why wont my headphones work on the computer?

Emma Peck

Basically, whenever i plug into my headphones and try to play my music through there they always seem to fail.. so i tried to take matters into my hands. I started by opening the playback devices and finding out which one was my headphones and i tried to configure them and when i did the test it was fine, but when i tried to play my music again it wouldn't work i also noticed that those bars tha\t normally goe up and down when sound is made none of them where moving so im stuck ...help?

Answer
If you hear sound on your headphones during the test but not from media player then your headphones are fine. if the bars don't show on the equaliser then no music is being played so its prob your MP3 files.

How to determine sound quality in headphones?

Mike

What specifications should I be looking for and what do they mean?

Answer
The best way to test a set of headphones is to actually try them out! If you can go to a store that has several for sale, listen to a sample of music and compare the differences.

Unfortunately that option is not always practical. The next best thing to do then is to read some specs.

First I would pay attention to frequency range. The human ear can detect sound frequencies in the range between 20HZ (really low sounds) and 20,000 HZ or 20 kHz (really high pitches).

A set of headphones should have a range as wide as possible. Additionally any speaker (including headphones) is not able to reproduce the frequencies evenly. Some headphones might have a bump in higher frequencies, or may not be able to put out a certain mid frequency as loud as the signal which is put into them. A frequency response graph will show you how evenly the speakers reproduce sound. The flatter the graph, the better.

Finally make sure that the headphones are right for your purposes. Some headphones are isolating (meaning they block all outside noise). These are nice to listen with, but they can be very large and awkward. Also if you are tracking vocals with them they can be hard to hear with.

Other headphones are open, or semi-open. These tend not to block as much outside noise and can be much more comfortable. However the drawback is that you can be distracted by other noises.

Obviously price-range is a biggie too. But I will let you determine that for yourself. Try to listen to the headphones and compare before you buy. Otherwise pay attention to specs and look for reviews to hear other people's opinions.
