What are the best in ear headphones on the market?

Q. Price is not a fact right now. Ok, maybe it is a factor, but i'm curious to know what brand makes the best in ear headphones.

Are Sennheisers good? I saw this one ( http://wize.com/headphones/reviews/sennheiser-cx-300-consumer-headphones ), but I'm not sure if it's the best.

Are Shure ( http://www.shure.com/PersonalAudio/Products/Earphones/SEModels/us_pa_SE210_content ) good?

Answer
Sennheiser and Shure are both good companies. IMO, you probably want to check out Etymotic, since they originated the concept of high-end in-ear headphones. They sound amazing and many people swear by them over $600 studio headphones.

How do you burn in headphones?

George

I'm looking to get a pair of V-Moda crossfade LP2 headphones. And the reviews suggest to burn them in. Could someone explain to me some ways to go about doing that?

Answer
Burning in is just playing "noise" or music through them for a long time (usually 100hrs, but has been higher with more expensive headphones). Some people suggest using different "noises" (white noise, brown noise, blue noise, etc), but you can just have music play through it. Its suggested that the volume is to be set slightly louder than your comfortable listening volume.

The "idea"(im using this term loosely) of burning in is to break-in or "loosen" the drivers (speaker) in the headphones because they sound better after the burn-in.

You will find people who say burn-in doesn't work while others say it does. Though people who deny the effects of burn in say its a placebo effect, unlike a placebo, there is no real negative outcome from burning it in.

I want MP3 headphones that are so small no one can see them like in school. Wireless one preferibly, black in color, small so not noticable, and anything else that will hide it. Heres an example. http://www.arriva.com. These are perfect but theyre for iShuffles only and I have a 4 Gen nano.
And no CD Player sized headphones. Just wanted to make that clear.

Answer
These are wireless Cerulean F1 earphones. A bit bigger than your example, though :(
http://www.digitalmania-online.com/ipod-wireless-earphones

Then there's this Sony Bluetooth Stereo Headset; fairly the same size as your example.
http://www.antonline.com/p_DRBT160IK-NX_644837.htm

Here are Sennheiser MX W1 Totally Wireless Earphones. Quite small, so be careful not to lose any of these little guys. +2 other kinds of earbuds :) (WARNING-they are quite expensive)
http://www.metaefficient.com/headphones/best-wireless-earbuds-ipods.html

http://www.wirelessipodearbuds.com/what-are-the-best-wireless-earbuds-for-ipod/

This, too, is similar to your example.
http://www.kleer.com/purchase/digifi_opera.php

http://www.coolgadgetszone.com/2009/01/01/headphones/kleer-digifi-opera-wireless-earbuds-for-ipod/

It all depends on how much you are willing to spend for your earphones, too. Think about it carefully and make certain that they are compatible with your nano.

Hope I could help and Good Luck ^_^

What's the best set of wireless headphones available?

Dalton

I'm really sick of cords in general, just wondering what some of the best performing and most reliable sets of wireless headphones are. Price doesn't really matter, I got money in the bank (lololololol), I'd prefer something that isn't too huge and has REALLY high quality sound.

Thanks in advance!

Answer
Like the two other people wrote:

Sennheiser RS 180

This over-the-ear model from Sennheiser, which includes KLEER uncompressed digital wireless technology, provides very good sound quality. Overall, these headphones have a neutral character, with a slightly pronounced upper bass that has good impact and definition. Midrange is mostly smooth, but is a little etched and lacks fine detail. Treble is smooth and fairly detailed, but upper treble is recessed. Dynamics were decent, and the sound was slightly closed in. These headphones are generally comfortable, and were lightweight for their type, with only light pressure around ears. The velour ear pads might feel hot after prolonged use. We found it difficult to adjust the volume when wearing the headphones. The included wireless transmitter can work with up to four separate headsets. The headphones also come with an AC adapter with international outlet adapters, a detachable mini-plug-to-mini-plug cord for connecting the transmitter to an audio source, a miniplug-to-1/4-inch adapter, and miniplug-to-stereo-male-RCA "Y" adapter.

I am taking the TEAS test in a few weeks (I know cutting it close). I have been out of school for years and am nervous im not going to know anything on the test. I am hoping to get a few tips on what to look forward to on the test or any books, study guides, etc. to help me study. Thanks for any help!

Answer
Get somebody to check on you every half an hour, like a parent or older brother/sister. Tell them to force you to study for 1/2/3/4 hours a day, no matter how much you want to stop.
The single most important thing is to TAKE BREAKS! This is not just me rambling on, it has been proven again and again by scientists. Every 45 minutes take 15 minutes break, you brain is physically unable to absorb any more information at that stage. but during breaks, don't watch TV, read, or go on the computer. This will only distract you and you'll loose track of time and not go back to your work. talk to somebody, but tell them in advance to stop you at whatever time. And don't text people, your phone is your worst enemy! turn it off! Give it to a parent to mind until you're finished! Let the charging run down!
Planning in advance what you want to study helps, like "Today I'm going to study all of chapters one, two and three in science" and don't stop until you've finished them (but still take breaks).
Make a study plan, like "I have three weeks until my history test, and 75 chapters. i want to have three days before my test to revise everything, but only skimming through to refresh my mind. That leaves my18 days to study 75 chapters. 75 divided by 18 is four chapters a day and three extra, which I will do on Saturday 18th." i know that sounds complicated, but just break up how much you have to do for each subject for how long you have left. write it down for each subject so you don't forget it.
i mentioned skimming through everything there, which is something everyone i've told to try found it amazing. I can't remember what i studied two weeks ago, but when i was studying it i made notes, pictures spider diagrams/ word webs for the major topics. if you don't know how to do these look on google images or something and you'll see it's a word in the centre with different parts on that subject coming out of it. for example the centre word(s) may be DIGESTION in a circle with the words teeth, stomach, liver, etc. at the end of a line coming out of it. then in turn incisors, canines and so on coming out of that. try using colour, you're more likely to remember it then. the day or so before the exam read over these notes (which you must always keep together in a folder of A4 pad).
for the distractions at home, my advice is everybody has a room with nothing in it. mine is my dads' study. yes his laptop is in there but i can't access it or if it's a TV give somebody the remotes (but the are not allowed watch it). i've already told you to get rid of your phone (that's what distracts most people).
if it's siblings or people distracting you, tell them fine, if the want to talk the can, then hand them a book and get them to test you or (a personal favorite) teach the (even if they already know), explaining stuff to them in simple terms and in your own words. get them to respond to this with questions and then break it down even more. if they can stand this, then great, they're helping you. if they can't, then they can either put up with it (your exams are more important than their gossip) or they can shut up and leave.
give people no excuse for distracting you, I'm giving my dad headphones for Christmas so he can't play his music in my face, and my mom her own copy of Romeo and Juliet so she'll stop stealing mine.
good luck, and hope this helped!

What would be the best headphones i should use to record vocals and edit music?

Jacob D

Im not looking for any in ears, either on ear or over ear, and should i avoid noise canceling? I am looking at "Beats Mixer" "Beats studio" "Beats Pro" "Sony Studio Quality headphones" And I haven't really looked into Bose. I record vocals with a Reverb so I will like to have the be able to work with what ever headphones I use. At the moment I have Sennheiser's.

Answer
In terms of 'Studio Headphones' the only brands I've owned are Roland, AKG and I've tested a few pairs of Shure SRH headphones, which were actually owned by 'Studio Engineers' (nuff said really).

Although you're considering those Monster headphones, there are cheaper alternatives as stated above. You might also want to look at a pair of Audio Technica ATH-M50 headphones. Personally I'd stick with AKG (professional headphones) or the Shure SRH range

You could look into 'Acoustic Engineering'

Are the ipod and zune outlets the same size?

Channy

my friend has an ipod, and i have a zune 30g, she has ipod speakers that hook up to the outlet(not the headphone jack, i forgot what its called) and it looks like the same size as the one on my zune, can it work for zune, i don't wanna force it in there and break it...?

Answer
I'm sure it won't fit. I have an Ipod and a Zune. The Zune and Ipod connectors are both different size. The Ipod connectors can only fit the ipod series + generations. And it is a bit wider than the Zune connector. I haven't come across any kind of universal dock yet that connect both. It's either a Zune or an Ipod. There are chargers that can let you connect any USB , not sure if you are looking for that. http://uk.gizmodo.com/e1146773526.jpg
If you want a dock or a connector for your zune, you might want to look for Zune accessories instead. Don't worry, the Ipod USB connector cannot fit even if you force it.

Hello,

I'm currently looking to buy some high end headphones but I want to try them out first. Stores like Bestbuy barely has any to test out and they never have the ones I see online (specifically some highly rated Audio Technica and Sennheiser branded ones)

Does anyone know of a good place in NYC where I can try out most of them??

Thanks!

J&R, downtown near City Hall.

They have no problem letting you listen to anything. Except in-ears, of course....

What do I need for a complete home recording studio?

best headphone dac under 100

best headphone dac under 100 image

oli

I'm about to buy a recording set online, but I've never had one, so I don't really know all the things I need. I don't want something professional and expensive though, just a little set so I can work on my music.

Answer
Here are the five basic tools that
every home studio needs:
1. A recording device
For a perfectly good digital
recording device, look no further
than your computer. Your built-in
sound card will probably work fine,
but if you're serious about home
recording, you should consider
investing in a sound card made
exclusively for that purpose, with a
high-quality digital audio
converter (DAC), microphone pre-
amps and MIDI input/output.
To record music on your computer,
you'll also need sequencing
software. This is software that
records either analog audio from a
microphone or MIDI data from
electronic instruments. Sequencing
software allows you to easily edit
and mix multiple tracks, add
effects, export audio files to CD. The
industry standard for professional
audio sequencing is Pro Tools
(comes with its own sound card),
but there are options for every
budget.
Computers are such versatile and
powerful home recording devices
that almost everybody chooses
this option. However, if you're a
firm believer that computers and
music don't mix, you can buy a
multi-track digital recording device
that records onto a compact Flash
card or even burns directly to a CD.
2. A good microphone
Don't skimp on your microphone.
Even with all of the magic of digital
editing and effects, you can't do
much with a bad source recording.
The best kind of microphone for
recording solo acoustic instruments
and vocals is a condenser
microphone. For vocals, you'll also
want a pop filter, an inexpensive
piece of material that protects the
mic from hard "p" and sharp "s"
sounds.
To record a full rock band, you'll
need to mic all of the instruments
separately using smaller dynamic
mics. You should be able to find
good condenser mics for under
$200 and dynamic mics for under
$100.
3. Monitor speakers and
headphones
Monitor speakers are different than
normal stereo speakers. They're
important in a recording studio
environment because they
broadcast the audio exactly as it's
being recorded, without "coloring"
or "sweetening" the sound [source:
BBC]. This is the best way to ensure
that your recording will sound
exactly how it did when you were
playing it.
It's common to record songs in a
multi-track format, recording each
track one by one (drums first, bass
second, keyboards third, et cetera).
The best way to do this is to use a
pair of headphones to listen to the
previously recorded tracks as you
lay down a new one. Good
headphones keep the sound in, so
the only thing that's recorded is the
new track.
4. A MIDI controller or
synthesizer
A synthesizer is typically an
electronic keyboard that can be
programmed to play many
different kinds of sounds. But
synthesizers come in many
different shapes and sizes, such as
guitar synths, wind instrument
synths and drum machines.
A MIDI controller is like a
synthesizer, but doesn't actually
produce any sounds by itself. The
instrument is literally a controller,
like a joystick for a computer
game. A MIDI controller produces
MIDI data which can be used to
play other synthesizers, whether
hardware- or software-based. For
example, you can use a MIDI
controller to play an electronic
keyboard plug-in like ProTools. Or
use a single MIDI controller to play
a whole network of interconnected
synthesizers and drum machines.
5. An audio interface
An audio interface is like an
external sound card. Instead of
plugging microphones and digital
instruments directly into your
computer, you plug them into this
external box that connects to your
computer with a single cord, either
USB or Firewire. The interface
handles the analog-to-digital
conversion, taking pressure off
your computer's processing power.
This is especially useful for laptops,
which don't have space for extra
internal PCI cards and generally
have slower processors.

What are the best headphones for under $100?

Macro

Taking only sound quality and build quality into consideration. Cosmetics, portability, etc are not an issue for me. I just want amazing sound quality that will last me at least 3 or 4 years.

Ideally under $100, but I would consider something up to $150 if it's leaps and bounds better than anything I can get for under $100.
Also wanted to add they are purely for music listening. Nothing else. I want flat response and a wide frequency range.
Oh that's another thing, no headphone amp. I will be plugging them straight into my laptop or ipod.

Answer
I would suggest the Audio Technica M50's and the Creative Aurvana Live's.

I don't own either, but I own the Denon d1001's which are supposed to sound very similar to the CAL's (they're from the same maker). I find them to be nicely balanced, so you'll probably like them. A lot of people seem to prefer the M50's, which are also described as a good all-around pair, but stronger than the CAL's when it comes to bass. I don't think you can lose with either choice. And you won't need an amp with either pair.

A wide frequency range doesn't matter unless you're listening to analog recordings. Also, the equipment itself has to be capable of producing those ranges.

As for flatness of response, I don't know how to interpret response graphs, I get the feeling it requires somewhat of a trained eye. A perfectly flat response wouldn't sound flat to the human ear (e.g. white noise), because of how our brains work. So a pair of headphones with what looks like a flatter response (to the untrained eye) might actually sound less flat. Also, freq. response isn't always important because when headphones are used with an amp or a dac, the amp/dac has a sound signature of its own, so people can often match their headphones with a contrasting amp to balance them out. For these reasons, I haven't paid much attention to graphs as of yet. Usually I can get an idea of a headphone's style of sound from hearing what people say.

For more info (and any audio question in the future) you can check out the head-fi.org forum. I'm pretty new to audiophilia, those people know a lot more.

I have a Palm Pre and the headphone w/mic that it comes with works but the earpiece doesn't stay very good in my ears. I want to use the iPhone headphones w/mic but the mic piece doesn't work. The tech at the Apple store said that as long as the plug ins are the same it should work. I'm hoping someone else has had this problem and found a solution.

They should work with no problems.
They both have 3.5mm headset jacks, so ANY headset with a 3.5mm jack should work on the iPhone and the Palm pre.

Ear Force DPX21 PS3 Headset and 5.1/7.1 Channel Dolby Surround Sound by Turtle Beach

This pair of headphones has a truly spectacular frequency response range. Despite the fact these are headphones, you will FEEL the bass reverberating between your ears! The fact that these work with pretty much any audio source you'll run across from stereo analog input to digital fiber optic is pretty sweet.

I've owned many headphones. Be it from cheap stereo to "pseudo-surround", such as the Plantronics Gamecom (pseudo-surround) and I even have a pair of the mid-line SHURE headphones (they have reasonable bass response), this pair will blow them away.

Sound is crisp in the mid/high range as well. For the price, you certainly won't be dissappointed! If you're a SHURE headphone fan, these will really impress you.

The only downside to these are the MASSIVE amount of cables that accompany them. It's not that there's many, it's just that they're really LONG (which is GREAT in most cases!)... Just remember you're going to have to bundle them if you're going to use them on your PC (as I do) so they aren't strewn across your entire desk.

Answer
Good brands to look for would be:
Shure, Sennheiser, Grado, Audio Technica, Sennheiser again, Ultimate Ears, JH Audio,
Head Direct/Hifiman, MEElectronics, Klipsch, Sennheiser, Denon, AKG, Beyerdynamic, Etymotic, Ultrasone, Phiaton, Bowers and Wilkins, Koss, and Sennheiser.

I know they're extremely popular right now, but if you want good sound and value for money, stay away from Beats, Bose and Skullcandy. I'd call them cheap plastic toys, but Beats and Bose certainly aren't cheap....

What are the best headphones out right now?

Tony T.

How come some headphones I saw on websites cost over $200? Is the quality better than iPod headphones or worst? Sum people wrote to buy the ones that cost less than $30. Those are probably horrible.

Answer
There are an overwhelming number of headphones from a variety of makers at every price point. However, quality varies. You should also consider where you'll be using your headphones (ie, at home or on-the-go). Fortunately, there are two amazing options that won't break the bank.

For home use, the Grado SR60 ($69 in USA) offer the greatest value. The sound is so crystal clear and detailed that it feels like you're immersed among the instruments! It sounds significantly better than most $200+ headphones (and it obliterates any overrated, overpriced Bose crap).

For portable use, the Koss Portapros (<$50) are legendary. They've been a bestseller since the 80s and sound almost as good as the SR60. Koss's lifetime warranty is another reason to buy these.

I own both these headphones, use them everyday with my iPod and laptop, and find them extremely comfortable to wear. If I had to choose only one, it would probably be the Portapros, simply for their portability. There are many reviews written on these two models, if you'd like another opinion. Ask any audiophile and they'll attest to their greatness in sound and value. Just remember that more money does not always equal better sound quality.

Answer
Hi there,
unfortunately the card doesn't support DTS.
It is mainly designed as a headphone amplifier, in this regard it is an excellent card for the money.

If your primary usage is for headphone listening this card represents an excellent choice, although I personally upgraded from this to an ODAC+O2 combination.

If your primary usage is to use the surround sound and DTS is important I would recommend the Xonar HDAV cards, I had the full size card with daughter board and loved it.

Is this a good enough setup for UDK and 2560x1440 gaming?

ThisIsaCoo

Hey guys, I'm building a new beast gaming and UDK computer. I want this to be future-proof for 5-10 years, and I can spend maximum of $4000 CAD (including everything). I am also getting into professional level video editing, plus I consider myself an audiophile. Also, everything is being ordered from Newegg.ca. Anyways, here's my specs:

MB: Asus Rampage IV Formula
CPU: Intel Core i7 3930K
RAM: Corsair Vengeance 16GB
GPU: 2x Asus DirectCUII GTX 670 4GB
PSU: XCLIO Gold 1000W PSU
Case: NZXT Phantom 630
Sound Card: Asus Xonar Essence STX
OS: Windows 8 64-bit
Cooling: Corsair H100i
Optical Drive: Asus DRW-24B1ST
Hardrives: WD Red 2TB, Samsung 840 Pro 128GB
Monitor: Achieva Shimian QH270 2560x1440 Korean IPS Display
Other: Byerdynamic DT 990 Pro audiophile headphones

This all adds up to slightly over $4k. Will this be future-proof for 5-10 years?

Answer
Make sure the RAM is 1600 or 1866MHz. For gaming? It will definitely need to be upgraded GPU-wise but likely not for about 3 years. Have you seen what it takes to run Crysis 3? If you have the extra money, go for two 680's or even 3 7970's. That way you'd be REALLY future-proofed.

Also make sure the Hard Drives are at least 7200rpm if not 10000 since the within 5 years SSD's will probably be the norm.

Stick with Windows 8. Four thumbs up on that, since 7 will be obsolete within 10 years I'm willing to bet.

Have a nice time building, and good luck! This is a really nice system you have here. Great job choosing parts.

I play an on-line game with my sister and we often talk about calling each other on our cell phones while we are playing because we can't always type to each other in-game.

What program would be best that would enable my sister and I to talk to each over on our headphones & mic while still playing our game together?

What system requirements are needed? When I test my headphone/mic set, it plays back static and I can barely hear myself.

Answer
use skype....while playing the game

How do you hook a headphone/mic to the computer?

Stephen

I want to use one of those headphone/mic setups for voice chat on the MMO I play periodically, but don't know how, or if you can, hook it up to the pc.

Answer
You just plug it in. If you are using it for chat during games I recommend getting a headset with a USB connection - the Logitech ones are very good and reasonably priced.

Using a headset+mic with USB connection means you can still have ingame sounds set to speakers while voice comms comes through headset - or pipe both to headset, but have music playing through the speakers.

Once connected, you can swap sound device in windows by going to the speaker-volume icon - right side of your start bar - right-click > adjust audio properties > audio > default device=headset. then open an application. go through and change again to pick speakers and open the other app. (Windows won't change the sound output device for an application until you close and relaunch so you can setup which sounds to pip through speakers/headset)

The other option is having a headset that connects to your sound-out and mic jacks on your soundcard, but this means getting in behind there every time you want to swap sound between headset and speakers - which becomes a pain very quickly.

How dangerous is listening to music thru headphones?

And are in-ear headphones even more damaging? What if I'm just listening to talk shows/movies thru headphones and at a moderate level?

Answer
It's only a real danger when your volume level is over 70% (on a normal pair of earbuds) and your listening to them over 90 minutes a day.

Go to a club or something playing music, that's louder and worse for your ears yet no one hears about those being as bad anymore.

What are the best headphones out right now?

Michael

I wanted the headphones by Dre but now I'm not sure. I've read the reviews and Read they aren't very good. But what headphones can I get with great quality?

Answer
Stax SR009. See link below. Ok, so this is the answer you get when you ask what is the best and you don't specify a budget. And $5,250 is just the headset, you also need a control box and that will set you back another couple of grand.

I actually owned a pair of Stax headphones in the early 90's. I think I paid around $1K for them. I will say that by far, they were the best damn headphones I had ever heard. They can truly substitute for some nice high-end speakers.

If you suggest me Skull Candy or Beats by Dre then I'm going to report you to Yahoo.

Answer
Not sure why you don't want Skullcandy. I personally have a pair of Skullcandy ink'd Earbuds and they are fantastic for only £15 from Currys

If you mean Headphones, over the head ones, then I'd go for Sennheiser, even the budget ones are good from them.

What are some great earphones for Ipod Touch ?

c.Sky03

Im looking for an awesome pair of earphones , which ones should i get ? Im willing to spend around 60 dlls, any suggestions ? Any specific brands ? (Earphones only, no headphones please).
EDIT: Im asking this because the ones that come with the actual ipod sound kind of crappy, i need a pair that sound loud and clear.

Answer
i absolutey DISAGREE with musicalone8123. Earphones don't sound CRAP, it's what earphones you get, and what you churn out of it. If you for ever are only going to play some crappy Music files into it, then they'll always sound crappy but anyways. I have had countless pairs of earphones and headphones, and i have to say, earphones have gone a FAR FAR way from what they used to be. The first pair of earphones that pop inot my head before ANY under 60 dollars is the Creative Ep-630, They are $20-$30, Powerful Lows, Decent mids and highs. These are designed for bass, so if you're using it with an ipod, you want to turn the EQ to TREBLE BOOSTER, or your music will be drowned out by the bass. For a Budget of $60, i would have to say that that's the best you can go, cuz, if you want BETTER SOUNDING earphones, you're just a bit short. for $80, you can have a pair of Ultimate Ears Metro Fi 2, or Altec Lansing UHP306 (Improved version of Metro Fi 2). and For $90-$100, you can have a pair of Ultimate Ears Super Fi 3 Studio,Shure Se110, Altec lansing UHP336. Also, when coming to the Music Producer in the Earphones, i would try to Balanced Armature Drivers, but sadly, these are only present in Top of the Line earphones which are Expensive for the Average Listeners.

I would try to stay away from Sony, Panasonic, Phillips, and those "BRAND NAMES" because, the Sony MDR series does sound pretty decent, but for the price, they are not worth it. Some Brands that i highly recommend are Shure, Ultimate Ears, Westone, Creative (Only for the reason of the Ep-630, nothing else), and Altec Lansings Upgrader Series.

(ALL PRICES ARE RETAIL PRICES)

Earphones i highly recommend:
Creative Ep-630-$20-$30-100% recommendation
These are slightly over but, if you can find these on the internet for around your price, Then i HIGHLY recommend these.

UE=Ultimate Ears

UE Metro Fi 2-$80-Precison Dynamic Driver/Earphone
Altec Lansing-$80-Precision Dynamic Driver/Earphone
ShureSe110-$100-Single Balanced Armature Driver/Earphone
UE Super Fi 3 Studio-$90-$130-Single Balanced Armature Driver/Earphone
Altec Lansing UHP336-$130-Single Vented Balanced Armature Driver/Earphone

When you want to go Above an Beyond...
Shure Se530 (My Current)-$500-Triple Balanced Armature Drivers/Earphone
UE Triple Fi 10 Pro-$400-Triple Balanced Armature Driver/Earphone
Shure Se420-$400-Dual Balanced Armature Drivers/Earphone
Westone Um2-$300-Dual Balanced Armature Drivers/Earphone
UE Super Fi 5 Pro-$250-Dual Balanced Armature Drivers/Earphone
Shure Se310-$300-Single Vented Balanced Armature Driver/Earphone
Shure Se210-$170-Single Precision Balanced Armature Driver/Earphone

Hope this has helped, good luck on finding YOUR pair.

What are a good pair of headphones for around 50-60$?

Tommy

I recently bought some Razer Electras and my brother really liked them, so I want to get him something that is similar in quality but different in looks. This is definitely a case of quality over looks, although good looks would be a bonus. Also, headphones that have good bass are preferred. Thanks for the help ;).

Is this a reasonable request from my college dorm admin?

best headphones noise cancelling 2012

best headphones noise cancelling 2012 image

anon

I am a sophomore in college and I live in the dorms downtown Chicago. My dorm is on the 8th floor of a high rise directly next to the L train. The train never stops running, so one passes by my window every 5-10 minutes 24 hours 7 days a week. This wakes me up every single time the train passes and I cannot sleep throughout the night. I have become exhausted and it is begining to show in my school work. I would like soundproof curtains so I can sleep easier, but I am a student and I can't afford them. Would my school/ dorm provide them if I asked? I lived in this building on a higher floor facing a different way and noise was not a problem so I know it is not just me being picky.
I also didn't choose what room I get to live in..

Answer
Perpetual sleep-deprivation can weaken your immune system, chip away at your physical and emotional strength, and have an impact on your school work. Loud, permeating noise can be very difficult to acclimate to, and many would struggle living next to the L train. It's not like you're dealing with the typical nuisances of a dorm environment. Unfortunately, soundproof curtains are not literally going to be soundproof. They will sponge up some of the sounds that trickle in from other rooms and outside, like conversations, music and TV playing at normal volumes, and the like, but are ineffective at meaningfully minimizing sound decibels as high as the L. The sound decibel level of the L train is probably around 100. A top-of-the-line, professional-quality, custom-fitted soundproofing curtain will often have a STC (Sound Transmission Class) of 35 at best. The type of noise-reducing curtains you'd find at a store like Bed, Bath, and Beyond usually only have a STC of around 5-10, so they would do very little to soak up the flood of noise in your room. We had them installed in my bedroom at home when there was a lengthy construction project going on next door, and I could still distinctly hear most of the sawing, hammering, and the like.

It's doubtful your housing office will pay for the curtains, but hopefully they might consider moving you to another room if one is available. If your school has a student health care center I would go and talk to someone about the physical and mental toll the incessant noise has caused. It's not a trivial matter.
Ask him or her to please write a letter on your behalf describing how the noise has adversely effected your overall wellbeing and ability to perform at your best as a student. Then submit that letter along with a polite letter of your own requesting a room change to the housing office. At this point in the quarter / semester the chance that another room you could move into is available is slim, so you'll probably have to stay put until at least winter break. If your school is like mine, many of the students will go on a study abroad next term, and will vacate their spots in their dorm rooms. This is how I scored an amazing room last spring. Ask the housing office if you could take one of those spots. I think this is something they'd be more willing to do than pay for curtains or other sound-reducing items.

In the meantime, try to get something that will create "white noise" to help counterbalance the sound of the L. An inexpensive box fan might help. You could turn it around to face the wall if it's too cold to have it blowing into the room. Noise-cancelling headphones would be great, but they're very pricey. The less expensive ones don't really diminish noise, and the ones that are better made have higher prices, like around $300. I wrote a blog this summer with other ideas for making your room quieter, though it might not be as helpful to you since you're dealing with exceptional noise: http://thesoultodare.blogspot.com/2012/08/how-to-get-some-quiet-in-dorm-room.html

I hope everything works out for you. There would be footprints on all my walls from me running up them if I had to deal with sounds of the L all day and night, so you have my sympathy and my best wishes.

Answer
How about any of these to think about. You don't have to get any of them as a gift IF you don't want to, but it might give you ideas or something comes to mind.

I have $300 to spend on a great pair of headphones. I've looked at the Monster Beats by Dr. Dre Studio headphones. They look very nice and from the reviews they sound great. I would like to know if these are good headphones to choose. And what other headphones are good that are NOT in ear headphones! Only headphones that are over the ear like the Monster Beats. Thanks!
