What should I do to get best sound from my video game consoles?

Hi all, I have a hometheater setup process that I need some help with to connect everything together for best sound quality. I have a Xbox 360, PS3, PS4 and a cable box that I want to connect. My receiver is a Sony 5.2 receiver STR-DH540 with two optical in and I have 5 speakers connected to it for surround.

To get the best sound quality as possible, should I connect all of my devices with HDMI to my receiver then a HDMI from receiver to the TV? Or should I do the opposite and connect everything first to the TV and then run a optical cable from my TV to my receiver?

My TV is pretty new (Sony Bravia W905 topmodel from 2013), but if I do the latter will the sound quality get any worse? I have just two optical ports on my receiver and I need to connect 4 devices, so that's why I'm unsure on how to do all this or if I need to connect any optical cables at all meaning if HDMI sound signals is more than enough for getting surround sound.

- You will lose audio quality if you use a s/pdif optical cable (for hd movies) and if you use the tv (not connecting devices directly to receiver) you may also lose even more audio quality because the tv has to have the decoders for surround sound and if the tv does not then you will only get uncompressed PCM stereo.

- First hdmi cable to hdmi output on computer or Blu-ray player or DVD player or game console to hdmi input on receiver for HD audio, then second hdmi cable to hdmi output on receiver to hdmi input on tv for HD video.
- Receiver menu -> manual setup -> hdmi setup -> hdmi audio setup -> send audio to amp (not passthrough to tv). (hdmi video passthroughs to tv untouched). Compatible passive speakers hook up to the receiver (amplifier) with red and black speaker wire. (You can find good cheap cables at monoprice or amazon).

= (Audio cables: DisplayPort, HDMI, S/PDIF Optical, or S/PDIF Coxial carry digital audio). (Red/White or Headphone jack only carry stereo/2.0 analog audio).
- DisplayPort to Displayport cable (v1.0 to v1.2) or HDMI to HDMI cable (v1.3 to v1.4) cable: Up to 7.1/24bit/96khz or 5.1/24bit/192khz with formats such as (uncompressed PCM) or (loseless DTS-HD-MA or Dolby TrueHD) or (lossy DTS-HD-HR or Dolby Digital Plus). Alright, so Christmas's coming up and my mom asked me if I would want anything for it, and I'm torn between a new tablet or a new pair of headphone, the new tablet would be a Nexus 7(2013) and the new pair of headphone would either be the Sony Mdr-1R or the Sennheiser Momentum, I already have a really good speaker in my room but I still want a new pair of headphone but the new tablet would be great since my old tablet broke, I'll problaly use the tablet as an e-book reader and browsing the web, so what do you guys think I should get?

Get tablet in my opinion because i'm not really interested in the world of headphones.. i use £10 earphones that work just fine. On tablets you can do so much more and it'd be a good value for money.. especially with nexus.

Basically the best overall well rounded headphone for all purposes. I know these headphone I'm going to list are very different for different purposes but I assume there all superb sound quality. What I would be using it for would be to listen to music on my iphone 5 and outside noise wouldn't be that much of a problem. Just maybe a radio a couple people talking when listening. Other times would be using it on my computer at night to do work such as personal video editing, youtube videos. I'm also looking for good build quality that won't break when being tossed around a bit and of coarse I'd be careful with them. My budget $450 and heres the list

The only way to know which would sound best to you would be for you to listen to them all. If you're spending this much on a pair of headphones you really should try to find somewhere that'll let you try before you buy. What headphone amp are you thinking of getting?

Question about a headphone amp for an acoustic electric guitar.?

My husband has an acoustic electric guitar. I bought him a headphone amp for his guitar (small amp you can plug in and play). I read the packaging wrong. It's for an electric guitar to make it sound acoustic, not the other way around. Does anyone know if this will still work for his guitar? If so, will it work well enough to make a difference?

What exactly are you trying to accomplish? It makes no sense to buy a headphone amp for an acoustic electric because it makes sound acoustically. Headphone amps are used with solid body electric guitars to enable someone to practice without bothering anyone around them. But it's not going to accomplish anything with an acoustic electric guitar. It's a complete waste of money and pointless. Plugging in the headphone amp isn't going to stop the acoustic guitar from making noise.

How to power lightbulb with battery and switch?

I have this project I'm planning to do with steampunkimg headphones and I was just at radioshack and they had some pretty useful stuff. I found some mini bulbs, a battery holder thing where you insert the battery, and a switch. I was wondering how to turn on the bulb with the switch and make the bulb work with a battery. Is it just simple connect the wires? I'm planning on putting it within the headphone casing thing. :p thanks. And yea I have no engineering skills so I'm just guessing xD

First make sure what voltage you need for the lights. If the battery is of the proper voltage, connect a wire from the positive terminal of the battery holder to one side of the switch. Connect a wire from the other side of the switch to one terminal of the light base. Connect a third wire from the other terminal of the light base, back to the negative terminal of the battery. Close the switch and you will have a complete circuit path from the battery, through the light, and back to the other side of the battery.

Listen to all the of details in the Avicii and such music that you enjoy. Use headphones and just try to absorb all the details, effects, sounds, ect... Then get yourself a music creation program. I personally create similar music using FL Studio. You can try out the demo:

Is it socially acceptable to wear over-ear headphones while working out?

I usually wear in-ear Skullcandy ones, but one of the speakers blew after a month. I want to invest in some nice over-ear headphones and not have to buy in-ear ones to wear to the gym as well. If it's socially acceptable to wear over-ear headphones to the gym, I'd just buy those.

Also if you want to add suggestions as to which over-ear headphones I should buy that would be great. Anything besides Skullcandy... I'll never buy from them again.

I listen to all types of music btw for those who are gonna give suggestions as to which over-ear headphones I should buy.

Can i hook up my headphone guitar amp straight into my computer?

though the mic input? I have one of those Tascam Guitar Trainers...unfortunately the cd player doesn't work. I'm think of buying a "8 cable to hook the Tascam into the mic input.
I also download Adacity to replace the looping capabilities of the Tascam.

You want to use the built in effects?

There are lots of free, or nearly free programs that could do this just as well. Try Kristal Audio Engine for recording, and try the links below for effects.

In any case, yes. There's no reason that you couldn't plug in to your mic input, but be sure to keep the respective volumes (input of soundcard, output of Tascam) low when you first connect. Then bring up the input volume, followed by the Tascam's output until the loudest sounds fall just short of clipping (the red part at the top of the volume meter on your soundcard's input).

If your Tascam has a line out, connect that to your soundcards line in, and use the same process to find the clipping point.

Beware that you will face latency issues when recording unless you have a good soundcard. This means that there will be a light delay between what you play and what you hear.

If you want to reduce the delay somewhat without buying a new soundcard, try asio4all. That said, I really do recommend a good soundcard

Piano and guitar are both relatively easy instruments to learn, but for entirely different reasons. I wouldn't consider either easier than the other, but you can play more fully realized songs sooner on the guitar than you can on the piano.

You can't plug headphones directly into a guitar. You need an amplifier.

Get the Blackberry Bold 9700!!
I have the original Bold and I absolutely love it. The 9700 takes all of the best parts of the 9000, the curve 8900 and the curve 8530. Small form factor, great screen, the best Blackberry keyboard and the great new trackpad. If youre a business user the blackberry is great for you. It has the enterprise email and everything else a business user needs. If you're just a consumer its great too. It has a decent browser (Not the best out there, but more than passable) It has a media player with memory card capacity up to 16 gigs. You can take some really great pictures take videos. Its perfect for both business or regular consumers. Also the blackberry has BBM and the aim on it works perfectly. You'll always be connected with a BB.

The Pure uses windows mobile, which is an absolute pain, instead of using a capacitive touchscreen like the iphone and all other good touchscreen phones on the market it uses a resistive touchscreen (Which is inferior) The Pure lacks a regular headphone jack, so if you want to use your phone for music, youre going to have to carry the headphones that come with the phone with you at all times, and if they break youre going to have to go out and look for those specific headphones. You cant just use any headphones you might have already, or if you are into very high quality audio, you wont be able to use your fancy headphones. The windows marketplace is also very slow to load and isnt as complete as the Blackberry appworld. The internet borwser is also said to fall wayy behind the competition. The good things about the pure are the 5 megapixel camera, the small form factor and all of the wireless capabilities.
I believe that the HTC pure is light years behind the Blackberry 9700 and that if you get the Bold 2 you will never ever regret it. Ultimately its your choice, you should really do your research. I just think Blackberry is one of the best companies out there.

i have at&t and i am getting a new phone in 5 days! theese are the 4 phones i have narrowed it down to:
-palm pre plus
-HTC tilt2
-sharp FX
-blackberry bold 9700

i want a phone that i can sync music on (no ipod,) , something with a headphone jack because i know alot of at&t phones come with headphones that fit in the same slot as the charger? (which isnt a problem if the headphones are included i guess, just preference.) a nice layout, and i prefer a more horizontal keyboard? it doesnt matter to me if its touch or actual buttons, but i hate the keyboards that are really smooshed together, i like the long across ones.. if that makes sense.
loooonnnggg battery life please, takes good pictures, i like easy messaging and easy internet use. i HATE using internet on a small screen!!!! i need something as close to using an actual computer is what im saying. pleeeease help! morethan anything i hate being dissapointed after getting something new! thank you very much, any advice is good advice!

tilt2 has LOTS of glitches and isnt that great. if u want something witha headphone jack and takes good pics, keyboard and has tons of features get a LG Quantum. it will have the best internet of any of the phones above. if ur stuck on those phones only get the 9700. pretty nice phone.

If you want to blow 1k on earphones, all I can suggest are the top brands like Sennheiser, AKG and there are also the Monster beats/turbines.

There is also Shure, but they aren't crazy on bass, but mroe on performance.

I'd suggest IEM's (In ear monitors) which sound MUCH better than cans. Sennhieser make the IE8, which even had a bass adjustment screw on the bottom. All I know about them is that they deliver a brain-pound whenever you crank the tunes if it's a bass heavy song, and their rrp is around $850.

In ear earphones are much better than headphones, as they can give you over 38dB of noise isolation (my Shure SE-215's do and with the foam tips someone can yell at me and I will barely hear them) and will pound your brains out.

The IE8, amongst other high quality earbuds is that there is no leakake in sound, and the bass will be delivered pretty damn well lol. I had an old pair of Sony IEM's which were about $80 and they pounded like crazy.

Make sur eyou read reviews on sites like Cnet, as you will get more info than any manufacturer site will give you.

How can I remove musty smell from my headphones earpads?

I workout with my beats studio sometimes( i wont do that ever again) and they smell bad. I tried covering up the smell with cologne but its still there. I tried rinsing the removable earpads on hot water with soap, no success. Is there anyway i could remove odors from the earpads? They are leather/vynil.

If they are vinyl, use bleach. If they are leather, use leather cleaner as bleach will eat leather.

How do I make it so that a song sounds correctly on my iPod when I only use one headphone?

On some songs, I need to use both headphones for the song to sound right (for example, the vocals will only come through one headphone and the acoustics will come through the other one). I'd like to know if i can make it so the sound is evenly distributed so i can only use one headphone. This way i can still talk to my friends and hear what is going on around me.

i am trying to make my iPod play the same thing in both headphones. Most songs play different sounds and or instruments. My iPod no longer plays the left headphone and i have tried other headphones and still nothing. It is the iPod itself. The headphones port.

Well, the settings in the "Settings" app on your iPod has the option of changing the sound it produces. I think i have mine on EB, Classic which is like the first one on my list. None of my songs play different things with the different headphones, so maybe thats your problem.
