How to Shorten Headphones?

Is it possible to cut and tape the headphone cord and have it work like new without going through the trouble of soldering; like they way you would with speaker wire?
I don't trust myself with solder.

that seems like a waste of time and probably won't work very well. If you go to walmart (or target or probably any store like that) they sell little plastic things that look like thread spoils that you can wrap your excess headphone wires on. It's in the section with the headphones.
