How do I keep long lasting headphones?

April

Yesterday I bought a new pair of headphones that look like this http://images.craigslist.org/5G95F65Hd3K93I83M1c6ke93849bb294e1313.jpg and I want to know what I can do to keep them for a long time because in the previous times they would end up having the music on one side and it irritates me.I have not open them yet but as soon as somebody gives me helpful advice I will. This is my first time using this brand btw.So any suggestions?

Answer
My Sennheiser HD414 headphones (original, not anniversary edition) are over fifty years old and in excellent condition.
The PX-100 folding phones have been to five continents, 30+ countries and have no damage.
Both sound as good as new and of course they have Sennheiser build quality..

Cables and jacks can suffer easily with a bit of careless handling and then the sound goes in one channel, then the other. Also the connections to the drivers inside the phones can be poorly done with just a quick bit of solder and no cable anchors or other support to protect the joins.
Those on your link don't look like rugged phones so you'll need to be conscious of what you're doing with them all the time.
Putting them into a pocket or a bag with other things rattling around them is likely to do some damage very quickly..

It's best to stick with highly respected brands with a good reputation amonst professional users who need reliability and good sound quality.
No good having the phones pack up half way through a radio show or a recording session.
Sennheiser, Beyerdynamic, Grado, AKG and Audio Technica are all used in professional studios and they do phones for home and outdoor use too.
Sennheiser make complete custom built consoles for studios and their phones are used by the majority of the world's best airlines for both flight crews and for passenger entertainment.
Private aviation is also well catered for.
That level of expertise in a company trickles through to domestic products as well. The other companies mentioned also have a lot of expertise outside of the high street headphone market and they all produce good reliable products.
A budget price phone from one of those can be a much better buy than a higher-priced phone from fashion-name companies so you can imagine where lower-priced phones from fashion companies will lie on the list of what's worth having.
