Headphones and portable Amp preferences?

Robert

Hi im looking to get some over ear headphones that can deliver some real powerful sound (mostly bass) that work great with Phones or Laptops.

Id also like to know what you feel the best brand / model for sound and bass would be. also if its worth buying an headphone amp to accompany it? also with make / model of amp

i listen to almost all styles of music but mostly looking for powerful bass for Rock/Pop/D&B/Dubstep kind of stuff.

i have a 600w sub and amp kit in my car and i know you will never get bass the same as that but ive listened to Sennheiser HD380 over ear head phones and they have some pretty nice kick. but reading reviews they says that they are "meh" for proformance so im wondering what are the top of the line best headphones out there for pure bass and if they need to have a portable amp with them so i know what to shop around for.

looking to spend maybe $500 but willing to go as much as double that if it will really blow me away for powerful bass and sound.

for $1000 i can pretty much buy a Sony 7.2 surround sound system and hook that up to my laptop / phone for music and they have 2 powered 10inch subs running off the amp. so im trying to weigh up something on equal power for private listening.

Thanks in advance guys and girls for you feedback
Looking at the HD380 specs vs the HD650 specs what is better for powerful bass?

Frequency Response10 Hz - 39.5 kHz
Impedance300 ohm
or
Frequency Response8 Hz - 27 kHz
Impedance54 ohm

im not sure which one would have better bass?

Answer
I own the Sennheiser HD650's have had them for several years now. I also design, install, and calibrate high end audio video systems, I am also very familiar with the best in high end headphones.

The HD650's are great no question, they do need a headphone amplifier to get the best sound from them. Are they the right headphones for you since you like heavy bass ? Well although i find the bass accurate, they are a dat lean in the low bass below 50hz so they will not give you that real punch you maybe after. I think they are great, pretty detailed, very musical, and give you a honest representation of the music. I think the bass they do reproduce is accurate and has enough punch for me, but you may like a more exagerated bass like many others.

There are headphones with more punch which you may like better, but they are not accurate, they tend to emphasis the bass more than they should.

You may actually give a listen to there cheaper cousin the HD600's they are not as accurate and detailed as the HD 650's but do have a dat more punch in the bass.

There is also the Monster Beat Pro's which many like, and certainly have more punch in the bass, but again are less accurate.

Another would be the Beyer Dynamic DT880's they also have more punch in the bass, are pretty detailed.

Forget about the HD380's not in the same league.

Also forget about specifications it tells you nothing about sound quality of any audio equipment.

As for headphone amplifiers. Well one it would depend on what your source material is. If your strictly going to listen to MP3 files (which is a mistake if buying high quality headphones since your not going to get all that the headphones are capable of producing) not to mention that bass from Mp3's (along with the rest of the sound) is dynamically compressed, you may really want to consider playing high quality music files, at the very least CD quality 44.1khz 16bit. You can burn cd quality files on your computer and portable devices. There is also high resolution files from places like HD Tracks which are up to 192khz 24 bit.

Reason I say this is if you are thinking of playing higher resolution files, you should consider getting a headphone amplifier and DAC combo so you can decode high resolution files.

A killer and reasonabled price and very good sounding headphone amplifier DAC I just discovered is a really nice combination with the HD650's. Its around $699 called the HIFI M8. its available in different configurations and is even portable with built in rechargeable battery for listening outside the home.

I heard it at the high end audio show this last June and it sounded very very good. It has great flexibility adjustablity and drives the Sennheisers nicely, and Im sure just about any other headphone.

Any other questions feel free to ask

How can I get the most out of my Sennheiser HD 595 headphones?

Hello

A couple days ago I purchased a pair of HD595s, which will get here sometime soon. The question I have regards producing high enough quality sound to serve these headphones justice. I understand that an ipod cannot nearly drive these headphones as they should sound, as the reproduction is poor, but I do not know what I need to buy to get to that "hi-fi" level?

I have read about headphone amps, and will probably purchase one sometime soon. Any reccomendations? Also is there even a point of using a headphone amp with an ipod or will the sound still be poor?

One last thing, I am also looking to buy a decent firewire interface to start some recording projects (RME Fireface 800). Will this sound card reproduce the high quality audio I need to enjoy my HD595s?

Answer
an amp/dac combo like the fiio e7 will be fine for powering the HD595's. It doesn't act as a dac through the ipod output though.. only an amp. when plugged into a laptop the dac in the fiio bypasses the laptops dac so you'll get a better sound. the hd595 is a high sensitivity low impedance headphone so they can be powered pretty good without an amp but i feel they sound much better with one. you could always get a separate amp and dac to use with your ipod. I've always liked Ibasso products... you could look into them.
the last question is a little out of my knowledge
