Surround Sound Headphones?

John

What is with everyone saying "surround sound headphones are gimmicks?" I understand that a lot of them are virtual and don't actually have 5.1 or 7.1. But if the audio even somewhat replicates a surround experience it isn't a gimmick. I feel like these audiophiles need to explain themselves a little bit. Just because it doesn't work as well as you'd like doesn't mean it is a gimmick, right? wrong?

I just keep reading forums with audiophiles saying that surround headsets are gimmicks and to get some nice stereo instead. But is this the right decision if you play games, watch movies, etc? Again, I just feel like everyone is not an audio snob, so try to be helpful instead of just saying "those suck," or "what a gimmick."

Any helpful advice on this dilemma? Surround headset or no surround for gaming? movies?

Answer
the reason they say that they are a gimmick is because when you have surround sound headphones you have 2 Speakers, sometimes 4 that only make it sound like they are surround sound. with out the actual fairly large space between the Speakers you would normally find in a room using Stereo Equipment you cant get a true surround sound effect. but as far as if you want them for gaming/watching movies i assume you will be using a computer, which means you will also be using a 3.5mm headphone jack(that's why the audiophiles say the head phones are a gimmick is because unless you use digital audio out you can't have true surround sound.) so if its only for gaming/watching movies you better off just getting a pair of normal headphones because they cost less and any surround effect you might get with the expensive headphones you can get using software.

John

I have 5.1 surround sound on my desktop and am going off to college next year where i'll be bringing a laptop. is there a way i can make the system work with my laptop?

laptop will most likely be hp, speakers are logitech

Answer
You will need an external (USB powered) sound card for the laptop that supports 5.1 most laptops just have microphone and headphone sockets, you need back, center and front at a minimum.
