What is the difference between sensitivity and impedance?

I have been looking at headphones and was getting confused about the difference between sensitivity and impedance.
-I've been told that sensitivity is: The higher the rating, the louder your headphones will play.
- Impedance is: Generally, the higher the impedance, the more electrical energy is required to drive the headphones' tiny speakers. Because of the limited power available from a portable player, headphones for portable use should have a maximum impedance of 64 ohms. The lower the impedance, the more efficient the headphones.

It seems to me that they are counteracting each other, can someone explain the difference?

Answer
Impedance is a measure of the electrical resistance in the headphones. Usually only expensive audiophile headphones for the home will have very high impedance, and they are often sold with their own amplifier. The sensitivity rating is a real-world measurement of the volume output by the drivers, usually measured at a power level of 1 milliwatt. That's the only number you should be interested in. The two are related, but the sensitivity in SPL (sound pressure level) is what is important in actual use. Any unit with a SPL rating of 90dB or higher will be fine for use with a portable music player, though the higher the higher the number, the less high you'll need to set the volume on the player. Getting a more sensitive pair of headphones or earbuds can extend battery life a little bit, but basically anything you'll find for sale at a regular store will work fine for portable players.

How many ohms should my headphones be for Ipod?

How many ohms can my ipod power well without a headphone amplifier? How high of impedance headphones should i get with my ipod?

Answer
for an ipod you shouldn't have to worry about that. I had the ipod earphones with my 2G touch and they went quiet in one ear after about 1-2 months. so now i have in ear Sony earphones that are ridiculously good quaility and have great bass, noise isolating and cost about $80 AUD. just buy anything from sony, most reliable. my last ones lasted me for about 4-5 years :)

Earphones with what impedance should I buy for my laptop?
I have two choices,
1 Headphone Impedance: 32 ohms
2. Headphone Impedance: 16 Ohms

Mine is a dell inspirion 6400 laptop.

Answer
Headphone Impedance: 16 Ohms

Help! Can someone that knows please tell me what what does headphones need to have a good sound?

For example, I'm looking for a $30-$40 dollar range Earbuds with good bass sound and i don't understand what Response Bandwidth, sensitivity, and Headphone Impedance are? One of the earbuds that im interested on has 100dB / 1mW sensitivity, Response Bandwidth of 8-22 hmz, and Impedance of 16 ohms...Is This Good?

Answer
I don't know what you're looking at, but it's best not to go by specs but actual user reviews. In that price range, I STRONGLY recommend either Koss PortaPros or Sennheiser PX100s. Both are great headphones and the two top dogs in their price range. PortaPros are well-known for the ridiculous amount of bass they have, you will not be disappointed if you buy a pair of them.

EDIT: I didn't realize you were looking for earbuds, I didn't see that. Sorry. Try some CX300s, they're around $30 and they have plenty of bass.

Also, if anyone ever recommends Skullcandy to you, just walk away. They're garbage.

I have the SONY MDR-V700DJ. The Frequency Response is 5-30,000Hz.
The sony headphones i have are pretty powerful but the stem failed & that was my second pair. Anything with a higher Frequency Response. Any suggestions?

Answer
"The human ear can nominally hear sounds in the range 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz (20 kHz)."

a 5-30,000hz frequency range is pretty good. That's a bigger range than Grado Rs-1s which are pretty much the best headphones i've had the pleasure of trying.

Volume wise either get a headphone amplifier or get headphones with a low impedance. Headphone amp is the best idea - you can use high impedance headphones at good volume, which tends to provide a slightly better sound.

How can i wire headphones to a regular car stereo?

Q. ive got a dodge conversion van with headphones for each passenger. i want to run all of these of a radio but the radio has seperate grounds for left and right channel and headphones have a combined ground. they way DODGE did it was to just run the left+ and right + to the headphones and use the cars frame as a ground for the headphones. It blew up the radio, so now with a new radio, how should i do this?

Answer
You would have to get impedance matching tranformers for each channel and capacitivley couple the two channels.
