how do i cope with my emetophobia once i catch the stomach flu?

Mella

the stomach flu is going around my house. it is only a matter of days maybe even hours before i come down with it myself. i have terrible emetophobia (fear of vomiting). it's a terrible fear to have. how can i cope with it? does anybody have any techniques?

Answer
OH I HEAR YOU!! Have had the same condition since I was about 4 I think and Im 37 now and its still full on ... when someone in my house is going to be sick (the dogs included) I run the opposite direction and run outside so I cant hear it, see it or smell it or I wear headphones plugged into my ipod on highest volume so I cant hear it (this is what I do when Im in hospital too as Im affraid someone could vomit at any time and they generally have to give me valium too). I like TV shows like House but I have to keep my finger on the mute button and if anyone looks like they are going to be sick the mute button is hit and I look away and if Im alone Ill wait about a minute and then look back and unmute or if someone is with me they will tell me when its safe to look again.. my ex husband used to run out the front and across the road to the park if he had to be sick because of my fear of vomit ... unfortunately we are divorced now so when my daughter gets sick I have to deal with it as its only the 2 of us in the house now ... she is 8 and understands my fear so if she is going to be sick she tells me so I can quickly leave the room - funny enough though I can empty the bucket for her afterwards but thats it.

If I think Im going to be sick (vomit) I will go to the toilet just in case, but I will then sit there and swollow quickly all the excess saliva that you get in your mouth before you throw up - sometimes that makes the vomit not happen - not always but sometimes, I also refuse to eat anything as I dont like to vomit food the only thing I will allow myself is some cordial as its easier to bring up. I also have told my Drs about this fear and they prescribed me with Zofran wafers - its REALLY expensive (about $100 for 10 wafers) but I dont care how much it is if it means I wont throw up - Zofran is an anti-emetic that they give to Cancer patients on Chemo and honestly it makes nausea go away within seconds its great!

I have 1 child and I was one of the extremely unlucky people who got hyperemesis all the way through my pregnancy which meant I was throwing up anywhere up to 50 times per day - every 20 minutes basically all the way through my pregnancy - I refused to eat and most of what I had (cordial or ice blocks) came back anyway - I lost 35kgs which is about 70 pounds while I was pregnant - in this case I got very used to throwing up at that time but still couldnt stand being around anyone else who threw up ... I will never have another child again because Im so affraid of being that sick again ... and if Im meant to go to someones house and their kid is sick I wont go ... If Im at a party where there is drinking going on I leave as soon as people start to seem like they are getting drunk just in case someone throws up (I dont drink alcohol)

How do you start professionally recording music?

AussiePrid

What tools are best for recording music, rock music, with
x3 Guitar (1 Bass, 2 Treble)
Keyboard
Vocals
Drums

Answer
First decide exactly what you want to do. Let's say you want to produce songs with drums, keyboard, 3 vocals, bass, 2 guitars. You would need a 16 track digital audio workstation (DAW), either a computer-based system if you already have a good enough computer, or a stand-alone DAW, like the ones I linked. Why 16? Because you'll want at least two tracks for drums (maybe 4 or 6), two for stereo keys. Do not get exactly how many tracks you think you want. You will grow out of them, I promise. DAWs typically have CD burners, so you can take your project all the way to CD. Send that in along with your artwork to a duplicating house like dvd-cdinc.com or Discmakers, and you're ready to sell your music.

Very important: Buy a large-diaphragm condenser microphone. Any decent salesperson will know what this is. They are more expensive than dynamic mic's, but this is a very important investment. Small diaphragm is second choice, followed by dynamic. A large-diaphragm mic is what you would use for vocals and acoustic guitars. You can use less-expensive mic's on other instruments.

If you want to record real drums, you'll want to consider mic'ing most of the drums separately. Shure SM57 and SM58 are $100. These have been industry standards for decades, and they take a pounding. They are good for drums, guitar amps, and other instruments. You can buy them in a package with a special bass drum mic (link below). Add to that a pair of small-diaphragm mic's (link) for "overheads" - for cymbals and overall ambience, and you have a great drum mic kit. For a smaller budget you can just get the overhead pair and a bass drum mic.

You'll need to monitor your music (listen while recording and mixing) so you'll need a decent power amp and speakers (monitors) or powered speakers. Good monitors are an important investment, too, because they are your window to the ears of your audience. They need to be accurate, because your music will be heard through ear pods, headphones, computer speakers, in cars, and good stereo speakers. Your best shot at sounding your best in all those formats is to buy decent monitors. You can get budget ones for around $300, but they only really start to get good at $600. Lots of people use headphones to monitor. That's OK if it's all you can afford, but your ears tire out after long sessions. The better the monitors, the longer you can listen without fatigue. You will need a set of headphones for when you're recording acoustic instruments; you can't have speakers on while recording with microphones in the same room.

One very important but overlooked aspect of studio recording is acoustical treatment. It can get very pricey, and there are a lot of expensive and useless products. I've included a link to some excellent advice for room treatment. I recommend Roxul brand rigid fiberglas, called rockboard, insulation board, etc. The article will tell you how to use it.

Once you have a good idea of what you want to accomplish, find a knowledgeable salesperson who will help you fill in the blanks. The type of set-up I've illustrated here is fairly expensive, so have a budget in mind when you talk to them. Try sweetwater.com.

There's nothing wrong with getting an 8-track DAW, a $100 microphone and a set of headphones. Learn the basics. This will prepare you for better-informed decisions when you're ready for the serious gear.

It's a real adventure. Have fun.

im looking to buy some new dj headphones. i need pro stuff. price is not an issue. and ill be using them for mixing music in clubs to listening to my ipod. what are the factors? what should i be looking for?

Answer
I have mixed and DJ's for years. I use cheap $20 Sony headphones I buy at wal-mart.

Why? They break and I don't care.

Mixing isn't about fidelity when you are DJing it's about timing.

If your looking for iPod headphones buy a nice pair od Shure personal ear monitors, or a pair of Bose

IPod and Djing are 2 completely different applications. Buy a nice pair for you iPod and a pair of throw aways for djing.

How do I play music out of my computer speakers and play a second track through my headphones?

What are the best wireless headphones under $100?

I am looking for the best headphones under $100. I am also looking for tips on what I should be looking for in the headphones. I do not want something over $100 or too sophisticated, just something that will work fine and wont hiss or there wont be interference in the audio. Tips welcomed thanks.
I want to use the in my room to listen to the tv without bothering my sister or vice versa. I share a room and sometimes it is bothersome when there are two tvs on.

Answer
Neither of the above posters actually answered your question, so I will attempt to. First things first...what do you intend to use them for? There are wireless headphones of all kinds, you can read an overview as well as some of my recommendations here:

If you reply with how you intend to use them, I can give you more specific recommendations. If not, GL in your headphone search!

Brandin We

I have windows vista, I have my computer hooked up to the tv and it was working fine. I came home and spouse said sound was off but didn't know how. I have checked everything from cords to device manager and found no problem. Does anyone have any ideas on what else I could check?

Answer
1. Check the volumn on your TV make sure it's loud enough.
2. Make sure the TV isn't muted.
3. Make sure your computer isn't muted.
4. Make sure the audio on your computer is turned up (near max)
5. Disconnect and reconnect the audio cable at both ends.
6. Make sure the audio cable is connected to the green audio out (speaker) port on your computer. OR try a headphones output port (sometimes on the front).
7. Make sure the audio cable is connected to the correct ports on the TV.

If you are using HDMI:
8. You can ignore what I said about audio output cord.
9. You should start by rebooting your computer and trying again.
10. Disconnect and reconnect the HDMI cable at both ends.

11. Re-install your audio drivers
12. If you used HDMI, re-install your video card drivers

Follow that one by one and it should get fixed. Otherwise it could be a hardware issue.

What causes high-pitched feedback in speakers?

Pandora93

I've had these computer speakers less than a month and the right one isn't working the way it's supposed to.
I can't figure out what it is, whether it's the cords or the speaker itself. All I know is when I connect the earphones to my computer-without going through the speakers first-there's sound in both headphones.
The speakers are Companion II Bose computer speakers, and I'm in no mood to have to call technical support-if I don't have to.

Answer
High pitch sound is the result of static discharge which is in turn the fault of the wiring. Try making sure you have completely set up your system correctly through your audio manager (realtek HD audio manager etc) Unplug and replug the whole system and it should work correctly

How much should I expect the price of bose headphones to go down on Black Friday at best buy?

Daahs

I don't know how black friday sales work, I just know I can save a lot of money. About how much would the bose ae2 headphones cost on black friday if they normally retail for around 150? Im planning on stopping at bestbuy first

Answer
You really should research some more before making decisions about purchases. Bose headphones, while having good sound quality, have horrible value for that quality. Bose has become one of those really well known audio companies, so now they are starting to overcharge for their products, in a similar, yet not as extremely, as Beats by Dre. Honestly. the only Bose headphones I would recommend are Bose QC15's and only because of their active noise cancelling, and not their sound quality or value.

***I recommend you go on sites like head-fi.org and research or ask for recommendations from audiophiles and audio experts before you go and purchase headphones.***

Even if they do go on sale, other headphones with better sound and better values will also be on sale on Black Friday.

What are a good styleish pair of over ear head phones like studio beats?

Matthew

i love my music and im going to but a good pair of headphones im not to worried about price but around 300

Answer
Studio beats sound like complete and utter garbage compared to my headphones. Even my headphones at 50 bucks sound much better. It is sad that too many non-audiophiles fall into this trap of buying celebrity endorsed garbage. The celebrity makes it for pennies and sells it back to you with inflation. Yet, you go and buy it because of the clever advertising. They make you believe it is the best when it really is not even close.

http://www.amazon.com/Shure-SRH940-Professional-Reference-Headphones/dp/B004MTE7EK

The Shure SRH940 over ear reference headphones. They aren't amazing...compared to my best headphones. But they are pretty much borderline reference grade headphones. They are probably one of the best in this price range. Reference grade means the sound is true to the original recording.

My [dumbass] friend keeps arguing with me that Apple, specifically Ipod, produces a better musical quality than Microsoft's products whether it's a psp or zune or whatever.

Is there really a difference in sound quality in these portable music gadgets? Is Apple really better than Microsoft in terms of music quality? Can we really tell?

Answer
There are too many factors that could effect sound quality to tell which has the better sound quality. For example there is the headphones you use, the format its saved in etc. Most people probably cant tell the difference even if you used the same headphones. Also the compression of the file will effect the quality. itunes music is always set the same while mp3s on psp or zune can vary. A high quality mp3 will be better than an itunes song so the non apple product would sound better.

In tests by experts it has been found that the ipod ISN'T the best mp3 player for sound quality although most people buy the expensive ipods/itunes because they look cool and are easy to use.

What is the best bluetooth headset for listening to music on yr cell phone?

klban

I have a samsung u520 (alltel). I am more interested in listening to music than phone calls.

Answer
Plantronics is the highest-rated brand of Bluetooth headsets hands-down, no matter which independent testing agency you ask (JD Power, Consumer Reports, Telephia, CNET)

Plantronics' music headset is the Pulsar 590 (or 590a). It is the one I use and usually retails for $149.99, but you can almost always talk the salesman down to around $125 or $130. It's got an amazing guarantee. Here are some of the features:

* Stereo!!! (many only play in mono)
* Doubles as headset for voice (Jabra doesn't do this)
* Comes with carrying case, USB charging cable, desktop charging stand, and extra voice tube.
* Has external control functions (play/pause, skip, stop, etc) for your music so you can leave your phone in your pocket
*Comes with 3.5mm Bluetooth adapter for your PC, Home Stereo, TV, DVD player, etc... so that you can use the headphones for more than just your phone (these usually cost around $40 bought separately, plus they're rarely high quality or high range, and this one comes automatically paired to the headset)
*Most importantly, the speakers are LOUD (I have to turn mine down to less than half volume to listen comfortably) but can be turned down very low to where they're almost not audible if necessary
*It is the most comfortable music headset I have ever used, bluetooth or otherwise

What are the best headphones out right now?

Tony T.

How come some headphones I saw on websites cost over $200? Is the quality better than iPod headphones or worst? Sum people wrote to buy the ones that cost less than $30. Those are probably horrible.

Answer
There are an overwhelming number of headphones from a variety of makers at every price point. However, quality varies. You should also consider where you'll be using your headphones (ie, at home or on-the-go). Fortunately, there are two amazing options that won't break the bank.

For home use, the Grado SR60 ($69 in USA) offer the greatest value. The sound is so crystal clear and detailed that it feels like you're immersed among the instruments! It sounds significantly better than most $200+ headphones (and it obliterates any overrated, overpriced Bose crap).

For portable use, the Koss Portapros (<$50) are legendary. They've been a bestseller since the 80s and sound almost as good as the SR60. Koss's lifetime warranty is another reason to buy these.

I own both these headphones, use them everyday with my iPod and laptop, and find them extremely comfortable to wear. If I had to choose only one, it would probably be the Portapros, simply for their portability. There are many reviews written on these two models, if you'd like another opinion. Ask any audiophile and they'll attest to their greatness in sound and value. Just remember that more money does not always equal better sound quality.

I had the sony extra bass headphones but my little brother got to them :( so now i have to buy new 1s but i was wondering which headphones have better sound and extra bass and y. Bose noise canceling headphones $300 or Beats by Dr. Dre $300

Answer
Well... If you liked your Sony Xbass: then get another one. I'm not sure which model you had - but the one I liked is the MDR-XB700. They are not too expensive and the bass along with other freq. responses are very good.

I had the Bose QC15's for travel for a few weeks and didn't like them... their active Noise Cancellation feature could not be turned off and is also uncomfortable [pressure feeling on ears]. If you turn the NC feature off - then there's no sound. Their Bass is ok - but the Dre's have slightly more... and their sound quality is also better.

Hope this helps.
I suggest buying both from a big box store... then take advantage of the 30day return policy... keep the one you like.

Metal typically sounds good close to flat equalization, you can bring down the middle a little if you want to hear some new sounds on the high and low ends but nothing to dynamic. I wouldn't add pre-amp because most metal is mastered right at the clipping range.

What would be the best settings to get the best sound quality?

kenjacy

I am using Dell by IDT Audio Settings. The equalizer are arranged in the fillowing order; 31Hz, 62Hz, 125Hz, 250Hz, 500Hz, 1kHz, 2kHz, 4kHz, 8kHz, 16kHz. I have set the following db; +15db on 31Hz, +9db on 62Hz, 0db on 125Hz, +10db on 250Hz, -1db on 500Hz, -7db on 1kHz, -15db on 2kHz, -9db on 4kHz, -3db on 8kHz, -10db on 16kHz. What would be the best settings to get the best sound quality

Answer
The best settings depend on the speakers or headphones being used.

Start with all sliders at zero (centered), then separately move each one
all the way down, all the way up, and then back to the center.
Do this with each one in turn.

Listen to the effects produced and try to remember them.
(It isn't easy, especially at first, so don't get frustrated if you forget).

To make meaningful adjustments:

If you think the relative level of a particular frequency range
is either excessive or deficient, move the corresponding slider
to try to correct it.

Each slider should be kept as close to the center of its range as possible
while still furnishing the desired effect.

No slider (especially at the low-frequency end)
should ever be left at its maximum setting.

I prefer "flat" response (the equivalent of all sliders centered)
in my audio systems, and to make mental,
rather than physical, "adjustments" to the sound.

This takes some practice, but it works very well for me,
and doesn't require that there be an equalizer available.

Answer
If REAL quality is an issue, please go for REPUTABLE brands only such as B&W, Sennheiser (most affordable), Shure, Grado, Denon, AKG, Audio-Technica, Etymotic or Beyerdynamic. Things like V-Moda, Klipsch, Sony, Panasonic, JVC and Philips are ONLY "okay-ish" indeed. Please do NOT fall a victim to FASHION ACCESSORIES by buying Sol/Republic/Revolution, Noontec Zoro's, Benetton, a-jays, iFrogz, Marley, Fanny Wang, Razer, Karl Kani, WESC, Turtle, JH, Dr.Dre/Beats/Solo, Ludacris/Soul, Koss, Skullcandy, Lady GaGa, Skullcrushers, Monsters nor Bose, because they are ALL seriously overhyped and overpriced "fashion blingbling gimmicks" with a very poor durability and sound quality, NOTHING else (and those who try to claim they are good do NOT know ANYTHING about QUALITY anyway!), BE THEM FAKE OR NOT!

Please do NOT go for overly thumping bass that distorts everything else, instead focus on good sound quality IN GENERAL.

Cuse

I've been saving money for a little while now and i've got about 60 bucks. Over the holidays i'll end up with more than 100 and i have a shoveling job which pays 25 for 2 weeks. I want to get the Solo Beats ASAP but idk if i will have 180 by the middle of january. How can i haggle the price of the headphones down?

Answer
Monster's website has a sale on them right now. I just got a pair that I'm giving myself for Christmas. They had the solos for $60 when i got them. It looks like they're $80 now.

Much better than $180-200 at Worst Buy.

I am looking for a pair of headphones that is compatible with the iPhone. By this I mean that it has the apparatus that can change the song. However, I've had issues with Apple's headphones, specifically that they break easily. I bought a pair of Sharper Image headphones as well, but they are horrible quality. What headphone design is durable, high quality, and has a song changing apparatus?

Answer
you should tell your budget ,I recommend Bose ,Skullcany ,Beats by Dr.Dre

Bose is a little expensive, but it is the best brand. The sound effect of Beats by dr.dre and Skullcandy are good and the style is so cool.So make a choice according to your need.

Can anyone suggest a good pair of sennheiser headphones in my price range?

xXdtmXx

I'm looking for an over the ear headphone design by sennheiser. My price range is about 100$-130$. I want something that's balanced and does exceptionally well in every area.

Answer
For example, Sennheiser HD518 and HD598 are good choices. As a rule of thumb, the higher the HD number with Sennheiser, the better the sound quality is in general.

I was wondering if there is a way to make wired headphones wireless and if posible if have a mic to if not its ok but just so they wireless and good battery life and reaches bit far or give me multiple ones if posible cheap price also they fannywang 3001 headphones

Answer
I suppose that you would use a wireless In Ear Monitoring system like performers use. You would have a transmitter that you would connect your sound source to, and then a belt pack receiver that you plug your headphones in.

However, for the cost of even a dirt cheap system, you could buy a great pair of wireless headphones.

"Cheap" and "Wireless Headphones" do not belong together in the same sentence.

Good luck.

Can I buy an in-line amplifier for my wired headphones?

Andy T

Being hard of hearing I would like to connect my headphones to my TV audio which is not amplified. Is there an in-line amplifier for my wired headphones? Wireless headphones are not good for me because of too much bass.

check that - your tv should be amplified - you mean it doesn't allow you to increase the headphone volume? thats weird - all tv's i've come across can pump so much watts to my headphones that it distorts at around 50% volume
