Why do artist use headphones while recording a song?

Q. I notice artist while they are recording in the recording studio they use headphones over their head to listen to the music that is being played without the music actually being heard in the background so their voice isn't covered over by music that is being played while their singing and so their voice will sound crisp and clean without all that extra sound and echoing you get while trying to record with music playing but what I don't understand is how can they sing well without hearing their own voice?

It just seems odd I'm a good singer but even I sound a little off key when I'm listening to music and singing at the same time how can they do this without this problem occurring? Are their any music artist that know why they do this?

Answer
Headphones in the recording application are used primarily for the person whose recording to monitor themselves. This is applied more to voice actors and people in radio stations where music isn't as involved. This is also because what you think you're singing or speaking doesn't mean it will sound the same to a listener. You might think you're a good singer, but try recording yourself and compare. You might be surprised.

If they're singing over the instrumental track, then they will hear the music and their own voice. Plus the headphones that most recording studios use will be open-back (they let in sound/leak sound) so they'll be able to hear themselves quite easily. They can only listen to 1 side of the headphone if they need to.

so i read that the purpose of headphones while recording is so you can hear your real voice when listening as your normal voice can suond different when being listened too. how can i set my headphones so they do this? i want to wear my headphones and be able to hear my recording voice?

Answer
People wear headphones all the time when recording. The types used are high quality, professional (closed) headphones.

The purpose is to hear yourself sufficiently while recording, and at the same time stopping what you hear on the headset bleed into the recording microphones.

Some singers may prefer to lift one side of the headset away from the ear as it makes it easier for them to sing in tune and get some of the "live" voice they are used to hear. It is basically a training and experience thing though. Most experienced recording vocalists/singers sing perfectly with the headset full on.

Of course you will need a good fold-back system (that's the monitoring in a recording session). You will need to hear the recorded music along with your voice to be able to track your voice properly.

Some times the singer prefers just a couple of the instruments blended with their vocals.
