Can you split a headphone splitter?

Ryan

So I have a two-way headphone splitter, but I need 3 headphone jacks. Can I buy another splitter, and split one of the jacks of the original splitter for 3 headphone jacks? Will I lose any audio quality/channels?

Answer
Yes you can split an already split output.

BUT .... headphones are rated at a certain number of ohms, 4-8 ohms is fairly standard. The output of your player will work best into a single 4-8 ohm load. Every time you split the output it will make the load the player sees as half what it is expecting .... so two sets will appear as 2-4 ohms and 3 sets will appear as 1-2 ohms etc etc.You can eventually expect to lose some quality and/or level but BE AWARE that if you plug in significantly DIFFERENT headsets into the splits you will get different levels in each set, possibly robbing one or more other sets of audio or quality completely.

There is a point where splitting and splitting again will just not be viable, then you need to buy a specialist headphone splitter ... but you really don't want to go there.

I suggest you get onto E-Bay and search for "audio splitter" or similar and you should find stacks of Chinese sites and one or two Australian sites (if you live in Australia) offering splitters for two or three bucks DELIVERED (make sure the plug configuration matches your particular device). Order one, wait a couple of weeks until it arrives and try the three-way split ... if it doesn't give good results you've only lost a couple of bucks.

Alternatively you can buy a re-transmitter that plugs into your headphone output. Everyone can then tune into the transmitted FM frequency and hear the same as you. No wires and no loading problems ... but more expensive.
