What are some good headphone brands?

Alois Tran

I'm looking for a decent pair of headphones to ask for for Christmas, and obviously I am not exactly an expert when it comes to headphones. I don't want anything too fancy, or too expensive. I usually listen to screamo/metal/rock/alternative so I don't want any extra bass. Please help me out! Also I am looking for the ones that go over your ears, not the earbuds or anything like that.
Something besides beats, please.

My personal favourite budget headphones are the Sony MDR V55DJ, I recently tried a few pairs of Sennheiser in the same price range and they were really good too...The Sennheiser HD202 and HD205 are worth looking at...all three sound really good and are styled differently.

I picked up a pair of Monoprice 8323 (Stateside) or the Monoprice Premium (UK European) they are budget priced headphones, they sound great, aren't the most stylish or comfortable, for the money though you can't get anything better...and they have detachable leads which is unheard of at this price.

Have a read at the reviews on the Amazon links and try searching 'You Tube' for more reviews and opinions.

What are the best headphone brands?

If you could please give a ranking of the best brands of headphones, from 1 to 10, or as many as you can. Rank on best overall on all around headphones. Thanks

Answer
Good brands: Grado, Sennheiser, Shure, Audio Technica, AKG, Denon, Bowers and Wilkins.

Over-rated and over-priced: Bose and Beats

Plastic toys: Skullcandy

Beats are the current headphone choice amongst people who care more about looking fashionable than sound quality. They aren't bad headphones - they sound ok, but the price suggests that they should sound a LOT better. Bose spend a lot of money telling people how good they are. You know what they say - throw enough stuff against a wall, and some will stick.... They aren't great headphones, but they spend the most on advertising.

If you really want to know which are the best, you should check out what the headphone experts over at http://www.head-fi.org say. Read some reviews of the various brands I mentioned, and you'll soon find out what's good and what's not.
