use Marshall mini-amp as preamp?

Antoine

I wonder if I could use a Marshal MS 2 as a preamp in order to use amplitube 3 or guitar rig?

guitar-->MS-2 IN-->MS-2 out-->line-in macbook

Answer
The only output on the MS-2 is headphone out, so I presume that's what you are planning on using. Read the bottom paragraph for how to do that.

On that amp there are no other components between the speaker and the headphone jack, so it's basically just a low power amp (about 1 watt) that doesn't need to be cut back for headphones. Many people don't understand what "line input" means. It means an input jack at a line level. "Line level" is a standard value that is generally 200 millivolts and is compatible with normal stereo equipment such as CD players, cassette decks, stereo receivers, etc. that generally use phono plugs. It is not considered directly compatible with microphones of any kind, guitars, guitar amp speaker outputs, HEADPHONE JACKS, or anything else that drives a speaker or HEADPHONE.

There is a way to plug a headphone output into a line input without blowing anything. Get one of those little inline volume controls meant for headphones (Best Buy, or any other large chain electronics store will have them - I generally stay away from Radio Shack, but in this case even they would probably have something usable), and you can use that to hold the otherwise way-too-loud signal from the headphone jack down to a level that will be reasonable for the line input. Good advice is to start at the lowest level then carefully adjust for sound quality.

can i use a headphone amp / phono preamp to boost the mp3 signal to run it into a class T amp?

im recommended to use any powered mixer all i need is to bring up the mp3 signal to line level so that the amp can then amplify it all the way, the rolls mx51 is recommended, http://www.rolls.com/product.php?pid=MX51s but the phono preamps but phono jacks are much cheaper, and theyre already made to boost audio signal out except from a phonograph not an mp3, anyone think this wont work?
by the way, im going this route bc its the lightest and cheap its not meant for a car

Answer
I wouldn't use a phono preamp unless it has a selectable RIAA curve on/off switch, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RIAA_equalization.

From one of my previous answers:

The power unit from the Philips SBA1503 portable speakers will do exactly what you want to do (I do the same with my HTC Touch Pro2 smartphone and portable MP3 player) and it runs on 3 AAAs so you have to remember to turn it off after each use but it is cheap and since it is self powered there is no power connection to the car hence less chance for ground loop noise. The 2 speakers plug into the power unit with a standard 3.5mm plug, just unplug them from the power unit and plug in your cable to the amp instead. http://www.amazon.com/Philips-Portable-Speaker-System-1503/dp/B0047Q0G70

Another answerer on the same question recommended the Boostaroo amp. http://boostaroo.com/store/product.php?productid=17521&cat=249&page=1
