Is it possible to simulate 5.1 surround sound with just RCA cables on PC?

Amayo10054

I have a 3.5mm jack plugged into my Line-Out input on the back of my PC, and the RCA cables (naturally, just the audio) are hooked into my stereo receiver. I'm only able to get sound out of my left front speaker (and, with some fiddling, I've found out that the wires are good... if I plug them into my headphone jack and enable headphone virtualization, they both work. Tone testing on the receiver itself plays all six speakers, as does the PS3) What I'd like to know, is, why only my left speaker is working, and if there's any way to fix that... and of course, whether or not there's a way that I can fill all of the speakers with sound. (I've tried the "fill speaker" enhancement, but, I still only hear out of my front left speaker.)

Thanks!

Answer
Plug some computer speakers or headphones into your line-out jack and check if only the left plays. If so, there's either something wrong with your sound settings or the sound card itself. Check the sound mixer settings that the balance isn't set all the way left. I would try the speaker/phones output if there's a separate port (first turn the volume down in the sound mixer settings and gradually increase it to line volume). It sounds like you already tried that and it worked? Make sure you're hearing two different channels and not one doubled. Here's a test clip if you don't already have one: http://www.wikiupload.com/VFSTR71S67C5BEN

I don't think this applies to you but for completeness, I'll add: If the speakers or headphones on the line-out play normally it's your 3.5mm-RCA cable or the receiver's input.

Once you get the stereo working (on the line-out or using the headphone jack), you can get some simulated surround sound effects using the receiver's Pro Logic (or Pro Logic II) feature. It'll work better if your software player supports "Dolby Surround" out. Of course, if you just want all the speakers to play (back speakers mirroring the front), all you need is a headphone splitter.
Another option, if the receiver has 6 separate analog audio input ports, is to get a surround sound card for about $10, a couple more 3.5mm-RCA cables, and have true surround.

Can you use Sennheiser PX-100 headphones with the iPhone?

Answer
Yes. It's impedance is low enough.

You might have to get an iPhone headphone adapter if the current one doesn't fit.

What type of headphones fit iPhone?

I have an iPhone 4S and I have bought the Sennheiser CX890i, but they don't sound really good. Is it because the impedance is too high for iPhone? It's 32ohms

best in ear headphones for metal?

guitarhero

I had Skullcandy Titans and i loved them but the guy at best buy recomended them. Apperantly they are made for rap etc. I dont listen to that -_- well they lasted 7 months then broke. So now im looking for a replacement >75 bucks. I mainly listen to hardcore/post-hardcore music like Enter Shikari, Attack Attack, Miss May I etc. Mix of clean, screaming and electronic. Thanks

Answer
Try a pair of Grados... specifically the iGi earbuds. They sell for $90, and they're excellent for rock. In fact, all of Grados headphones are excellent for metal and rock. They have very detailed and punchy midranges which really bring out electric guitars. They also have very clean bass which brings out any bass guitar riffs you may listen to.

The best part about Grado is that they're made right in the US, in Brooklyn NewYork. Not China like skullcandy... If you haven't listened to a pair of headphones made in America yet (Most people have not), you'll be blown away.

Anyways, that's my suggestion. I also suggest Etymotic and Shure, but they aren't quite as awesome when it comes to metal and rock.

I used to be a huge fan of German and Austrian audio like Shure, AKG, etc... but Grado really makes rock come alive. Americans have a strong taste for rock and metal, so it's only right that our home-grown headphones excel with those Genres.

Good luck

Good rock and metal headphones?

Andrew

I'm a guitarist and a huge fan of many rock and metal bands. I listen to music constantly, but through a pair of $10 earbuds. I've decided to finally buy some expensive headphones to enjoy the music more. Could anyone make some reccomendations?
I saw the Marshall headphones, and those looked pretty cool.
Preferably ones that cost less than $150, since I'm kind of on a budget.

Answer
Rock and mental music requires a headphones that has good clarity as well as a little bass. I love those music also and my choice of headphone is the Sennheiser HD-280 PRO Headphones. They have really good clarity as well as bass and definition and not only that but they are very comfortable and durable. I have owned a pair of them since September and they have been perfect for me. They also have the noise cancelling technology which eliminate outside sounds when listening to music etc so you wont be disturbed. Importantly also, the Sennheiser HD-280 PRO Headphones are at a very reasonable price ($99.95 at amazon). I recommend these headphones to you and guarantee that you will not regret your decision to get them. See the link below:

Good headphones for a decent price?

Jake Crumb

I just came from the usual online stores that would carry some headphones I'm looking for. Christmas is around the corner and I've just been informed my little sister has been wanting them. All I see are these Dr. Dre headphones and I'm opposed to spending three hundred dollars on something like that. Anybody know of a(n online) store I could find them for a decent price; something flashy or whatever a fourteen-year-old girl would think is cool. Good sound quality, fun design, good price: just altogether good headphones. Any help?
(Not ear buds, by the way. I'm looking for those that cover your head.)
Please and thank you.

Chuck Lee

Hello every one ,
I am looking to buy a good headphone for my pc in decent price e.g : sennheiser hd201
Have any body got any suggesions to where from it should be bought or which company.
Thanks

Answer
The HD 201 would probably be a good choice in that price range...Sony and Koss make some good phones in that price range also ...the Koss porta pro and the Sony V150 come to mind....all headphones that inexpensive will have compromises, so its just a matter of which one you personally find to be the most satisfactory...

Good $50-80 In-Ear Headphones?

Alex

So I'm looking for some good quality headphones that deliver great sound. I listen to House/Trance music mostly but all kinds of electronic music now and then. I also would like them to be a little stylish like! Thanks!
Also I have tired Skullcandy (they were $20 and I didn't feel like they were worth it. I mean Cheaply made!) and I definitively can tell the difference in sound quality from my brothers sol republics that are much better for not a bad price!

Answer
Well I like to buy SkullCandy brand in-ear headphones. They give off awesome sound! And they are pretty stylish! You can buy them in all different styles and colors. But they are only like $20 not even $50. And places like Ross, Marshals, TJ MAXX, etc. you can get them for like $8. Even though they are pretty cheap, they are great quality! I have bought like 20 different pairs of them cause they have come to be my favorite brand for them. But if you want more expensive ones that are awesome quality too then go for Beats by Dre in-ear head phones. But I think you will be surprised at how well SkullCandy ones work. They are also really comfortable just fyi! I hope this helps! :)

whats the difference between noise canceling and sound isolating headphones?

ZakariaI

Answer
Noise canceling is usually when the headphones have an external microphone to listen to your environments noise, then produces a sound of equal frequency to cancel out the outside noise (two of the same frequency's cancel each other out). Noise isolating just uses padding and soundproofing on the headphones and cushion to block out the exterior noise.

Noise Canceling are usually better, but more expensive.(Bose usually uses this - which explains their price)

Nowadays, many headphones especially in-ear are noise isolating headphones. They just use materials that don't let sound transfer through easily to isolate your inner ear form the outside, hence, blocking out a good majority.

Are there headphones that cancel outside noise very well?

Bobby

I mean noise of cars, boom boxes, kids bouncing balls on the streets, skateboards and so on...

Answer
Yes, there are two types: Passive noise cancellation (PNC) and Active noise cancellation (ANC).

Active noise cancelling uses electronics to disable sound, more-so the lower noises, something like 500Hz and under. Depending on how good the noise cancelling microphone is, ANC usually gives something like 25-40dB of noise cancellation. A good example of passive noise cancelling headphones would be the Audio-Technica ATHANC-7.

Passive noise cancelling is more associated with earbuds, which make a tight seal around the ear canal to block out ambient noise. The noise cancelling properties aren't limited to only the low frequencies. Some earbuds only give around 20dB of isolation, while canalphones can offer up to 40dB of isolation. A good example of noise cancelling earbuds are Etymotic MC-5.

Good Headphones for Video Editing?

Ben

Using them in a class. They need to have clear crisp sound, and minimal noise leakage and good noise cancellation. And they can't be to hard on my wallet.

Answer
It depends what you preferred (closed-back / opened-air, headphones / buds etc.).

If you want decent quality for a cheap price - look into Sennheiser (models HD 201, HD202, HD203, HD205 II and beyond - depends on your budget).
Another maker to look for will be Audio Technica (ATH-M20, ATH-M30, ATH-M40SF, ATH-M35, etc.).

How can I keep my kids occupied on the airplane??

Wizzle

I'm traveling cross-country on an airplane without my husband to help with my 3 kids (ages 4, 5, and 6). Do you have any ideas of how I can keep them occupied on the airplane? If I bring their "learning laptops" or Leapsters, will they be able to play with them without driving everyone else batty? Electronic devices are probably my best bet for keeping them quiet, but those make noise themselves and don't have headphones. I want to be sensitive to the other travelers, but also to my children at the same time. Any tips?
Can I clarify that our total travel time (not including driving to/from the airport, which adds an extra hour and a half) will be 10 hours and 50 minutes. I also cannot afford to buy new gaming systems when they just got Leapsters for Christmas and the airfare alone for this trip is over $1000. So basically I guess my question is this - would my travelmates rather hear the kids playing/singing/chatting amongst themselves at a 4-5-6 year old level, or would they rather hear electronic devices? LOL It's more of a trade off... They can't color for 10 hours! Or read quietly for 10 hours (when only one is a real "reader" anyway). Me reading them a story only takes about 5-10 minutes. :)

Answer
colouring in books
comics
gameboys
portable dvd player and some dvds of the kid's fav shows
make them stay up really late before the flight and then they're so tired they sleep the whole time

What Are Some Good Headphones to Mix In????

prime

I need some good headphones to mix in FL Studio(Fruity Loops)

Preferably under $100 and give a good true sound.......

What headphones do you guys think I should get???????

I was planing to buy these: http://www.behringer.com/HPS5000/index.cfm?lang=ENG

Answer
Probably not best to mix with headphones. Headphones are great for hearing things in music that u wouldnt hear otherwise, but in terms of organising the different tracks then there is no substitute for monitors. They provide 100x more spatial information than headphones. Not to mention, headphones for <$100 probably wont give a good true sound. I would recommend investing in some monitors.

Alesis Monitor Ones Mk2 are good entry-level monitors. Monitors dont mess with the sound at all, so they give a true sound. Whereas speakers often have their own setting which affects the music (some are bass-heavy, some are treble-heavy etc). This means if u mix with speakers, then suppose u are mixing on bass-heavy speakers, then you will increase the treble so it sounds balanced. However when someone plays it on treble-heavy speakers, the treble will be very overpowering.

what headphones are best for mixing?

kill666cha

I need some new headphones for my college course, i need some that are good for mixing a track, cant have any bass boosts or any boosts at all
don't say dr dre beats they have to much bass i need some HeadPhones where everything is nearly equal

Answer
Heey, I'm a fellow college student here as well.

The Beats by Dre have MONSTER bass boost. I would definitely not recommend them for mixing or mastering.

I recently reviewed Shure SRH940 headphones for the same price as the Beats, and they destroy them in every way but bass quantity: http://www.head-fi.org/products/shure-srh-940/reviews/5656

Take a look at some of the Sennheiser (HD-1-ii), Shure (SRH-840), V-Moda Crossfade M80, or Audio Technica ATH-M50 if you want headphones with a balanced sound signature. All 4 of these are extremely well-built in comparison to most other headphones and the Sennheiser ones actually have replaceable parts (in case one part of the headphone does break). The Sennheiser, V-Moda, and Audio Technica headphones I mentioned are known to be really comfortable and have good noise isolation (meaning you can listen to less of the outside noise, more of your music at the same volume level) if that's what you're looking for as well.

All 3 are also under $150! They are great budget headphones for college students looking for audio quality.

Head-Fi.org, great place for audio question if you have any more by the way.

Audio Computer Cables DIY?

LaDii3 j0k

Okay so i have a monitor with built in speakers the problem is i dont have the audio cables to connect the monitor to the tower. I was wondering if theres anyway to make your own, either with two headphone or a digital audio cable? Or anything else?

Answer
Sure. Cut your headphone cables as long as possible, then strip the insulation. If you are
lucky you'll have plastic insulation in all of the wires. Leave like 1/4" exposed copper in the
inner wire, and just twist them together. Put some electrical tape and now connect the shielding
(that's the mesh like outer wires). Put a little more tape, repeat for the other channel and you are
done. Also if your computer has HDMI output and your monitor will take HDMI cables, you
don't need an audio cable since the sound is transmitted via the HDMI cable. Good luck!

how can i extend my headphone cable up to 5 meters?

safi

i just wanna try increasing the length of my headphone cable to about 5 mt.
And i don't wanna use ready made extenders.

Answer
How good are you at splicing audio cable? Remember a little crap will affect performance of the cable greatly.

Either buy a set of headphones with a decent length of cable (sennnheiser) or use an extention to retain audio purity. If your worried about unplugging the extentions use either velcro or tie wraps to lock the connections together. Simply fold the cables together around the connection and tie wrap to prenent any tugging to affect the connection, instead you pull on the tie wrap/velcro strap.

Is it weird to wear dj headphones?

BOBBY

I just bought skull candy headphones, is it weird to wear them on the way to school?
And will people make fun of me

Answer
Skull Candy headphones are not real DJ headphones. Skull Candy makes DJ "Style" headphones, they are designed for regular people but made to look like DJ headphones.

They are purely a fashion accessory and designed to be "trendy". Wearing them in public is fine because that's what they're for, you would get laughed at if you were actually a DJ and wore them for a gig.

Almost all real DJ headphones are black, silver, or a combination of both. DJ's don't need fancy looking headphones, they need headphones that isolate really well, won't break if they're banged around, and are loud as sh~t.

What are the BEST DJ headphones out there?

Connor Bun

My Scullcandy headphones are beginning to break, and I need some good quality DJ headphones that are durable and can withstand very loud noises.

I thank whoever answers this. :)

Answer
First, SkullCandy headphones are not DJ headphones they are DJ STYLE headphones, their build qulity is inferior to professional DJ headphones and they cannot handle the volumes necessary, the audio often becomes muddy or distorted.

As to the best out there there are a number of reputable brands: Pioneer, Allen & Heath, Sony, Shure, Denon, Technics, and Ultrasone are some of the ones that come to mind.

1. Pioneer
- Good: HDJ-500 **
- Better: HDJ-1000 *
- Best: HDJ-2000 *

2. Allen & Heath
- Better: Xone XD-40
- Best: Xone XD-53

3. Sony
- MDR-V500
- MDR-V700 *
- MDR-7509

4. Shure
- SRH-550
- SRH-750
- SRH-940

5. Denon
- DNHP-1000

6. Technics
- RPDH-1200

7. Ultrasone
- DJ1-Pro

* Personally I recommend the Pioneer HDJ-1000's or HDJ-2000's or the Sony MDR-V700's
** The Pioneer HDJ-500's are great if you're on a budget.

Stay away from: SkullCandy, Reloop, and WeSC. They may look good but they are not designed for performance DJ's. The quality is lower and they do not go as loud as the headphones I listed.

I also wouldn't recommend the Dr. Dre headphones, although of decent quality the lack of swivels and folding means they would be prone to damage from transport and constant adjustment.

What are good headphones to workout with?

Tyler

That are not earbuds, they hurt my ear. And preferably having good bass.

Answer
Ok, I know you said that earbuds hurt your ear, however I really think that you should take a look at these. http://www.earphonesolutions.com/westoneum1.html
They are the most comfortable pair of earphones/headphones I have ever used. They are also one of the most impressive pairs I have used. Most earbuds do hurt my ears, but not these. They have foam earpieces so they are very comfortable, they also stay in your ear and don't fall out as well as blocking noise.

best workout headphones?

ummmmmmmmm

I need some new headphones. I want sound cancelation, but they also have to be good to work out in. I was thinking studios by dre but they leak noise. I want some answers of headphones good for working out over ear

Answer
I use skull candy ear phones. They beat head phone by a bajillion. They cancel out a lot of noise, and people have to yell to get my attention. They are reaaallllyyyy cheap too. Like $5-$6. That's great for earphones this good:) hahaha I sound like a commercial:) tehe
But yeah the only problem is the lil rubber replaceable ear buds that are easily lost. But they come with 3 diff. Pairs so it's all good:) I use the smallest pair so they completely block all outside sound.

Headphones + Mic combo (phone headset) causes others to hear an echo?

Matt S

I have a headphones + microphone corded phone headset for a 3.5mm jack. The mic is separate from the headphones-- you can plug in any pair of headphones to the mic portion of the device. Well, this headset worked fine for a couple months, but now people who I talk to using it report hearing an echo of my voice. Not just a faint echo, but it literally sounds like I am simply saying things over, as if the sound is being outputted twice. It doesn't matter what pair of headphones I use; the echo is still there. I am wondering if there is anyone out there who knows much about this sort of thing and why it might be echoing like this.

Answer
A friend had the same problem and we tried a lot of stuff to get rid of it but no! After a lot of test and trouble i saw that he had a new cam installed and there was hes problem the cam also had an inbuilt mic! we had to turn the mic of in the cam and the problem disappeared! so make sure u don't have anny other stuff on speakers or/ mics in other stuff! i hope it helps!

Apple Mic with Headphones on Windows 7?

chh1266

How can I make my Apple earphones (they have a mic) work on Windows 7 HP laptop as both a mic and earphones? Or does it work automatically, although my laptop has a separate port for mics and earphones? Thanks in advance.

Answer
This mic/headphone combo should be detected automatically and work automatically, if it does not, try launching windows update manually to get a driver for this device. If you still have a problem, please verify you set the mic/headset as default recording device in the windows sound settings (under control panel)

Help me find good headphones for PC games and videos?

Mahboi

I need to buy some new headphones because I'm tired of my old cheap ones. I mostly want to use them for playing PC games and watching YouTube videos. I want most of all voices to be very clear, but I would like music to sound good as well. I do not want them to have a built in mic, but want them to be over the ear. The most I can spend would be $80.

What would you reccomend?

Answer
I was researching headphones for an extensive period a short time ago and the following are what I discovered to be the best for the money. I'm sure there may be more headphones but this is quite an extensive list already.

They are all very recommended and well received budget headphones from members of Head-Fi.org. It will all come down to your preference, check them all out, read the reviews, you won't be disappointed with any of them to be honest.

Video games?

baby.facex

Answer
A video game is a game that involves interaction with a user interface to generate visual feedback on a video device. The word video in video game traditionally referred to a raster display device. However, with the popular use of the term "video game", it now implies any type of display device. The electronic systems used to play video games are known as platforms; examples of these are personal computers and video game consoles. These platforms are broad in range, from large computers to small handheld devices. Specialized video games such as arcade games, while previously common, have gradually declined in use.

The input device normally used to manipulate video games is called a game controller, which varies across platforms. For instance, a dedicated console controller might consist of only a button and a joystick, or feature a dozen buttons and one or more joysticks. Early personal computer based games historically relied on the availability of a keyboard for gameplay, or more commonly, required the user to purchase a separate joystick with at least one button to play. Many modern computer games allow the player to use a keyboard and mouse simultaneously.

Beyond the common element of visual feedback, video games have utilized other systems to provide interaction and information to the player. Chief examples of these are sound reproduction devices, such as speakers and headphones, and an array of haptic peripherals, such as vibration or force feedback.

Headphones for iPod?

blink.blin

Most people's iPod's heaphones break easily, and me and my sister's broke in less then a year we got them, so I wanted to buy a new iPod headphones for my sister's graduation present, and myself. I looked online at Apple's website, and I found out that the ratings are mostly 3 star out of 5. I'm not sure, cuz some people say it's really good, and some people say it break really easily too. So I'm wondering which headphones I should buy. I also are interested in Sony's headphones, but still not sure. Please help me.

Answer
Depends on what you want to spend. Right now I have a pair of sony ex 71's, and I love them. By far the most comfortable pair of headphones anywhere, and are nice for anyone who isnt an audiophile. You can probably get them from amazon for about 30 bucks.

If you are looking to spend more, shure makes fantastic headphones, but the draw back is they are expensive. The sony's I mention compare to the e2's, but if you go up from there the sound quallity will improve a lot. The nice thing about them, aside from their sound quallity, is the headphones come with a bunch of attachments, you just need to find the right fit + they are durable, the only drawback that the sony's have.

I'd say, you're best off w/ the ex 71's. Your sister will love 'em, and however you look at it, any in ear headphone will be better than anything from apple. In fact, the apple headphones are made by sony too, but most of the sony branded ones are better.

Question about headphones and ipods?

Ok. Simple question. Is it better to invest in a nice ipod, or nice headphones?

Answer
Any old iPod will do. Once you have that, then as long as it has as much storage as you need, and as long as it works, then it's worth buying the good headphones. The 'phones that come with your iPod are only really good enough just for making sure the iPod works. You can get MUCH better by spending as little as $50. Of course you can spend MUCH more, depending on how much you value sound quality. Or how much you value being a fashion victim, if you buy Beats.

Personally, I use an iPod Classic, and it does the job just fine. I usually listen to it through Shure SE530 in-ear-monitors, or Bowers and Wilkins P5 headphones (although I have 5 or 6 other pairs of headphones too). The iPod will only be replaced when it breaks. I'll add to the headphone collection whenever I can afford to!

Which is better: Bose around ear headphones vs Klipsch Image s4?

Jackman C

right now i have the bose around ears. They're nice. paid 125. great sound quality. but i'm just wondering if i'd be better off returning them and buying the cheaper klipsch image s4 earbuds and save some money..

but i just don't know which is gonna have better sound quality.

Answer
It isn't really fair to compare full-size headphones to in-ears in most cases. However, in this case I can say for sure that the S4 are the better headphone. In order to achieve the "popular" sound signature that they are so famous for, Bose designs their headphones to have a very colorful sound signature. The S4's are not guilty of this - they are very neutral and balanced headphones. They would definitely be the audiophile's pick, but you may be used to the "fake" sound of Bose and apple earphones by now.

Bose in ear headphones vs klipsch image s4?

chickenwin

which is the better headphone?

Answer
All highs, no lows, it must be Bose. Klipsch is based in Indiana and was founded in Arkansas. They also produce professional grade speakers, not junk science. I don't have personal experience with either specific model, but I'd buy Klipsch over Bose any day of the week.

Looking for headphones made good for mastering and mixing music?

I am looking for headphones that are made for mastering and mixing music. Headphone like beats have too much bass and they are not good for mastering. Any recommendations from people that really know about this stuff?

Best headphones for under $100?

Navi

I'm looking for a really good set of headphones mainly for listening to music on my iPod or on my computer preferably for under $100. I'd like them to be fairly cool looking too but I don't really mind the look too much, it's just a preference.

I listen to a very wide range of music from power pop, death metal, rock, alternative, trance, deep house, ambient, classical, and some dubstep. I've looked at a few but I constantly hear different things about each pair. Steelseries' Siberia V2 looked really good and it'd be awesome to double as a gaming headset but if they're only just subpar or average for music, I won't bother. I'm not sure about them though, as I've never tested them first hand.

My second choice is the Sony MDR V55s. I tried them on at Best Buy and they sounded amazing but the only small gripe I have is that there isn't any noise isolation which kind of bugs me. Then there were the Headrush Fusions which I randomly came across but know virtually nothing about. And finally the Audio Technica AD700s looked really good but I heard there was virtually no bass at all which is worrisome.

Which of these would be the best option or does anyone else have any better suggestions?

Answer
Normally I would say either Audio Technica or Sennheiser - but the model you sepecify (AD700s) is an open air one, which means you will pretty much hear everything around you.
Also, the new model of the AD700 is over your price range (~$250 -$300).

If you care about noise cancelling, look into Audio Technica ATH-ANC7B which have active noise-cancelling and are also closed-back headphones, however- they cost $135.
Another option is their ATH-M30 ($60) - but they are not noise-cancelling by defenision.

As for Sennheiser - get the highest HD model you can get that is a closed-back one.
For example: Sennheiser HD-280 PRO

Good headphones for PC?

Harrison

Hi, I was wondering if any of you know any headphones for under 120$ that are DURABLE (won't break easily, and last a long time), RELIABLE (my last headphone kept turning off and on all the time and it was VERY annoying), and are for PC (no console headphones or anything, I just want to be able to plug it in via USB and be done with it). If anyone can find one for me that would be amazing! :D

Answer
Depends on what you do on your computer.
If you watch a lot of movies, listen to a lot of bassy music, and generally want a more "fun" sounding headphone, audiophile headphones + a $10 clip on mic is the way to go. I personally own the Audio Technica ATH-M50 with a $10 Zalman clip-on mic (totaling ~$130), and the sound on both is amazing. It's a bit cumbersome since there are two cables, but since they never move, it's not really a problem.

If you're a Counter-Strike pro who needs to listen to footsteps in B Tunnel, listens to orchestral/classical music, and doesn't care about bass, then the Audio Technica AD700 headphones + a $10 clip on mic (~$110) should work. The AD700s are known for their positional accuracy and their total lack of bass.

But of course, there are always ones that fit right in the middle of the two extremes. Most headsets I've used fall into this category. The SteelSeries Siberia V2 headset (~$70) is very neutral. It still has some positional accuracy along with some bass. Very light and comfortable. Two other headphones that need a clip on mic that are worth mentioning are the Shure SRH440 ($100) and Sennhesier HD449 ($90). Very neutral, maybe even moreso than the Siberias.

Most of these aren't USB, unfortunately.

Best bass headphones?

Logan

I'm looking for some really good bass Headphones. Me and my friend have competitions about this stuff. anyway i want some over ear headphones under $100 that have better bass than the skullcandy skullcrushers. and also some good in ear bass headphones for when im on the move. suggestions?

Answer
Best? This depends on what kind of bass you're talking about. The bass in headphones by skull candy and beats is really overemphasized and the quality of bass is more of a weighty bass. They're trying to simulate a subwoofer. Good bass on the other hand is clear, deep, has an impact and has strong presence rather than a weight to it. The idea of "best bass" is a bit subjective.

$100 isn't a lot and if your looking at bass, then it will be harder to find since at that price range, bass emphasized headphones are sort of limited to the Skullcandy's. The only other thing I can suggest is the XB700 by Sony. They're a bit over $100 but have better quality bass. Whether or no you think its "better" in your sense, I wouldn't know. Ear buds are even harder, but again Sony's XB line is focused on bass emphasis. There arn't too many headphones at your price range that you'll find to have better bass.

Best/ Cheapest Headphones for Bass?

Connor

My price range is below $100 so I know that I wouldn't be getting "top notch" quality, but what are the best headphones in that price range for bass? What I mean is, something that is great for dubstep and everything else. I want to feel my face VIBRATE, and have bass so powerful that I literally get a BASS MASSAGE. If there isn't anything like this in my price range, then just tell me the closest thing to it. THANKS!

Answer
Try sony headphones. I have the sony mdr v55 dj headphones and they have great bass and sound great. They have great durability and great sound quality. They are about $50 to $80 but they are worth every penny. I think sony is the best.

Headphone suggestions?

Steven

I am looking for
1. Over the ear
2. At leat 55mm
3. Deep bass
4. High clarity and quality sound
5. High response range
6. Under $600

Answer
Deep bass? No want you want is "detailed bass response for frequencies around 40-70hz".
"Deep bass" means nothing these days.

High response range: any decent headphone has a decent response range, quite alot of people, including me a bit ago, seem to think that we actually hear 20hz-20000hz while listening to music... simple fact is its more like 50hz-16000hz. High response range means very little....

At least 55mm? Why is that? Is it because beats studio have 55mm drivers or you just have to have 55mm drivers? WHY. (If you have a legitimate reason I'd love to take back my protaganising and sarcastic statement)

"High clarity and quality sound" THIS IS MOST IMPORTANT. (excluding comfort/fit)

Now for some suggestions,
Audio Technica ATH-M50

Audio Technica Pro500mk2/pro700mk2

Aiaiai TMA-1

Sennheiser HD280 Pro

Sony MDR1R (Black)

Sennheiser HD 598/558

Shure SRH550DJ

Sennheiser HD 25-1-II

Beyerdynamic DT 770/880/990

Thats all i can think of right now, so basically there's many more that deserve to be on that list.

Buying headphones?

SWAY

I wanted to buyheadphones that play loud, but Is there a way you can tell before you buy them?

Answer
You should be able to test them in the store you plan to buy them in. A known brand of headphones should give you all the volume you want without distortion.

I know you don't want to hear this, but can I advise you NOT to play your headphones LOUD? I have lost considerable hearing due to my listening to loud headphones in my youth. It hurts me to see young people with headphones on and I can hear the audio from a few feet away. Same with car stereos. I learned the hard way. Please don't make the same mistake. Besides, listening to music too loud can hide the gentler nuances of good music; even if it's rock or heavy metal.

Best buy headphones.?

Trident

Can anyone tell me what headphones you can test out at best buy? I need the largest list possible! Thanks!

Answer
I just went to Best Buy and checked out some headphones; here's the ones I remember that were available for testing.

Beats By Dre Pros
Beats By Dre Studios
Beats By Dre Solo HD
Bose QC15
Bose AE2
Bose QC3
Skullcandy Hesh

Sorry, that's all I remember, it's been a little while.

Best of Luck

Metal endorsed headphones?

rainman

Am looking for some new headphones, budget is between$60-$150. Almost every higher end headphone company pimps out rappers (ludacris, dre, quincymjones, etc) although those headphones are nice to look at, they are way overpriced and too bass heavy for people who don't even listen to that type of music. Are there any metal artists that endorse certain types of headphones? If not what would be a great pair of in ear headphones for metal music?

Answer
For low priced phones try the HD201 from Sennheiser...$22 USA or £15 UK and don't laugh. They outclass plenty of phones at four times the price.
http://www.reviewcentre.com/reviews89379.html
http://www.testfreaks.co.uk/headphones-headsets/sennheiser-hd-201/

AKG 440 or 450....very good and very comfortable.
The 440 is discontinued so they're going very cheap. Good buy.
The 450 is the new version at $80...
http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=akg+K450+headphone&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-GB:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=shop&cid=17190699678556457131&sa=X&ei=NzksT9X_L6TI0QW8xfWsCA&ved=0CF8Q8wIwAQ

Have a look in a music store where they have a load of phones hooked up. You can do a side-by-side listening test then.
Best of luck

electric shock when touch casing, headphone metal parts.?

SAJID

I get electric shock from my PC casing. Also on the screws, headphone metal parts, usb cabel and metal parts. This happens even when the PC is turned off.

What is the problem & how I can solve it?

Answer
In Northern climates, winter means drier air.
Compounding this are central heating units which further decrease humidity.
When you walk across carpets, especially with rubber soles on, your body acts like a capacitor, and stores static electricity. The drier the air, the greater tendency to 'charge' yourself.
The computer (and other metals really) have a different 'electric potential'.
When you touch one of those items, that difference in potential causes electrons to rapidly migrate from one to the other (that's the shock you feel).
Going barefoot helps alleviate this, but it's an ongoing task to rid yourself of excess electrons without the shock.
You could try carrying a metal pen (or similar) and touch devices with that, which will reduce the snap and irritation.

There's an outside chance that the ground at the receptacle has not been done properly, which would contribute to the issue.
There are devices that can detect if the outlet wiring is sub-standard.
Here's an example: http://www.homedepot.com/p/Gardner-Bender-120-VAC-GFCI-Outlet-Tester-1-clam-5-clams-master-GFI-3501/202867890?N=boff
You might want to get one if you're in an older home, or one that's been remodeled: there could be more serious issues at several outlets.

Stylish, good quality, cheap headphone brands?

animefreak

I really need to get me a pair of headphones, but I'm really stingy with my money. I've bought a couple cheap $5 or less headphones, but quality stinks and breaks easily. I don't like the small headphones that you stick in your ear or hangs on your earlobe.

I like headphones that have about this shape and size:

http://www.comparestoreprices.co.uk/images/sk/skull-candy-skullcandy-hesh-headphones-colour-shattered-rasta.jpg

I know of skull candy, it has an nice variety, good quality, and very stylish, but the prices bother me.

I'm looking for headphones that are around $20 or cheaper. I'd like a little style to them, but not much is required. Of course, it needs to have quality sound, and wont break easily.

Do any of you know of some good brands that I could check out?

Answer
Then again, there is absolutely NO point in getting rubbish fashion "gimmicks" that break very easily and have to be replaced all the time! Please reconsider, and look for REPUTABLE brands only that will last much much longer. These quality brands include Sennheiser, Shure, Grado, Denon, AKG, Etymotic and Audio-Technica.

Best headphone brands with really good sound quality?

Why Hello

I've done my research and I've already heard that Beats, Skullcandy, and Bose aren't worth it. Instead, I've seen a lot of good reviews on Sennheiser, Grado, Denon, Shure, Audio Technica, etc, but I can't seem to decide from which brand I should buy over-the-ear headphones from. I don't really care too much about the price, as long as it's under $500. In your experience, which brand would you say is the best in delivering high-quality sound?

Thanks.

Answer
Just like loudspeakers all headphones have completely different sound quality's, so we cannot hear for you and its hard to hear every model as most headphones are not available for audition.

So our best bet is to go by reviews. This also is were it gets tricky as there are only a handful of audio specialist I would trust their opinions so choose your resources very carefully.

The best place to get good advice and reviews is Absolute Sound, and Stereophile. The reviewers are very knowledgeable, know good sound, and have years of experience. They also review the better headphones on the market. I will include a link to their sites, and Absolute sound also has some really good 'free" down-loadable user guides and reviews on headphones I think you will find very use full.

"but" before you run out and buy the best headphones you think are going to have the sound you want, understand the requirements of the headphones to get good sound. Most high quality headphones benefit largely from a good headphone amplifier. Granted on many headphones you can always add one down the line, but its important to know so you aren't to disappointed in the sound you get when you first get them.

Second is to understand the importance in the source material. Forget about playing Mp3's its a waist of time and will sound like crap on even the best headphones. You need to ether play cd's or high resolution music downloads, or even analog records.

Keep in mind if your wanting to use them with a ipod you can burn Cd's at full resolution onto itunes, which will give you cd quality music on your ipod.

As for brands and your price range, Absolutely Sennheiser are great I own a pair of HD650's which I think are excellent, and they can work directly with a ipod, you wont get really high volumes, but sound good. Sennheiser do sound better with a headphone amplifier as do most but they are not bad. They are a dat shy in the low bass in my opinion but the bass is very detailed and articulate. You might check out the HD600's they have alittle more punch in the bass certainly not as accurate in the bass and not as detailed but they might have more the sound your after.

There are many other brands you certainly want to look into, Hifiman, AKG, Grado's, Beyerdynamics,

My all time favorites are still the Stax but are very expensive and must be driven by a high quality headphone amplifier. The Hifiman are getting all the hot reviews right now but have no dealers so you have to buy direct.

What are the best over the ear headphones in a price range from 100-300 dollars?

Jordan

I have been looking for a pair of headphones over the past month or so, and have not been too successful. I really love my music, I listen to it a lot, but I don't DJ or any of that business. So overall, I'm looking for comfort, quality, and style (the first two being the most important) in a pair of headphones, and I don't want to dump cash towards worthless headphones. Out of my month of research (which was very vague, don't criticize me >.<) I came up with 3 options. I am completely open to more suggestions, but I would like a reasons behind your thoughts.Thank you so much!

-Sennheiser (not sure on the model)
-Beats by Dre Pro
-Audio-Technica (not sure on the model)

The beats are on the list solely because my brother works at Best Buy, and I can get an awesome discount, I know they're overpriced, but I can get them about 50-65% off

Answer
First off, Beats at 50% to 65% off are still overpriced.....

If we're going up to $300 then you could look at the following headphones which I own and love:
Sennheiser HD 25-1 II
Bowers and Wilkins P5

The B&Ws are more expensive (at $300 versus the Sennheisers at $200), but the difference is worth it to me. The sound is more balanced and the headphones are more comfortable and better looking. The Sennheisers still sound great, but they seem to be just a little bit too bright sometimes. They're also extremely sturdy headphones, being a professional model, but kinda plain looking.

You could also look at the Audio Technica ATH-M50 which seems to be recommended quite often as a Beats replacement. I haven't actually heard this headphone yet, but the reviews on http://www.head-fi.org are pretty good.

My best advice to you would be to spend some time hanging out on HeadFi, reading reviews of the headphones I've mentioned and the ones that I'm sure other people will mention. Before long you'll come up with a list of headphones that you're interested in checking out. Now comes the fun part - load up your iPod with some favorite tunes and head off to a shop somewhere to listen and compare. And whatever you decide to get, you'll know that you decided for a good reason instead of just making a random purchase...

Decent headphones for under 100 dollars?

Travis

I'm looking to get my boyfriend a christmas present, and he listens to music all the time, so I figured I'd get him a pair of new headphones.

I'm pretty sure he doesn't wear over-ear headphones, and just uses IEM's. (in-ear)

I'm looking to spend around 50-70 dollar range.

Any options for me?

Answer
That's a pretty big budget - lots of good earphones out there that will fit. Personally, I really enjoy my VSonic GR02 Bass Edition earphones even though they were a little less than $50. They sound great with full bass and great clarity, better than the twice as expensive Klipsch S4a I was using before.

I would highly recommend checking out this guide: http://theheadphonelist.com/headphone-list/ , putting in your preferred budget, and searching for the best noise isolation and sound quality, then finding out which of the sets that come up are also available in your local stores. There's also a shorter guide here: http://theheadphonelist.com/articles/earphone-buyers-guide/

You can also check out head-fi.org - lots of knowledgeable reviews on there. It's THE place to go for headphones discussion.
