How do I check overall quality of headphones?

Sometimes it's kind of difficult to understand quality of headphones just by reading specs on the packing. For example, Defender headphones made in China costing no more than 10$ have the same specs as Sennheiser Pro headphones have. A manufacture doesn't always tells all the truth, I guess.

quality sound
Clear bass
Crispness
These are the basics. Go for branded ones like Beats, Sony, Panasonic, Senheiser etc. They costs more but are good too.
So before buying compare and read public reviews to be sure. :)
