Can Hear from headphones but not from speakers?

Pawel Bryj

I have a Pavilion dv7 and i plugged in speakers to it, it didnt work so i took the speakers out, but now i cant hear normally from the laptop, but i can still hear from my headphones, what do i do to hear the sound from the computer?
i dont have the settings turned on headphones.

Answer
Headphone jacks usually have a contact inside them that is pushed aside when headphones are plugged in, disconnecting the speakers. Normally, headphones are used for privacy so the speakers are disconnected. When the headphones are removed, the contact can then return to place, reconnecting the speakers. Some jacks are pretty cheap, and it doesn't take much to bend the contact, thereby preventing the speakers from ever reconnecting again. Your options are to take the computer in to have the headphone jack replaced, or just forever have to use headphones.

Oh, one more option. Speakers didn't work from the jack because there wasn't enough power to drive them. But you could plug in POWERED speakers, which would sound better than the internal speakers, anyway. You can buy inexpensive powered speakers from Walmart or Target for $10 & up.

What makes good headphones/speakers?

like what are good specifications of good headphones. which also brings me to the question of why do monitors have bad speakers? But overall what kind of specs make a good speaker? just wondering so i can learn more about speakers

Answer
i fast way to learn about good speakers is the price. Go to an electrical store and compare products, ask people who work there about speakers & compare the information on the boxes.
I guess it's got to do with output power as well. The higher the better.
Also if speakers rely on the electronic device for power, the speakers are weak & quiet. If they have their own power source, like they need a DC power point to work or take batteries, they are general louder & better quality.
Also stick to brand names. At lest then you are guaranteed warranty & good service if anything was to happen.
You can also look out for input / output options. So they can take digital input as well as the old methods of cables, optical or infer red.
I guess as a general rule that the more you spend the better quaility, but within sayign that do your reseach first & try and get what you pay for! Good luck :D
