Like not personal opinion or experience but just purely on the technical specifications of the headphones.

Answer
Nice to see someone caring about factual specifications rather than opinions.

Anyways, here we go.

The title for best over-ear headphone in terms of specs (that I know about of course) would have to be either:
The Sennheiser HD800's
or
The Grado PS1000's

The HD800's have an incredible frequency response of 6Hz-51kHz, while the PS1000's have an equally incredible response of 5Hz-50kHz. Not much of a difference there; both absolutely mind-blowing incredible! If you look at the frequency response graphs of each, you will notice that they are both very similar; very slightly boosted mids with well refined bass/trebble. However, the ps1000 response becomes a bit erratic as you move into the very high frequency range(not a huge deal). Both headphones have no audible distortion whatsoever. You will need a very powerful amplifier to power the hd800's due to their impedance of 300 ohms. The ps1000's on the other hand, could be powered through a standard mp3 player with an impedance of only 32 ohms.

Keep in mind, both of these headphones are over 1400 dollars and are very very high quality headphones. Both feature an open design to enhance acoustics.

Hope that helps.
Best of Luck

Need one in the range of 300 to 500 dollars, mainly going to be used for internet, social networking, video chat, and storing of family, friends pictures.
Thank you for your time.
