Will I really need to buy a mini amp or w/e? I'm going to be heading to college, and I don't want to disturb anybody, but I still want to bring my electric guitar. So, I really don't need the headphones in the first place, but if I want to mess around with my keyboard at a later time w/o disturbing anybody, they'd be helpful.
So, any products out there that can just plug into the out-put of most electrical instruments?

Answer
You need a headphone amp like this one:

Can I use Beats By Dre Headphones to mix vocals?

Q. My KRK RP5 monitors crashed on me and won't work for some odd reason and I'm really low on money to go buy a new set so I was wondering if I can use the studio beats by dre or the new MIXR beats

Answer
It's not a great idea to mix on headphones because with monitors, you hear the content from each channel in both ears, and also you want to know how the music will sound in an open environment (though it's good to check the mix on headphones and other sound systems). But of course using headphones to mix is better than not at all I suppose, or using crappy consumer speakers. If you are just mixing for fun and not trying to market your music it's no big deal though.

Headphones don't play vocals ?

Mack

Ok I have some Notorius B.I.G headphones which are good quality but after a week the vocals didn't play and the music sound like its underwater.ive gone through 6 pairs of headphones over the past couple of months and I'm sick of this same problem! Is it my iPod jack? I just don't want to buy another pair of headphones so is there any solution?

Answer
You're not getting one of the channels. Try using another set of headphones. If the problem persists it's your iPod jack. If not then it's in the headphones. Could be something simple such as lack of contact or bad wiring. If one side is louder than the other that makes it very obvious, however that "underwater" sound you're describing is consistent with that as well. But without seeing it or hearing it I can't be sure to the exact cause.

Good brand of headphones?

jack

I'm looking for good headphones or earbuds with good bass. Like skullcandy. Do NOT recommend things like beats by dre, sennheiser, shure, or bose. I'm not looking for professional sounds. Just sturdy listening devices with good bass. I'm a 14 year old male thanks :) under 40 dollars please

Answer
BTW Skullcandy are not 'Good headphones or earbuds' they're the joke of the headphone world. Build quality and sound quality are a joke!

Sennheiser are a good brand. I should know, I've owned over 30 pairs of Sennheiser headphones, and only one pair of Skullcandy headphones. There's a reason for that!!

http://portal.fakeheadphones.com/index.php?topic=73.msg201#msg201 - Some of my Sennheiser Collection (scroll down to read my thoughts on Skullcandy - includes pics)

I used to buy Technics headphones @ £20, when I bought my first pair of Sennheiser headphones (PX30 @ £15) I thought the world had changed. Yes they were cheaper, but the sound quality from the Senn's open my ears to real sound, real music.

Given that you've discounted the best brands/options for yourself, It's like saying; I want a supercar, but I don't want a Lambo, Ferrari, Porsche, Bugatti, Pagani etc. Recommend me Daewoo Matiz instead - http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=daewoo+matiz&hl=en&client=firefox-a&hs=lYN&rls=org.mozilla:en-GB:official&prmd=imvnsr&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=GLUvT5D-A420hAeds5X4Dg&ved=0CFsQsAQ&biw=1440&bih=683&sei=H7UvT_qvMYHPhAfDtYj2Cg

I'm afraid (from limited experience) if you keep on going for rubbish brands, you'll be back here again very soon asking again for another recommendation because you invested in headphones/earphones with rubbish quality.

Good quality doesn't mean 'expensive' and I would recommend Sennheiser to you, however for some reason you've automatically discounted them??? Any reason? I've only owned 30 pairs of Sennheiser's, five or so pair of Sony, nine pairs fo Ultrsone's, I like to put my money in decent (not costly) products, hence 30+ pairs fo Sennheiser headphones.

I wish you the best, but I want you to really enjoy your music and $40 is a lot of money. Please don't waste that $40 on Skullcandy or another bad quality brand. Invest that $40 in something that'll

I'd also add the Grado iGrado headphones, if you can find a pair within your budget.

The very best to you my friend, but please invest in something that you deserve!

Best inexpensive headphones to buy 40 dollars and under?

NO Earbuds They bother my ears

Answer
If REAL quality is an issue, please go for REPUTABLE brands only such as B&W, Sennheiser (most affordable), Shure, Grado, Denon, AKG, Audio-Technica, Etymotic or Beyerdynamic. Things like Klipsch, Sony, Panasonic, JVC and Philips are ONLY "okay-ish" indeed.

Bose Tri-Port Around Ear Headphones?? Koss UR-40??

schedule

I'm considering buying a pair of these (pictured here: http://www.onheadphones.com/images/content/product/bose-triport-around-ear-headphones/large/p_triport_l_s.jpg) and was looking for the input of current/past users. What do you like or dislike about them? I've heard that these headphones tend to break. Is that true in your experience? Also, what other headphones would you recommend for someone who wants over-the-hear, around ear (circumaural) headphones? I was considering the Koss UR-40's, any opinions?

Answer
Hi. Anything by Bose i try to avoid. In my opinion, Stax Electrostatic headphones are the best available .They are also the most expensive. Sennheiser, in my opinion, make the best Dynamic Headphones. Over the years i have used both types of headphones. I am not familiar with the Koss but they appear to be well made.

How much are you willing to spend on them?

Here are some Sennheiser 'phones to look at :

xbox headphones for under $40?

Bob

hey, i want some new xbox headphones for christmas because my old ones are falling apart. i want the best one i can get for about $40 or less. any exact name suggestions?

Answer
You can definitely get some pretty good one for less than $40. I'm no expert in American currency to my estimation it would be about $30 for the Turtle Beach XLC. Good headset, I have one. It's not wireless, but you can plug it into the TV and it picks up game audio as well as communication. Plus you save a couple of quid for that.

I'm new to headphones and I've only had standard apple ear buds.

Answer
If you're new, chances are, you won't be able to differentiate between headsets; unless, of course they are simply terrible head phones. Beats are always a good option, though they are expensive. There are other fantastic brands, just do a google search! If I was at my computer, I would do the search for you; however, I'm at work :$

Best headphones for ps3 ?

The

Answer
best depends on the buyer , what's comfortable , affordable and sounds best , and the ps3 does not actually use headphones ( those are for audio only ) , the ps3 uses a headset ( includes a mic for voice chat )

I prefer to use the sony wireless stereo headset ( also available in the pulse model ) because it's the cheapest wireless stereo headset you can buy and sounds pretty good for a cheap $99 headset .
the other main brands are tritton ( maybe the best but also the most expensive at $269 and up for their wireless models ) and turtle beach which are affordable but also wired so you have to sit closer to the console and the wired ones are hard to connect and set up properly

these stereo headsets are nice because they put the game audio and voice chat to the headset but in use they do not allow any sound from the tv so are not usable in some circumstances .
you can also use pretty much any usb mono headset ( one earpiece and a mic ) or any bluetooth headset , the best bluetooth would have to be the sony official ps3 headset , great sound and automatic synch .

PS3 headphones convertor?

Cod LOVER

hey all i have a pair of headphones that have a 3.5mm jack to connect to stuff. i wanted to know that if i buy a rca to 3.55mm adaptor would i be able to use them for my PS3

Answer
no , you can't just plug a ps3s audio output into headphones , without an amplifier you won't get sound . plugging into a tv or stereo gets the sound through a processor and amplifier .

if you want a headset to chat go buy a usb or bluetooth one , if you just want to hear the game sounds through a headset buy a tv or stereo with headphone input or the specially designed ps3 headsets .

i need good (cheap) bass headphone that look cool?

okachowwa

I really want some over-ear headphone that have like swagga (not to sound stupid) if you know what i mean. I like it when they have like really strong bass (like beats those bass are amazing but i know cheap ones won't be as good lol) and if they were $30 or under that'd be nice.
And do skull candies have good bass? i really like the good bass

Answer
Sennheiser 212 pro's are the best you'll get if you want something "good" and with bass. Dr dre beats are junk for the price. Sure they can sound good but you're. Paying all for the name not the headphone. The sennheisers are 50 bucks. Below that you got your basic normal headphones no matter what they advertise. The sony xb700's are awesome though. Huge cans, you'll look like a real dj, not to mention awesomebass. 80 bucks for those

Cheap Headphones?

Metalgods6

Why do cheap headphones sound so soft and the sound is so light and tinny? (I.E. No Bass)

Answer
many, many reasons. In ear ear-phones often fail to produce bass anyways, unless you look at shure e series which has outside the ear bass generator.

But in any case, it is due to the cheap parts. Not enough movement of the speaker to create the umph effect. Furthermore, you really don't want bass in cheap headphones beacuse these cannot truly produce the treble, mid-range and highs to compliment the bass. The base would completely kill any enjoyment you're getting out of these.

TigerDirect has really good Logitech noise-cancelling headphones for $49. Shure e2C are another good choice.

What are the best headphones for around 60 dollars?

Cameron

I am pretty desperate for some headphones. I've been looking at the Skullcandy Hesh or the skullcandy skullcrushers. Between those two, which should I get? And also, if you have any other suggestions*please tell and I'm looking to spend about 60 dollars on them. They need to look good and have good quality. BTW, I LOVE MY BASS. I listen to dubstep and such. HELP APPRECIATED :)

Answer
Neither, both those are fashion "gimmicks" with a very poor sound quality. Please go for reputable brands only such as Sennheiser, Shure, Grado, Denon, AKG, Etymotic or Audio-Technica.

If you had 60 dollars would you buy Beats tour earphones or Levi jeans ?? ?

best pair of inexpensive headphones?

therabidli

I'm looking for a good quality pair of relatively inexpensive headphones. I want ear bud ones. Something that will stay in my ear good even while running.

I've gone through 2 pairs of the 16.99 skullcandy ones from walmart. I heard skullcandy was good and for 16.99 the sound quality was great but twice now one or both of the earbuds have developed a faulty connection. I thought about maybe getting the slighty more expensive skullcandy earbuds but Idk? I don't know what the difference is. Any other ideas?

Answer
look i believe that electronics are just like cars! the more expensive they are the more durable they become!

nevertheless it still depends on your usage! sometimes things are not that important and not worth to pay much for them! therefore, you know yourself better

For example, i always go jogging and walking everyday with my ipod! there for i bought a pair of expensive Bose Headphones 3 yrs ago and they are still perfect. However, for my laptop sometimes i talk over the phone with my parents (oversees) through skype .... but this lasts for a few minutes and happens every three to four months .... so i bought a pair of cheap headphones from China Town not even worth $10 ... even less!

i hope you got my point!

best studio headphones?

Mark

I live in a tiny apartment and no longer have the luxury of my former studio, so . . . I am in need of some SERIOUSLY accurate studio headphones to do premixing on. I still have my studio monitors and use them once the mix is close, but I have to get most of the work done quietly. I have tried several Sony, Sennheisers and a couple others, most in the $100 to $200 range that just don't cut it. The closest I have found, in my opinion, are the Sennheiser HD 202's which are relatively inexpensive but fairly accurate when reproduced on my rockets/sub. I also use Alesis monitors to double check sound - and again, the HD 202's are close. What do you think would be the best, preferably not $500+. I have worked in world class studios, The Plant, Featherstone, etc, so if you have not real studio experience, I still want to hear your input, but am really seeking info from studio folk. THANKS!

Answer
Hey, Mark

There are a wide selection of headphones available on the market at the moment, and for the most part, the quality of the sound and craftmanship will depend on the price that you are willing to spend. On the lower price range (less than $50), you will be able to find some fairly decent headphones that will be perfect for somebody that is just planning to listen to music on their iPod or computer, and are not full fledged audiophiles. In the medium price range ($50-150), you will get a good selection of amazing quality headphones that would be perfect for nearly everyone that is not involved with music professionally. The sound quality of these headphones are going to be suberb, should cancel out nearly all background noise, and will be of a quality craftmanship that is going to last for a very long time. On the more expensive end of things ($150 and up), you are going to find professional quality headphones. For the normal person this is going to be complete overkill as they provide a quality of sound that is amazing, but is usually only sought after by professionals that are working on their own music (or the type of people who make sure their house is hooked up with the best speaker systems on the market).

Depending on the amount you are willing to spend, my top five choices (from cheapest to most expensive) would be:

Sennheiser HD 202 II Professional

http://headphones.respectablereviews.com/sennheiser-hd-202-ii-professional/

This model provides good insulation against background noise and has a solid bass range and response time. Perfect for somebody looking for a low-priced set of quality headphones.

Sennheiser RS120

http://headphones.respectablereviews.com/sennheiser-rs120/

These are very affordable for wireless headphones. They feature an open-ear system and a strong bass response. Since they are wireless, you don't even have to be in the same room as what is transmitting the sound, giving you ultimate flexibility while listening to music. Very lightweight and a high quality. I have this set for using around my home.

Sennheiser HD280 Professional

http://headphones.respectablereviews.com/sennheiser-hd-280-pro/

These are well into the midrange of quality headphones. These ones are corded, but provides much better sound quality than the RS120. They provide up to 32 dB attenuation of outside noise, so you don't have to worry about much from background noise, even in somewhat noisy environments.

Beats by Dr. Dre Solo HD

http://headphones.respectablereviews.com/beats-by-dr-dre-solo-hd/

These are in the high-end of the spectrum of headphones. They are very comfortable and can produce a top-notched sound quality. If you are looking for something that is "in-style" and provides you with some of the best sounds that you can find at this price range, then these are the headphones for you.

Bose Quietcomfort 15

http://headphones.respectablereviews.com/bose-quietcomfort-15/

I use these when I am playing live venues. They are some of the best headphones you can buy at the moment, are very comfortable when wearing for many hours at a time (even in hot, sweaty clubs), block out almost all background noise and provide nearly unmatched sound quality. For somebody looking for professional quality headphones, or with a big budget for the best money can buy, then these are the headphones for you.

The most important thing while choosing the headphones, is the consider what you will be using them for and don't over estimate how much quality you actually need. If you are looking for something to use on the bus or just while you're hanging out, listening to music, you probably don't need top of the line Bose. Good luck, Mark, and I hope you find the perfect set!

sound problem in my new headphones?

sahand

well, I just bought a new headphone yesterday, when I tested it at home, I found out this headphone has problems with low quality sounds with low bitrate, when I play a low quality video clip, or song, the sound is terrible, really low volume, even if I put it on max volume, it is too low, or some instruments in that music fades and I cannot hear them...
but has no problem with high quality songs, for example 320 bitrate...
so what is the problem?? Is the problem about headphone itself or...????
pleaaase help...

Answer
It can't possibly be a headphone problem - your headphones have no idea what bitrate your songs are.

With bad headphones, it doesn't really matter whether your files are high- or low-quality, since the headphones will turn everything into mush anyway. Better headphones, however, will be more revealing of problems in your source files. You'll actually get to hear the difference between high bitrate and low bitrate.

The solution is not to use low-quality files... Storage space is so cheap these days that anything less than 320kbps doesn't make sense. You might even want to try lossless...

A good bass-y song to test my headphones?

I just bought myself the "Sony Walkman - NWZ-S544" along with "Sennheiser CX 300-II" in ear-headphones. They are made for people who love bass, and I wanted to test them to see there limits. Can someone name some songs that are HEAVY on the bass... I have already tried "The Great Destroyer - by Nine Inch Nails" but want something even heavier than that. I don't care about style because this is primarily for the bass testing

The Bluetooth must support A2DP, which is what enables it to receive media audio from the phone, in addition to call audio. So ask a salesperson which ones have that.

headphones..?

jenny

ok first off...ive gone through like 6 pairs of headphones this year...and i allways thought it was the head phones.. but the headphones work perfectly in my stereo... so i was wondering if maybe for some odd reason,.. my computer could just only play thru 1 ear phone... bcuzz when i put the plug thing in all the way it plays the right ear phone and then when i take it out a lil..bit it plays the right..has this ever happened to anyone b4?

Answer
Get a stereo adapter, or maybe your sound card's jack is defective. If you are using a standard 1/8" stereo plug, it should work in the computer. Every standard stereo plug is a "ring-tip-sleeve" configuration. If you look at the headphone plug, it is divided in three sections. The tip or end of the plug is the contact to the left side of the headphones. Then there should be a band next which is the ring. That is the contact to the left side. The sleeve is the remainder of the plug. That is actually a common contact between left and right. It sounds like your adapter/headphone plug is not correct for the computer. Yes, I know exactly what you are talking about. Either you have a defective jack in the sound card or you don't have the correct adapter for the headphones. Make sure the adapter/headphones has those 3 contacts. If everything is 1/8" there is no reason why it shouldn't work.

What do you need for a home recording studio?

Jordan

I have a laptop and I found a vocal mic, but what other things are needed to make your own home recording studio work?

Answer
With the right equipment and a surprisingly small amount of money you can build a professional quality recording studio in your own home.

Here are the five basic tools that every home studio needs:

1. A recording device

For a perfectly good digital recording device, look no further than your computer. Your built-in sound card will probably work fine, but if you're serious about home recording, you should consider investing in a sound card made exclusively for that purpose, with a high-quality digital audio converter (DAC), microphone pre-amps and MIDI input/output.

To record music on your computer, you'll also need sequencing software. This is software that records either analog audio from a microphone or MIDI data from electronic instruments. Sequencing software allows you to easily edit and mix multiple tracks, add effects, export audio files to CD. The industry standard for professional audio sequencing is Pro Tools (comes with its own sound card), but there are options for every budget.

Computers are such versatile and powerful home recording devices that almost everybody chooses this option. However, if you're a firm believer that computers and music don't mix, you can buy a multi-track digital recording device that records onto a compact Flash card or even burns directly to a CD.

2. A good microphone

Don't skimp on your microphone. Even with all of the magic of digital editing and effects, you can't do much with a bad source recording. The best kind of microphone for recording solo acoustic instruments and vocals is a condenser microphone. For vocals, you'll also want a pop filter, an inexpensive piece of material that protects the mic from hard "p" and sharp "s" sounds.

To record a full rock band, you'll need to mic all of the instruments separately using smaller dynamic mics. You should be able to find good condenser mics for under $200 and dynamic mics for under $100.

3. Monitor speakers and headphones

Monitor speakers are different than normal stereo speakers. They're important in a recording studio environment because they broadcast the audio exactly as it's being recorded, without "coloring" or "sweetening" the sound [source: BBC]. This is the best way to ensure that your recording will sound exactly how it did when you were playing it.

It's common to record songs in a multi-track format, recording each track one by one (drums first, bass second, keyboards third, et cetera). The best way to do this is to use a pair of headphones to listen to the previously recorded tracks as you lay down a new one. Good headphones keep the sound in, so the only thing that's recorded is the new track.

4. A MIDI controller or synthesizer

A synthesizer is typically an electronic keyboard that can be programmed to play many different kinds of sounds. But synthesizers come in many different shapes and sizes, such as guitar synths, wind instrument synths and drum machines.

A MIDI controller is like a synthesizer, but doesn't actually produce any sounds by itself. The instrument is literally a controller, like a joystick for a computer game. A MIDI controller produces MIDI data which can be used to play other synthesizers, whether hardware- or software-based. For example, you can use a MIDI controller to play an electronic keyboard plug-in like ProTools. Or use a single MIDI controller to play a whole network of interconnected synthesizers and drum machines.

5. An audio interface

An audio interface is like an external sound card. Instead of plugging microphones and digital instruments directly into your computer, you plug them into this external box that connects to your computer with a single cord, either USB or Firewire. The interface handles the analog-to-digital conversion, taking pressure off your computer's processing power. This is especially useful for laptops, which don't have space for extra internal PCI cards and generally have slower processors.

Audio interfaces, also known as breakout boxes, come with a certain number of microphone pre-amps (anywhere from two to a dozen) and knobs to control the recording level of each microphone. Generally, each instrument and vocal needs its own microphone (drums need at least 3 separate mics), so look for an interface with enough pre-amps to cover your needs.

What do I need for a complete home recording studio?

oli

I'm about to buy a recording set online, but I've never had one, so I don't really know all the things I need. I don't want something professional and expensive though, just a little set so I can work on my music.

Answer
Here are the five basic tools that
every home studio needs:
1. A recording device
For a perfectly good digital
recording device, look no further
than your computer. Your built-in
sound card will probably work fine,
but if you're serious about home
recording, you should consider
investing in a sound card made
exclusively for that purpose, with a
high-quality digital audio
converter (DAC), microphone pre-
amps and MIDI input/output.
To record music on your computer,
you'll also need sequencing
software. This is software that
records either analog audio from a
microphone or MIDI data from
electronic instruments. Sequencing
software allows you to easily edit
and mix multiple tracks, add
effects, export audio files to CD. The
industry standard for professional
audio sequencing is Pro Tools
(comes with its own sound card),
but there are options for every
budget.
Computers are such versatile and
powerful home recording devices
that almost everybody chooses
this option. However, if you're a
firm believer that computers and
music don't mix, you can buy a
multi-track digital recording device
that records onto a compact Flash
card or even burns directly to a CD.
2. A good microphone
Don't skimp on your microphone.
Even with all of the magic of digital
editing and effects, you can't do
much with a bad source recording.
The best kind of microphone for
recording solo acoustic instruments
and vocals is a condenser
microphone. For vocals, you'll also
want a pop filter, an inexpensive
piece of material that protects the
mic from hard "p" and sharp "s"
sounds.
To record a full rock band, you'll
need to mic all of the instruments
separately using smaller dynamic
mics. You should be able to find
good condenser mics for under
$200 and dynamic mics for under
$100.
3. Monitor speakers and
headphones
Monitor speakers are different than
normal stereo speakers. They're
important in a recording studio
environment because they
broadcast the audio exactly as it's
being recorded, without "coloring"
or "sweetening" the sound [source:
BBC]. This is the best way to ensure
that your recording will sound
exactly how it did when you were
playing it.
It's common to record songs in a
multi-track format, recording each
track one by one (drums first, bass
second, keyboards third, et cetera).
The best way to do this is to use a
pair of headphones to listen to the
previously recorded tracks as you
lay down a new one. Good
headphones keep the sound in, so
the only thing that's recorded is the
new track.
4. A MIDI controller or
synthesizer
A synthesizer is typically an
electronic keyboard that can be
programmed to play many
different kinds of sounds. But
synthesizers come in many
different shapes and sizes, such as
guitar synths, wind instrument
synths and drum machines.
A MIDI controller is like a
synthesizer, but doesn't actually
produce any sounds by itself. The
instrument is literally a controller,
like a joystick for a computer
game. A MIDI controller produces
MIDI data which can be used to
play other synthesizers, whether
hardware- or software-based. For
example, you can use a MIDI
controller to play an electronic
keyboard plug-in like ProTools. Or
use a single MIDI controller to play
a whole network of interconnected
synthesizers and drum machines.
5. An audio interface
An audio interface is like an
external sound card. Instead of
plugging microphones and digital
instruments directly into your
computer, you plug them into this
external box that connects to your
computer with a single cord, either
USB or Firewire. The interface
handles the analog-to-digital
conversion, taking pressure off
your computer's processing power.
This is especially useful for laptops,
which don't have space for extra
internal PCI cards and generally
have slower processors.

People at the gym won't care, they are there to sweat. Headphones might not be practical, though. Try earbuds.

Good Headphones for Video Editing?

Ben

Using them in a class. They need to have clear crisp sound, and minimal noise leakage and good noise cancellation. And they can't be to hard on my wallet.

Answer
It depends what you preferred (closed-back / opened-air, headphones / buds etc.).

If you want decent quality for a cheap price - look into Sennheiser (models HD 201, HD202, HD203, HD205 II and beyond - depends on your budget).
Another maker to look for will be Audio Technica (ATH-M20, ATH-M30, ATH-M40SF, ATH-M35, etc.).

Best headphones under $100 for video editing?

Wildcat11

I'm looking for a new set of on-ear headphones. Something for video editing (with some audio work) on a Mac Pro. I've looked at Sennheiser and Audio Technica, but there are so many choices Does anyone have any suggestions specific to this situation?
I'd like something with the best sound quality possible in this price range. Definitely want on-ear (not in) as I've said. Sound cancelling's not a huge deal, as it's pretty quiet where I work.

Answer
Go to the Heil audio web site at

www.heilsound.com

Bob Heil was the audio guy for the Eagles, so he really knows his audio. He has a very complete line of earphones.

Headphones question??

Timotheus

So, I need new headphones. My last pair was the Skullcandy SkullCrushers (which my mom broke lol). My problem is, I loved the sound with those. They had insane bass. But, they were a pain to lug around and wear around. It got to the point where the only time I'd use them was when I was on the computer or playing guitar.

So what I'm looking for is, which headphones have sick bass but aren't a pain to wear? What isn't incredibly expensive? And what looks pimp like skullcandy? Also, I play guitar, so it'd be nice to have headphones that I can have my amp turned up, and my headphones can handle it.

Any suggestions? Thanks guys

Answer
Sennheiser makes excellent headphones if the most important thing to you is sound. They will sound a million times better than SkullCandy but will be around the same price

Check out the HD280s. They are under 100 bucks, have monster bass, super comfortable, and won't run you 300-500 like a lot of the expensive headphones.

Good neutral headphones with detailed sound (for under 100$)?

paranoid p

so i've been wanting to get an audiophile level headphone (well at least , sort of. i just want good sound quality) Up till now i've been looking at the Sony MDR V6 but i hear the Superlux 668b is also good , and the Monoprice 8323 as well for its price. I tried asking /g/ but they only really made it worse , they recommended the Koss portapros and the JVC HARX700 (and then ofc started arguing. as usual.)

What does yahoo recommend? Any audiophiles here that could help? Anything else you would recommend?
I listen to music mostly but i occasionally like gaming as well.
What i listen to: Guns N' Roses , The white stripes , The Raconteurs , The dead weather , Nirvana , Soundgarden , Scorpions , The offspring , Mastodon , Megadeth , Metallica , Testament , Baroness , Deadmau5 , Noisestorm , Noisia , Skrillex , Wolfgang Gartner , etc etc etc. Anything like what i mentioned counts.

I won't be using a dac or an amp. Thanks in advance

Answer
Looking at your music selection, the obvious choice is a Grado SR60i or Grado SR80i. They are the unassailable rock and metal champion. Not bad for electronic music too.

If you want closed headphones (isolation from outside noise but don't sound as good as open), I'd look into the Shure SRH440 or Brainwavz HM3.

Koss Portapros are also very good for their $30 price tag too, but Grados will totally destroy any of those headphones you mentioned for rock or metal music.

our basketball season is starting and i would like some new headphones for the away games when were riding the bus.doe anyone have any good ideas of headphones with bass and wont go out after like 2 weeks cause i have them full blast. that have good sound quality. thx for your answers

Answer
most of the sony headphones are good.
I got the sony active ones, they have a hook that goes around your ear and then it has in ear as well. and the hooks are removeable, and when your playing basketball you can shorten the cord to two feet and it gives you an extension.

Koss Porta Pro headphones?

JDW

I bought some of amazon but I found that I paid £30 and you can actually get them for £20! From the same company? They both seem identical apart from the fact the ones I bought say they are in-ear where as the cheaper ones are over-ear. What is this about?

Second question is do you know how strong these are and whats your general review on them out of 10?

Answer
The Koss Porta Pro headphone has been around since the early 1980s and is such a good seller with such a good reputation that they don't need to advertise them at all. They sell by word of mouth to people who want good sound and aren't into "status symbol" over priced / under performing headphones.

One of the true bargains in headphones. I had a pair for decades - eventually I needed to replace the pads. Koss sells pads for all of their headphones for $5 delivered. They sent me a total of 8 due to their small size (each headphone has 4 cushions on them).

Koss or JVC headphones?

Loveblue6

I am trying to decide to get either the koss solo headphones or the JVC ha-rx300 headphones. does anyone know anything about either headphones? i read some reviews for the JVC ones but cannot find any reviews for the koss solos.

Answer
koss are durable imo. and comfortable if their the full ear ones. quiter than jvcs on full volume.
jvcs are loud and somewhat reliable, but after extended use they pop the speakers and you go buy another pair.

Integrated 5.1 Audio Channel but 7.1 Headphones?

Prady

I'm planing on getting a computer and it says it has HD 5.1 channel audio. I have 7.1 surround sound stereo headphones, though. Does that mean even when I use my 7.1 headphones the quality won't exceed 5.1? If so, can I get another sound card with 7.1 audio output? Thanks for the help!

Answer
It depends.

5.1/7.1 is the number of channels, not a quality value.

If the headphones use discrete 3.5mm plugs, you lead the extra two channels out and get just 5.1

If the headphones have their own USB adapter, that replaces the 5.1 your computer has, so can provide 7.1 sound.

Best 5.1/7.1 surround sound headphones?

dabom

I want big ear cups and good sound and bass response. I looked into the sennheiser pc333ds but theyre uncomfortable. Will the g35s be good? suggest some true surround sound headphones with multiple drivers

Answer
Logitech G35 Surround Sound Headset has opted to position controls on the left earpiece rather than on the 3-metre long braided cord, which smartly reduces the hanging weight and allows for freer movement of the head. A scroll wheel is included for volume, a mic mute button next to it (which also triggers the red light), and three customisable buttons above those.

How to plug headphones into Xbox 360?

Bryce

Kinda confusing but... I have a Xbox 360 (original/not slim) plugged into a Asus monitor. The monitor doesn't have a headphone jack in it, and doesn't have speakers, so I was wondering how could I get any sound out of my Xbox.

Answer
You don't enter the headphones into the actual XBOX system. Look closely at your controller. We normally play with the controller strait up, but flip it just a little bit and before you get to the pack with your batteries in it, you will find a small hole where your headphones can go. If not, then you have turned it the wrong way so try it the other way lol.

Are headphones for XBox 360 just for Live use?

laney_lily

My son is driving me nuts! He has the volume up all the time on his 360! The Xbox came with a head set but I think they are just for use on Live. I want just a set of headphones for him so the rest of us don't have to listen to his game. We don't have Live because our internet is too slow. I just don't want to hear his games. Does anyone have an answer for me???

Answer
Sorry, the headset is for xbox live only.

There maybe system headphones available somewhere. You should contact Microsoft xbox support or go to your local game store.

Also, if you have a receiver you should be able to plug a standard 3.5mm headphone into the receiver. Some TVs also support headphones.

Best 100% noise canceling headphones under $200?

M5foreva

I need noise canceling headphones, but I don't want to spend more than $200. I'm thinking of buying these headphones, but I'm not sure if they're noise canceling or not...
http://www.walmart.com/ip/Fanny-Wang-1000-series-On-Ear-High-Def-Headphones-White/19887911

Answer
Hey, M5foreva

There are a wide selection of headphones available on the market currently, and for the most part, the quality of the sound and craftmanship will depend on the price that you are willing to spend. On the lower price range (less than $50), you will be able to find some pretty good headphones that will be perfect for somebody who is just looking to listen to music on their mp3 player or computer, and are not full-on audiophiles. In the medium price range ($50-150), you will get a good selection of very high quality headphones that would be perfect for nearly everyone who is not involved with music professionally. The quality of these headphones are going to be suberb, should cancel out almost all background noise, and will be of a quality craftmanship that is going to last for quite a long time. On the more expensive end of things ($150 and up), you are going to find professional quality headphones. For the normal person this is going to be complete overkill as they provide a quality of sound that is amazing, but is usually only sought after by professionals that are working on their own music (or the type of people who make sure their house is wired with the best speaker systems on the market).

Depending on the amount you are willing to spend, my top five recommendations (from cheapest to most expensive) would be:

Sennheiser HD 202 II Professional

http://headphones.respectablereviews.com/sennheiser-hd-202-ii-professional/

This model provides good insulation against background noise and has a solid bass range and response time. Perfect for somebody wanting a low-priced set of quality headphones.

Sennheiser RS120

http://headphones.respectablereviews.com/sennheiser-rs120/

These are very affordable for wireless headphones. They feature an open-ear system with a strong bass response. Because they are wireless, you don't even have to be in the same room as the device that is transmitting the sound, giving you ultimate flexibility while listening to music. Very lightweight and a high quality. I have this set for using around my apartment.

Sennheiser HD280 Professional

http://headphones.respectablereviews.com/sennheiser-hd-280-pro/

These are well into the midrange of quality headphones. This set is corded, but provides a much higher sound quality than the RS120. They provide up to 32 dB attenuation of outside noise, so you don't need to worry about much from background noise, even in relatively noisy environments.

Beats by Dr. Dre Solo HD

http://headphones.respectablereviews.com/beats-by-dr-dre-solo-hd/

These are on the high-end spectrum of headphones. They are very comfortable and can produce an amazing sound quality. If you're looking for something that is "in-style" and provides some of the best sound quality that you can find at this price range, then these are the headphones for you.

Bose Quietcomfort 15

http://headphones.respectablereviews.com/bose-quietcomfort-15/

I use this set when I'm playing live shows. They are some of the best headphones you can get at the moment, are very comfortable when wearing for many hours at a time (even in hot, sweaty clubs), block out almost all background noise and provide nearly unmatched sound quality. For somebody looking for professional quality headphones, or with a big budget for the best money can buy, then these are the headphones for you.

Overall, the most important thing for choosing the headphones, is the consider what you will be using them for and don't over estimate how much quality you will need. If you're looking for something to use on the ride to work or just while you're hanging out, listening to music, you probably don't need top of the line Bose. Good luck, M5foreva, and I hope you find the perfect set!

Best headphones under $100?

Q. I've been through countless amounts of headphones, all with mediocre sound quality, and i'm looking for a new pair that are better than the ones I've tried. My brother is obsessed with sound quality and trusts his small Sennheiser headphones, but i was wondering what would be the best (and perhaps most durable) pair i could buy for under $100. I'm not looking for anything too bulky either, I had skullcandy ones and they were just a hassle.

Answer
I would recommend the Sony MDR-7506 Professional headphones. The quality is unsurpassable for the price. I recommended them to four people, and all of them were thoroughly pleased after purchasing them. They are constructed of stainless steel and aluminum (aluminum cups, and a stainless steel headband), and are also lightweight. The sound is incredibly realistic and brilliant. When I listened to the virtual barbershop with them. I, and everyone else that listened to that felt as if the scissors were literally approaching our ears. They are good for heavy use, and you can wear them for very long periods of time without becoming uncomfortable.

Hooking up headphones to a Radio?

Q. Ive got a conversion van with passenger headphones, how do i hook these up to my stereo radio used solely for the headphones? Headphones share the ground for left and right but radio has seperate ones. the headphones were grounded to the van's frame before but this never worked, blew up radio, how should it be done? (3rd time asking this question)
im just wondering if its healthy to hook up both grounds together and them to the headphones or if it will hurt the radio...

Answer
i can only layout the fundamentals:

headphones are the same as speakers in your car. you run a left +, right +, and a shared -. you don't use the frame as - because it introduces noise from everything else that running through the car.

note that there are two types of + on the radio, one delivers power and the other delivers the music signal you don't mix the two.

you must understand the wiring scheme of your car and correctly match it up to your stereo

Headphones required to listen to radio?

Okay so my phone denies access to the Radio if I haven't got a Headphone jack in the socket, I was wondering why??

Because if I use an Auxiliary Cable from phone to PC speakers, it works?

Answer
the headphone cord becomes the antenna for the radio. The speaker cord might work, but may not be long enough or the proper termination.

Wearing headphones on a motorcycle for navigation?

Yes.

I've been contemplating going on a 530 mile trip(there and back) to Chicago on my 2003 750cc Honda Shadow.

I've always lived in a small town, far away from any cities. I've never drove any vehicle in a big city like Chicago. There's no way I can navigate my way around Chicago without GPS. However, I have a top of the line cell phone with navigation. I COULD wear headphones underneath my helmet to make my way. Is this a good idea?
The only GPS I COULD look at, is my cellphone. I'm not going to whip it out constantly. on that long of a trip, I'm going to be making lots of turns, in which pulling over to look at my phone could be very inconvenient.
Plus, do you really use your sense of sound much riding? The only thing I can hear while riding is my bike, sirens, and horns. All which are much too loud to muffle, nor would it. I would just have a voice telling me to take a turn every once in awhile. Riding awareness is all visual anyways.

Answer
They have helmet headsets, actually sort of flat speakers you install in your helmet. The problem (for me) is they have to be really loud to overcome the roar of the wind (but some helmets are quieter than others). I use foam earplugs on my bike because the roar actually gets painful for me sometimes, and speakers loud enough to hear well would be even more painful. I'm getting older and sometimes I think I'm beginning to lose my hearing. I wonder how much of that is because of years of wind noise on the bike.

Also in California, on a bike or car, you need to keep one ear clear. You can't listen to headphones or earbuds on both ears. Of course in a helmet they can't tell.

I use my cellphone as a GPS on my bike, though. I mount it on the handlebars with a RAM mount. I don't listen to it, I look at it. It's kind of small, but it's not that hard to use just by looking.

It's also a good idea to get a power supply of some kind, either a 'cigarette lighter' or a USB port, up near the handlebars, to power the phone while you're driving. On my phone, with the GPS chip enabled, I get maybe 4 or 5 hours, not enough for a long trip. I can pull it out and mount it quickly if I'm looking for an address in a city, that only takes 20 min. or so. But to use it continuously on a long trip would require a power supply.

I do 500 mile trips all the time, to go camping in the mountains or along the coast. 250-300 miles is just a nice day's ride, then next day I come back by a different route. It's one of my favorite things to do with a weekend, just me and the bike.

Wearing 1 headphone for GPS on a motorcycle?

sean l

well im moving to California and im getting my fz6 shipped out there. san diego to be exact. im from northern Virginia, i go into dc every now an then, im used to traffic. i know im going to get lost in CA if i dont come up with a plan.

would it be a good idea to put my phone (galaxy s4) in my pocket, and wear one earbud to listen to the gps? will i be able to hear it? i feel like its safe because its not always talking, and ill be able to keep my eyes on the road. ive got some nice bose headphones too, where it wont fall out. also i could put the phone in blocking mode that way no calls or texts come through and interrupt the navigation.

Answer
It's not illegal in California to have a headphone in one ear. So you could do that.

I find I can't hear my headphones on the bike with the roar of wind in my helmet. I use my cellphone as a GPS with a RAM Mount on my handlebars. I look at it rather than listen to it. I do have some trouble with vibration confusing the screen, so I have to set it as close to vertical as possible. But it works fine.
