Why does music sound higher pitched when louder?

I've noticed that when wearing both headphones, music sounds almost a semitone higher than it does if I wear just one? Does anyone know why this happens? I assume it is something to do with the volume as I have noticed an even more drastic discrepancy in perceived pitch inside and outside of a club.

Human ears are sensitive to a certain bandwidth of frequencies. Picture a bell shaped curve with mid-range freqs being at the top of the curve. The extreme lows and extreme highs are harder for us to hear. By increasing the volume, the extreme highs (and lows) are easier to pick up. Extreme highs have a harder time penetrating walls or other obstructions. Lows, on the other hand go through walls and floors much easier.

First question: Okay so I have a Sony 4GB Walkman MP3 Player. Does this mp3 player have bad sound quality or are all music devices the same? I know it depends on the quality of the song too. Also are all headphones compatible with my mp3 player? I know there are some headphones that are made for apple products but does that mean i cant use them on this?

Second question: What over the head headphones should I get that would work with this? I was looking at the Blueant Embrace Stereo Headphones but I don't know much about headphones. I just want something that could block as much sound as possible, sound good, and look okay. Oh and not too expensive so maybe up to like $200. Any ideas?

I know some of the Walkman model had sound issues (but I don't remember which series) but I think it was only one or two. Most of the Sony Walkmans are o.k, but I haven't tried them myslef lately.
I think all headophones with the proper jack (3.5mm) will work - I think the problem is relevant to smartphones (and not music players).

If you want something that blocks sounds from the outside you need to think if you want to get an active noise cancelling pair - or a passive one:
A passive one means it cover your ears well so it creates a "mini sound room" in each ear (the isolation is far from being good, but will do for most bus rides). An active ones is a pair that creates white noise to shield outside noise- they work with AA or AAA batteries and cost more.

Altec-Lansings have great sound quality with bass boost. They make maybe four or five different ones with the inline mic, too, but the ones available at their web site are more expensive than the ones in some stores. If you live in the midwest where there are Miejer stores, they carry them in the cellular accessories department, not in iPod accessories. Or go to Altec-Lansing.com. If you don't need the mic, Sony and Logitech are your next best bets for sound quality, durability and a moderate price.

voice was done with headphones reversing I believe its called polarity, well what I am trying to do is convert it into digital, meaning a form where I can perhaps remix and add to it, it sounds fine on a old cassette player, but I used a converter called Tape2PC did not work well at all... HELP!!!

You are limiting your choice by saying only Sennheiser.
They do make some good headphones, but none come to mind that are closed, good quality and below that price point.

The only ones I can think of are the HD280pro and HD215, but I've never liked those particular models much at all.

I'd say get something like the Shure SRH840. It really sounds like the perfect headphone for you. I reckon it sounds better and it is definitely built better than anything Sennheiser has at that price.

Others to consider: AKG Q460, Koss TBSE1 or Audio Technica ATH-M50.

I would definitely recommend the Sennheisers over the Sony model. Sennheiser's have great sound quality with punchy bass and smooth mids/highs, and they have excellent build quality. I don't have any personal experience with the Sony headphones you mentioned, but I have tried many models of Sennheisers and have always come away impressed.

I have been using my Sennheiser HD-280 Pro headphones for over 2 years now and haven't had any problems. A full review of my experience with these headphones can be found at the link below.

Would electrical wires/plastics release toxic materials if a solvent was used on it?

I wiped my over ear headphones (cables and all) with a disinfecting wipe intended for hard non porous surfaces. I believe there are solvents in these wipes. My headphones are a hard plastic with a thin plastic for the ear cushions. Could these solvents have released toxic materials from the wire or plastic such as pvc? Or other toxic materials?

Well, depends on the chemicals used in the solvent. Just check the ingredients used in making the solution and the components of the earphones(Google them). Also, Google the reactions possible between various components. It'll take some time, but when you get the results, you'll have a sigh of relief.
By the way, there is minimum probability of your ears getting affected with all those toxic chemicals/materials, unless and until you have not wiped them with a dry cloth. If you still have the doubt, then take a bath! And wipe off your ears with a clean, dry towel(clean with the help of your little finger).

Don't use headphones at all!

Assuming you are talking about outside running, you must be aware of the hazards that are common. Being alert to traffic, fellow runners, bikers, and walkers is important. Also, and especially for women, one must be alert so that you aren't an easy target for crime. I'm serious.

Running isn't the most exciting sport for most. It becomes much better, however, if you run with others. Join a running club, or enlist a friend. I think once you begin running with people, you'll see that you don't need music at all.

Make sure the speakers are plugged into the green jack. Also make sure it securely plug in and powered (If amplified).

The 32 Ohm version is easy to run from portable device, Smartphones, Tablets and iPods etc...saying that though a headphone amp can add some character...

Don't rush in though...get the headphones and see what you think....if you feel they might benefit from something extra then...do some research...check head-fi for some opinions and then search 'You Tube' and 'Amazon' and check the reviews...

Its more fun doing a bit of research and later on if you feel you want to upgrade or just try something else you will know what 'sources' you can trust...

Honestly, it probably wouldn't make much difference. A headphone amp really only makes sense if you're using headphones that are a bit tough for your Zune or iPhone to drive. The S4s are an easy load so they should be fine straight out of whatever device you plug them into....

Sometimes it's kind of difficult to understand quality of headphones just by reading specs on the packing. For example, Defender headphones made in China costing no more than 10$ have the same specs as Sennheiser Pro headphones have. A manufacture doesn't always tells all the truth, I guess.

What do you think is the best wireless 7.1 headphones for ps3?

during the next month I wanna buy Wireless headphones for ps3 wit 7.1 surround
I looked a little bit and found turtle beach px5 but it has 4 out of 5 stars since some costumers said that the headphones are swishing and popping.
What do you think should I get?
Ok I looked it the Ps3 headphones up and they look good and are cheap. The px5 is about 200 so what do you guess is better?

Sony is known for their audio equipment, I'm sure there 7.1 headset will sound just great.

I myself am waiting for the Sony headset, but if you want one sooner, Turtle Beach is the way to go.

I can't remember anything about this song except the video. It's 2 blonde girls, one has very straight hair with very straight bangs, the other girls hair is wavy. It starts with them laying on a beach, and the straight bang girl puts on headphones. Anybody know what I'm talking about? Thanks!

Can my cat hear music under my headphones?

I only have my sound on 2%, but if I put the headphones infront of her, she flicks her ears and has a sniff, so I think she can hear something then. But what if I am sitting at my desk, and she is on my bed?

Like dogs, cats have much greater sensitivity to sound and can hear much better than humans. So yes, she hears your music.

What headphones deliver the best bass under 200$?

I'm searching for over the ear headphones that I don't only hear my music but feel it. What I mean I would like headphones that hve a nice boom to the bass. Nothing to the pointer where it distorts the sound. Keep in mind under 200. Thanks!

I am actually in the exact same situation as you: looking for over the ear headphones that have great sound clarity and extremely good sensitivity to bass (nice sound and intenseness from bass.. I am a big techno/ club music fan and I love and appreciate music) and am willing to spend about $150 but will go up slightly if necessary. I've been doing a lot of research and have already tried out some headphones as well as gotten input from a couple of people.
I got some headphones from eh brands that I won't even mention to save time as presents for Christmas and returned them.
I tried out the Bose AE2 headphones for $150, but they weren't good at all... nothing special about them... not good sound clarity and definitely no bass. I then did my own research and decided to either get Grado, Sennheiser, or Shure. I tested out the Grado (80i) and they are nice for classical music or high notes... definitely have sound clarity but they're not so good with bass. They're also open.. meaning that others around you are more likely to hear the sound (this characteristic is better for sound clarity according to physics.. but this attribute then comes down to personal preference).
Next, I tried the Sennheiser 280 Pro and Shure SRH 440. I was in the store listening to the same song and literally switching between the two for the longest time ever. The Shure's had a bittt more sound clarity (hard to notice though.. I have an ear for music though) but I liked the name of Sennheiser better so I was conflicted. The store attendant without a doubt recommended the Shure's though as he said he's been testing variousss models of the Shure's over the years and they are always better. So I took them and indeed they were awesome as well as have a lot more bonuses to them as opposed to the Sennheiser. Both are around $100 (depending on the website.. the Sennheiser's are sometimes listed as up to $20 more expensive.. it's very easy to get them for $100 though and the Shure's for less even). So I had the Shure's at home but I decided that I still wanted more bass and did even more research.
Ultimately, people are recommending the Audio Technica ATH- M50 like no other for bass. Honestly, all the websites that compare the Sennheiser's, Shure's and Audio Technica's recommend the AD's for bass and say it's magnificent. Apparently they're heavier and don't have a detachable cable, but that also comes down to personal preference/ sacrifices. And of course, this is granted within the given price range (mine's a little lower than yours... you might be able to find better headphones that are about $200... even the Sennheiser 880s or something.. up to you). Some of my friends are also recommending the Sony 7506 or AKG 240, but I personally have done no research on them and haven't come in contact with them. From what I read in reviews and in general the satisfaction with the bass and everything I would recommend the Audio Technica's ATH- M50. I am going to order mine online today.
