Answer
I find on ear headphones to be the most comfortable of the three styles, but then I have yet to find a pair of ear buds, either style, that really fits well in my ears. The only real problem with on ear headphones is that they tend to be large so they are more difficult to travel with. As for ear buds, I like the in ear kind better as they don't tend to fall out when I move. I have a cheap pair of skull candy ones that fit relatively well, but they aren't really comfortable for a long period of time. As for standard ear buds, they are a really good idea, but they never stay in my ears. I don't know if I just have freakishly small ears or something, but they always fall out, every pair I've ever owned. It really depends on what you find to be the most comfortable, but that is my opinion.

Where can I find wireless headphone buds?

not tellin

ive been wanting some wireless headphone bud things so I can listen to music in class:b. I cant find any though. I just want the buds no wire on the back or anything. Please dont be too pricey. Thanks(:

Answer
Sennheiser RS 180 Digital Wireless Headphone System with Automatic Level Control and Adustable Balance Control

These headphones are excellent. After listening to music with mediocre headphones for the last few years, the RS 180 opened up a whole new level of details to my music. I'm impressed by the clarity and 'crispness' of the sound and good reproduction of lower frequencies.

How do I record what my headphones play?

Joshua Vin

I am new to this. I have tried many things but they all don't work or are too complicated.

I am going to start making Minecraft videos on youtube and I need a good video recorder.
I need one that when my headphones are plugged into the computer it records what I hear through the headphones and what I am saying

I think I have turtle beach earforce X12 headphones.

I am also on a mac, which makes things difficult.

There are 3 plugs to my headphones. A green one which goes in the headphone jack. A peach one that goes in the mic jack. And a USB like one that goes in a USB port.

I am on Mac OSX.

Also my good friend told me about one called EdzLine, I guess, but I could not find it.

Any information on any of this would be great!

Thanks!

Answer
I've used three different apps on my Mac to record the audio, any audio, coming out of my Mac. You might have to record the video first, then add the audio later. I'll also include the app I use to screencast on my Mac, which might work for Minecraft.

The first is called WireTap Studio by Ambrosia Software Inc. Their site says "If you can hear it, WireTap Studio can record it." It works! It's $69.

Next is Audio Hijack Pro by Rogue Amoeba. "Record any audio." And it does. Free for recordings lasting less than 10 minutes, $32 for a full license.

Last is Soundflower, a Free Inter-application Audio Routing Utility. It's not for the feint at heart, but it may allow you to mix the audio from your Mic and the Game at the same time and record it with the video.

Which brings me to my screencast software, Snapz Pro X, also by Ambrosia Software Inc. It captures your screenshots and video effortlessly and powerfully. It is also $69.

Lifehacker suggests you can use Quicktime Player to do limited screen recording. I've never used it, but you could try it out. They offer a few other options as well. Wikipedia also has an extensive list of Screencast software. VLC might do screencast recording, though I've never tried. Freeseer might also be an option.

Any good headphones which have no sound leakage at all?

Q. No sound leakage and have to be cheap

Answer
Well there are a number of great sounding sealed headphones that certainly will have minimal leakage of sound, but to say none that would be impossible. Some of the best sealed headphones Ive heard are the Beyer Dynamic dt770. Others getting some good reviews are the AKG272 HD, Monster Beats Pro's, Denon Ah D5000.

Some will require a good headphone amplifier though so keep that in mind

over ear headphones without noise leakage?

Trey

Hi, I'm a freshman in high school, and I need a set of over the ear headphones that leak zero noise. Already looked into the v moda crossfade lps, but they leak bad. So any reccomendations, preferably not beats, but should provide good bass. My budget is around $100-$250.

Answer
Audio Technica ATH-M50. Sennheiser HD25-1 II. Bowers & Wilkins P3.
Audio Technica is cheapest, Sennheiser is sturdiest, B&W is prettiest. All three sound great.

are "in ear" headphones good?

yeeeeeeeee

i have an iphone 3gs and im pretty happy with the stock apple headphones they came with

i saw these in ear versions on the apple store , are they good?

and i have noticed all the good headphones are " in ear" ( the expensive ones)

ive never tried in ear before.

are they confortable? and hve better sound then my stock apple ones?

Answer
Most of these in-ear headphones shocked me with their superb sound quality and put the stock apple headphones to shame.

By fitting the "in ear" headphones correctly it blocks out some of the external noises and even having the volume at half what the stock headphones where gives quality clear sounds and heavy bass.

The only good thing about the normal earbuds is that they expose the ear to the outside and allowing sound waves to propagate away from the ear freely. Making it easiler to still chat with others or still hear the traffic clearly. Due to their inability to provide isolation, they are not capable of delivering the same dynamic range.

The "in ear" headphones can be a safety issue if walking between traffic. Some people can just hear their footsteps in the bass but nothing else.

The "in ear" can also be uncomfortable for some and annoying at first getting use to. They have different sizes and it will take a week or so to become easy to use.

Circumaural headphones (sometimes called full size headphones) have circular or ellipsoid earpads that completely surround the ears. These can provide the same quality at a cheaper price but look unsightly for some in the way of style.

Sennheiser is a good brand to get.

Really good headphones for under $60?

Bigman99

I recently received some new earphones for my iPhone for Christmas and they are very uncomfortable. I guess they are considered in-ear earphones because they have the plastic attachment but they didn't successfully go in my ear. They fell out with too much bass and just plain were not comfortable. Are there any really good earphones out there for an affordable price? I really just want to put them in my ears and forget they are there.

Answer
Yea, you can get the Skullcandy Buds, they are really comfortable, have surprisingly powerful sound and they look really cool. You can get them anywhere from 9.99 on Ebay to the full like... 39.99 the most i believe at your Local F.Y.E. Sam Goody, or just google. But im not sure what headphone the one Apple gave you with the iPhone but if im not mistaken they should have a built in microphone so you can talk with it pluged in your ear...so you might wana keep the old pair around

Good headphones for under $60?

Saranya T

Does anyone know of any good headphones I can get for under $60? I want headphones, not ear clips or earbuds.

I mostly listen to alternative rock.

Oh, and I live in Sydney, Australia, so preferably a shop in Sydney. Or the internet, I guess, but I'd prefer an actual shop.

And I'd prefer closed headphones, unless anyone knows of really good open ones.
And where the hell can you FIND skullcandy headphones in Australia? I've been looking for the Hesh ones for a while, but haven't found any. And their website only ships to the US.

Answer
I like really expensive headphones, but I'm broke right now.

So for about 40 US Dollars, I bought the Sony MDR-v150... has a pretty full sound and can take the volume very well too.

Im lokking to replace my apple mirco phone/ headphone. Can anyone suggest a good brand witg the combo?

Answer
Below is a list of headphones recommended by audiophiles, the ones who know what they are talking about in a review.

Over-head headphones: http://www.head-fi.org/a/2013-head-fi-winter-gift-guide-over-ear-headphones
In-ear headphones: http://www.head-fi.org/a/2013-head-fi-winter-gift-guide-in-ear-headphones

These headphones provide excellent audio quality at great prices.

How do i charge my wireless headphones?

bvb4life

i bought these wireless headphon at a yard sale and the headphones part doesn't have a usb plugin, only a headphone jack.

Answer
Go search the internet about the headphone's brand and specs (specifications). If the headphone's brand's name was already removed or faded, which you can find at the outer part of the item, and you don't know have any clue about the item you bought, check its outer parts, like a battery slot. If it doesn't have a slot or a compartment, then you have no choice but to go to the little difficult part,

which is finding a 'jack-usb end cable' in any market or electronic stores, heres an image link:

http://100amerisure.info/2013/04/13/usb-to-headphone-jack-female-enjoy-premium-quality/

'jack-usb end cables' are partnered with a 'usb-port adaptor' (if you want to charge it to a plug socket) and can also be connected to a computer or laptop, heres an image for the adaptor:

http://www.adafruit.com/blog/2009/02/13/one-person-product-design-manufacture/

Are you sure its a wireless headphone? which is bluetooth-powered? If not, then maybe it is a kind of 'direct headphone' (headphone direct to the music player). Heres the image for the 'removable cable' of direct headphones (jack-jack end cable):

http://www.igeneration.net.nz/line/7579/3-5mm-audio-aux-cable-for-mp3-ipod-iphone-5-0m/

If all of this doesn't work, you may want to repair it to any repair/electronic shop or if you don't want to spend any more budget, try to return it to the place where you bought it and refund your money or replace the item for another yard sale item.
If not possible, ask for its charger/cable instead.

Hope you enjoy your headphone, even if its from a yard sale which is 2nd hand. 0(-.-)0

Headphones and Running?

Jade

How do i get my ear buds to stay in my ears while running so that i can listen to the music?

Answer
If you really want, you should try those rubber buds... Or if you are already using those, you can either try those clip-on's or on-ear headphones.

Headphones for running, that won't break?

Leah G

I'm a runner, and always listen to music while I run. I go through a new set of headphones about 5 times a year. They just stop working...usually starting w/ the sound only coming in one ear, and then it stops altogether. Does anyone know of a brand of type of headphone that will last longer?

Answer
Honestly, they may only last so many months due to the sweat and wetness that they get from wear when running. What you describe as how the stop working is exactly what happens to mine- very annoying. I'd look for waterproof ones as well, that may help prolong the life of them so you're not having to replace so often.

I've had success with the Nike sport wrap around your ears headphones. They lasted for me at least 4 months. I actually need a new pair!

Good luck finding a pair that works for you.

headphones under $50?

fl_state_o

what are a good pair of headphones under $50? (if you could include brand model price and where to purchase) I'm in the market for earbuds and over the ear kind needs to be ipod/iphone 3gs compatible w/ a mic would be cool too not a must have though.

Answer
The Monster Jamz Headphones have basically been designed to address the economy range of the headphone market, and if you simply want the best then you can explore their gold or copper series of In-Ear Speakers. However, for the price, these headphones do provide a really tight bass along with distortion-free mid-range and highs. The bass is such that your head does not feel that it will explode while the mids and highs complement the overall sound in a slightly mild-mannered but really clear way. The sound emancipating from these headphones provides decent depth without sounding flat or harsh. However, although you will receive multiple sized ear-tips that are quite comfortable, you will need to improvise in case the ear-tips do not fit comfortably in your ears or do not manage to seal outside sound in an efficient manner.

Best headphones around 50?

I'm looking to replace my slowly denigrating headphones, these are the pair i have currently (one side snapped off)

http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&productId=11037408#reviews

I love them, but I'm wondering if i can get something even better,
my top 3 preferred characteristics for a pair of headphones are:
-comfort
-quality
-durability

any suggestions have to be able to beat my current pair or I'll end up buying a replacement and note that usually am traveling with my headphones (walking to school etc) thank you! :3
(since i cant comment on answers) I've heard a lot about Skull candy costing a lot and being rather fragile. How true is that?

Answer
Those Sony's are notorious for ... not lasting very long.

Skullcandy are the joke of the headphone world. I've tried many pairs, only brave enough to own one pair, and they are garbage ... not only in terms of sound, but the build quality is a disgrace!

http://portal.fakeheadphones.com/index.php?topic=1023.msg3454#msg3454 - my Skullcandy review.

For around $50 the only headphones I can suggest are the following:

Grado iGrado: Still one of my all time favorite portable headphones. fast and quite deep sound (considering the size).
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Delectronics&field-keywords=akg+headphones&x=0&y=0#/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Delectronics&field-keywords=igrado&rh=n%3A172282%2Ck%3Aigrado

Sennheiser HD238: One of the best deals at the moment is on the Sennheiser HD238 headphones. Buy only from J&R or World Wide Stereo because they are authorized Sennheiser dealers and there are fake HD238's on the market. in terms of performance, they a serious step up from the iGrado's.

Denon AH-D310: I had the old AH-D301 version and they were o.k. new new AH-D310 should be one of the most comfortable headphones on the market.

http://www.amazon.com/Denon-AH-D310-Headphones-Black/dp/B003UYU166/ref=sr_1_7?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1294780034&sr=1-7

for $50 that's about all i can think of. good luck and stay away from Skullcandy!

Apple or Bose In-Ear Headphones?

soulinreha

I recently purchased an ipod nano and am thinking of buying a canal earphone. Which brand is better? Apple or Bose?

Thank you.
Please give reasons as well. Tq.

Answer
I would HIGHLY recommend SONY headphones instead of Bose!

You can buy BETTER headphones! [You can basically get whatever, but there are two sides of the story]

Bose has an awful quality and disappoints me EVERY TIME.

Trust me, I've tried it all!

I tried their $99 desktop speakers! They sounded like my brothers laptop speakers! Replaced them with $60 Altec Lansing spakers! BEST PURCHASE!

I tried the $149 Bose Tri-Port headphones. My $20 Sony headphones almost matched the same quality! The only difference is that the Bose headphones added WAY TOO MUCH bass, it got annoying (and I LOVE bass.)

To the $600 5.1 speakers (disappointment!) You got an annoying hiss from the small speakers and they were noticeable as you turned the volume. There was also too much bass in the subwoofer and there seemed to be no way to fix that, regardless of how much you turned the back knobs.

Decided to try the $1000 system which was the BIGGEST disappointment of them all! They sounded awesome. They sounded awesome, until I heard my grandmother's Infinity system! That $1000 system was gone!

In the end, got an Infinity system and love it! They sounded BETTER than the $1000 system and more for half the price!!

Bottom line: Bose is crap! Why else do you think they NEVER got THX certified (THX is the BEST recognition for speakers?) All they are obsessed about is features that nobody seems to give a crap about. So for $100 In-Ear headphones, all you're buying is the name, NOT the quality. Go for Sony or Senheiser (oh, yea. Senheiser is GREAT)!!

convincing oneself to spend $1000 on headphones?

Crackler

I don't know how to spend $1000 on headphones. I really want to try them, and people who have them mention how it is still a great deal even around that price.

I have no problem spending money on quality goods, but it seems overkill to spend blindly.

This mostly stems from IEM's which you have to drop a lot of cash to get into that world. But I'm so curious....
I already own DT 770's, yuin pk2's, and grado SR80i's, gathered over time....

I've really been interested in Inner Ear Monitors for a long time. And since I'm heavily researching a new pair of headphones, they always sound incredibly enticing.

reason: music listening is a massive hobby and i recently fractured my hands and i'm on short term disability. So plenty of time :]

Answer
You'd be better off buying a better computer. Just because something is highly priced does not make it better. A good $20 pair will do you good. Anything past $100 would be overkill.

Headphones with music on max volume?

Vi

I recently got the Sony MDR-XB400 Extra Bass headphones, and just want to know... if i listen to music on max volume and bass boost will the headphones be affected?

I'm asking because they aren't expensive. Thanks

Answer
Headphones can't handle 'max volume' from just any device...

Different equipment is rated at different levels...yes, if you are using powerful audio equipment you will damage (ruin) your headphones...

I'm more concerned about your hearing...you might be able to afford a new set of headphones...just do some research on the medical condition 'Tinnitus' before giving the volume control its next twist.

You are expected to use some 'common sense' while using headphones and use them at sensible listening levels.

Headphone slot to music converter?

Dustin

I am getting a car in a few days and it only has a slot for headphones and not a usb port. I am wondering if there is a device that you could possibly plug into the headphones slot then plug into an ipod and be able to listen to your ipod music through the radio. And if so where could i buy one?

Answer
Is it a headphone out plug or a headphone in plug? If it is a headphone in the to play your ipod through the car you don't need a usb to headphone adapter. All you need is an auxiliary cable. You can buy them online for dirt cheap. If it is a headphone out then you can get a device that you plug in to the cigarette lighter. You plug your ipod in to it and it finds a radio station that is not being used and plays your music over the unused channel. Mind you these devices are <$35 and don't always work the best.

good quality headphones?

like the title said. Im looking for a pair of headphones that have a good bass, noise cancelling, and must be foldable like the beats by dre. :D
and without leaking please

Answer
If REAL quality is an issue, please stick to REPUTABLE brands only such as B&W, Sennheiser (most affordable), Shure, Grado, Denon, AKG, Audio-Technica (NOT to be mixed with Technic which is utter rubbish as well!), Etymotic or Beyerdynamic. Things like V-Moda, Klipsch, Sony, Panasonic, JVC and Philips are ONLY "okay-ish" indeed. Please do NOT fall a victim to FASHION ACCESSORIES by buying Boombox, Ministry of Sound, Sol/Republic/Revolution, Noontec Zoro's, Benetton, a-jays, iFrogz, Marley, Fanny Wang, Razer, Karl Kani, WESC, Turtle, JH, Dr.Dre/Beats/Solo, Ludacris/Soul, Koss, Skullcandy, Lady GaGa, Skullcrushers, Monsters nor Bose, because they are ALL seriously overhyped and overpriced "fashion blingbling gimmicks" with a very poor durability and sound quality, NOTHING else (and those who try to claim they are good do NOT know ANYTHING about QUALITY anyway!), BE THEM FAKE OR NOT!

How do I talk to women who wear headphones at the gym it's pretty much a conversation killer they are completely antisocial!! grrrr

Answer
Bottom line: You don't. The gym is one of the worst places to meet women. They're just into themselves and what they're doing ... and that's about it. I mean, the clear signal is the fact that they're listening to their I-Pods. They don't want to hear *you*.

Headphone comparison for production and monitoring?

kilometers

I am wondering for the purposes of mixing, monitoring, and just generally producing, (if you are not experienced with this please do not input) which headphones I would be best off buying. My budget is $400. The more money I save the better, but quality is more important to me. So far I have come up with:

Logitech UE 9000
Sony MDR XB700
Sony MDR XB1000 -(unless the difference between the 700 and 1000 are not worth the price diff.)
V-MODA Crossfade M-100
Sennheiser Momentum

If there are quality headphones that I have not mentioned, I am open to anything. My priority is audio quality over everything, and secondly comfort (at least to the point where I can where them all day without the need to take them off.) The music being produced is hip-hop/rap heavy.

Answer
Better off getting studio monitors for recording and mixing.

Can I use Beats By Dre Headphones to mix vocals?

My KRK RP5 monitors crashed on me and won't work for some odd reason and I'm really low on money to go buy a new set so I was wondering if I can use the studio beats by dre or the new MIXR beats

Answer
It's not a great idea to mix on headphones because with monitors, you hear the content from each channel in both ears, and also you want to know how the music will sound in an open environment (though it's good to check the mix on headphones and other sound systems). But of course using headphones to mix is better than not at all I suppose, or using crappy consumer speakers. If you are just mixing for fun and not trying to market your music it's no big deal though.

Depends on the quality and make of the headphones. Some makes do supply spare parts (check with manufacturer) and some use "universal" replacements.
To be honest, unless the headphones were VERY expensive, it's probably going to be easiest and cheapest to buy a new set!

I don't know what your price range is in your currency, but there a number of great headphones it is hard to recommend just one set as everyone hears differently. But with that said I would suggest listening to sennheiser 650HD or 800's both excellent headphones. A good headphone amplifier is recommended with any good pair if headphones. This can in some cases be added later depending on what you will using to drive them with.

Hifiman, and Stax are also excellent, these do however require a good headphone amplifier.

Has anyone taken Air India?

AngryFalaf

I recently came back from a trip to london/paris in May. We had taken Air India there and coming home. Has anyone else been as disgusted as i was with the conditions of the plane?

Going there , we had "used" pillows with hairs on them and crumpled blankets. On the way home i believe we had empty juice containers in the pockets and headphones that were sticky. The windows were so dirty and had a "film" of something on them, i couldnt even look out the window to enjoy the view from above.

Is this normal for an airline to leave the cabin so messy before a flight?? Has anyone else encountered the same things?

Answer
I was born in Canada, but both my parents are from India, and so I often travel to India to see my relatives. The first time I flew to India, I travelled with Air India, and it was the worst experience ever. Exactly as you describe. The bathrooms were filthy, the blankets had vomit stains, and the smell was just horrible. Since then, I have learned my lesson and decided to change my loyalties to other airlines which offer much better quality and service.

This is definitely not normal for most airlines, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was normal for Air India flights.

What are some good headphones?

Andre

My price range is anything up to 500 dollars, and the minimum I want to spend is 300.
Does anyone know GOOD headphones which have good quality and DO NOT look bad. I was thinking about buying beats studio's since I already own the solo's hd but I was hoping to receive some positive alternatives.
Thank you for your help.

Answer
Throughout my life, I have purchased countless amounts of headphones, from Klipsch to Bose to Monster, and to this day, my Beats Studios are still the best headphones I have ever owned. I have had them for around 2 years now, and they still sound absolutely incredible. I am aware that you already have solos, but the Studio's sound and bass are 100x better than the solos. So if I were you, I would sell your solos and go with the studios. You definitely won't be disappointed.

What are the best wireless headphones under $100?

khadija888

I am looking for the best headphones under $100. I am also looking for tips on what I should be looking for in the headphones. I do not want something over $100 or too sophisticated, just something that will work fine and wont hiss or there wont be interference in the audio. Tips welcomed thanks.
I want to use the in my room to listen to the tv without bothering my sister or vice versa. I share a room and sometimes it is bothersome when there are two tvs on.

Answer
Neither of the above posters actually answered your question, so I will attempt to. First things first...what do you intend to use them for? There are wireless headphones of all kinds, you can read an overview as well as some of my recommendations here:

If you reply with how you intend to use them, I can give you more specific recommendations. If not, GL in your headphone search!

I basically listen to Korn, Metallica, Three Days Grace, Papa Roach, etc and I need some headphones that are meant for metal and rock and have good noise cancelling. I have done my research but I still need clarification and I am willing to spend $200 MAX. I've looked at Sennheiser, Monster, and Soul by Ludacris and I have heard that Soul is basically for pop and rap.... I'm not too sure about Monster and Sennheiser.

Answer
If REAL quality is an issue, please go for REPUTABLE brands only such as B&W, Sennheiser (most affordable), Shure, Grado, Denon, AKG, Audio-Technica (NOT to be mixed with Technic which is utter rubbish as well!), Etymotic or Beyerdynamic.

Also, please do NOT go for the overly thumping bass that only distorts everything else, focus on GOOD sound quality and durability IN GENERAL.

What are some pairs of headphones that are good quality but inexpwnsive?

I would like some headphones that are noise cancelling, good quality, comfortable, but inexpensive. Links are appreciated.

What are the best headphones to use for Heavy Metal music on a low budget?

Philip

I'm looking for a pair of on ear or over ear headphones to use for my Ipod and/or PC and I listen to allot of heavy metal music of all different subgenres. While the in-ear earphones I have are good for travel, I prefer to use on-ear or over-ear headphones when at home for comparability and sound quality. I need to have a pair that is quite durable, as while my current JVC Xtreme Xplosive earphones are very good, they rarely last more than 4-5 months (skullcandy are even worse, breaking after only a month). I am looking for something around the £15-£30 price range, but I could go a little higher if it's good enough quality. What would be the best headphones of this type for that price range?

Answer
Try Koss Porta Pro. JVC HAS600's are also well rated. For real cheap, you could get JVC HAS160's.

Does listening to heavy metal have any effect on hearing?

Q. Just wondering if there is any scientific research that provides any evidence on hearing loss from listening to heavy metal. I know if you blast the music you are obviously more prone to hearing loss but will listening to death metal at the same volume as lets say pop music affect your hearing anymore than the pop music would?
Sorry for posting this in the biology section. I thought I clicked on a different section.

Answer
Yes, listening to heavy metal music will affect your hearing. Because, lets face it, who EVER listens to heavy metal quietly?? You need to blast that shit to make it any good! ;)

Nah, but seriously, if you listen to it at a reasonable level, it won't damage your hearing. If you're going to concerts EVERY WEEKEND, then you might have a problem. And if you listen to it by blasting it directly into your ears with headphones (especially if those headphones have an awesome bass), you'll regret it in a couple years time when you start to notice your hearing isn't as good as it should be.

Can I connect a headphone amp to a turntable?

Anna

Does anyone know of a headphone amp that will work with a turntable? Specifically an audiotechnica turntable with a built in phono amp?

I got one from Amazon, a Behringer MICROAMP HA400, but not one set of headphones we had were big enough to fit in the jack thing, and there was no way to connect it to the turntable anyway.
I'm planning on returning the headphone amp, what I need to know is there anyway of using headphones with this turntable without getting a completely new turntable.

Answer
What you have will work fine with the turntable's built-in phono preamp switched on. You're just going to need some adapters. You'll need a stereo 1/8" jack to stereo 1/4" plug adapter for your headphones and you'll need a dual RCA jack to stereo 1/4" plug cable to plug in your turntable.

For the headphones...

For the turntable...

Keep 'em spinnin'!

Is a 30W bass amp sufficient for connecting to my PC?

Kevin

The only bass amp in my possession is a 30W amp, and I'm looking to connect it to a jack on my computer with a 1/4" to 1/8" adapter cable run from the amp's output jack. I have the option of borrowing a 150W amp, but it will be a pretty big hassle. Will the 30W be sufficient? How does the power of the amp affect the sound quality?

Answer
Whatever you do, don't, under any account, connect the speaker out/extension cabinet jack to your P.C. - or you could really damage your soundcard.

The power of the amp has zero effect on sound quality, it's just that low wattage amps are only really loud enough for bedroom practice. Because of this, almost no-one needs professional quality at this level, and amp companies make their low-wattage amps as cheap as possible. So most low wattage amps aren't very good for recording.

But your 30w amp might still be an old Watkins or Fender valve amp, for all I know, and might be better in sound quality than many 150w amps.

The reason that bassists prefer high-wattage amps is that it takes a significant amount of power to amplify bass frequencies at a gig. So a high wattage amp will sound better at a gig (where it has to compete with a drumkit and guitar amp), but not necessarily on its own, or in recording where the levels can be altered by an engineer to make a whisper louder than a drumkit.

In any case, if you are taking the direct-out (or pre-amp out, or line-out, or headphone-out, or effects-loop out) from your amp, you are only using the pre-amp section (and therefore the power-amp, whether 30 or 150 watts isn't used). For this reason, the wattage will make absolutely no difference, but the quality of the pre-amp will.

This is perfectly normal for recording, and has the advantages of avoiding the use of a microphone (which acts as a sort of filter) and ensuring that there is no background noise.

Even if you used a microphone on the speaker, the power-amp wattage would be irrelevant - just set the level on the channel when you record. But in this instance, you'd have to worry about the quality of the power-amp and the speaker, as well as the microphone and background noise!

If you decide not to use a microphone, be sure to add a speaker simulator effect to the sound on the record.

If your amp is a valve amp, and you are using this method, make sure that you keep the speaker (or a resistor of the same value) plugged in - otherwise you will get a lot of smoke and a cooked power-amp.

If you don't know whether your amp uses valves or not, then the chances are that it doesn't - but look for the little glass tubes at the back, and check the manufacturer's description online.

I currently have a 8 channel mixer, a laptop with 4gb of memory, a microphone and studio headphones. What other tools and programs will I need? i also currently have the trial version of the DAW Reaper, but it seems more for bands and not Hip Hop, and there is a delay in mic and I am not quite sure about the errors it has, as I insert an instrumental on one track and try to rap over it and it says the recording directory doesn't exist. Any easy to use Hip Hop DAWs that I can just insert media file of an instrumental to rap over? I don't desire to make my own beats. All answers appreciated. :)

Answer
It depends on if you are using Mac or PC.

Given your level of knowledge, I would say go for Acid Pro or Frooty Loops for PC and Garage Band for Mac. Acid pro is ridiculously easy to learn and super-simple to create beats. Garage band is a bit more involved, but if you're a Mac user, it shouldn't come to hard.

Any DAW program should let you stick an instrumental in it and rap over it. As far as the mic delay, you need to adjust the latency in either your recording program or through your mic sound settings. The recording directory doesn't exist because you didn't select a destination for where recorded sound will go. This setting should be found in Reapers preferences.

I've used many different programs, but the 3 I mentioned are most basic and I think might be best for you at this time. Personally, I've traded it all in and now use 4 things. Macbook Pro, Maschine MKII, Casio Privia px-130 and a nice acoustic guitar. Here's my latest work: http://amzn.com/B00AN6N52Q

Can someone advise me about buying headphones?

Elemenop

I've only ever bought the cheap $2 dollar ear buds that break after a month. I don't want to spend $40 dollars on headphones, but is the difference in sound quality really dramatic for those super-expensive ones? Are there any middle-priced headphones that have good sound quality?

Answer
Yes, in general you get what you pay for. More expensive headphones will sound better and will last longer. $40 or $50 is probably the least you can expect to spend for decent headphones. $100 to $200 will get you good headphones. $300 will get you great headphones. $1800 will get you the absolute best... You need to figure out how far you need to go. My wife found that about $75 is the right price point for her - she thinks the ones she bought are good enough and anything more expensive wouldn't be worth it. For me, $300 is the point I'm at right now, but I'd like to go higher when I get some extra cash.

If you want specific headphones to look at, you should check out the headphone addicts' site, http://www.head-fi.org . The people there have owned and reviewed just about every headphone available....
