Headphones + Mic combo (phone headset) causes others to hear an echo?

Matt S

I have a headphones + microphone corded phone headset for a 3.5mm jack. The mic is separate from the headphones-- you can plug in any pair of headphones to the mic portion of the device. Well, this headset worked fine for a couple months, but now people who I talk to using it report hearing an echo of my voice. Not just a faint echo, but it literally sounds like I am simply saying things over, as if the sound is being outputted twice. It doesn't matter what pair of headphones I use; the echo is still there. I am wondering if there is anyone out there who knows much about this sort of thing and why it might be echoing like this.

Apple Mic with Headphones on Windows 7?

chh1266

How can I make my Apple earphones (they have a mic) work on Windows 7 HP laptop as both a mic and earphones? Or does it work automatically, although my laptop has a separate port for mics and earphones? Thanks in advance.

Answer
This mic/headphone combo should be detected automatically and work automatically, if it does not, try launching windows update manually to get a driver for this device. If you still have a problem, please verify you set the mic/headset as default recording device in the windows sound settings (under control panel)

Does the microphone work in any other programs?

There could be a variety of problems preventing your microphone from working. As an avid voice chatter, I've dealt with many an issue that I've had to work around.

First make sure that the microphone is plugged in to the correct slot (it's usually color coded pink). Most headsets have both a sound and a microphone plug. The plug for the headphone speakers is light green.

Second, go into your volume control panel (assuming you're running Windows, it's usually in the lower right of your screen, it might be hidden by the little < arrow which you can just click to move out of the way). Make sure your microphone is not muted or turned down.

Next it gets a little complicated. Some monitors and webcams have built in microphones, and they might be set as the default sound input device, meaning your computer will ignore input from your headset's microphone.

Go into your control panel and double click "Sounds and Audio Devices." Click the Voice tab and check the dropdown menu in the Voice Recording section. It should be set to what your soundcard is (your headset is usually plugged into your sound card). A common brand many computer use is Creative SB or SoundBlaster.

If none of that works, try to run your microphone setup in the Yahoo! program and see if that works.

If nothing at all works, drop me a line on Yahoo! Instant Messenger at senaria86 and I can help walk you through the problem. :)

(PS: I'm usually invisible so if I appear offline, send me a message anyway.)
