I have windows vista, I have my computer hooked up to the tv and it was working fine. I came home and spouse said sound was off but didn't know how. I have checked everything from cords to device manager and found no problem. Does anyone have any ideas on what else I could check?

Answer
1. Check the volumn on your TV make sure it's loud enough.
2. Make sure the TV isn't muted.
3. Make sure your computer isn't muted.
4. Make sure the audio on your computer is turned up (near max)
5. Disconnect and reconnect the audio cable at both ends.
6. Make sure the audio cable is connected to the green audio out (speaker) port on your computer. OR try a headphones output port (sometimes on the front).
7. Make sure the audio cable is connected to the correct ports on the TV.

If you are using HDMI:
8. You can ignore what I said about audio output cord.
9. You should start by rebooting your computer and trying again.
10. Disconnect and reconnect the HDMI cable at both ends.

11. Re-install your audio drivers
12. If you used HDMI, re-install your video card drivers

Follow that one by one and it should get fixed. Otherwise it could be a hardware issue.

What causes high-pitched feedback in speakers?

Pandora93

I've had these computer speakers less than a month and the right one isn't working the way it's supposed to.
I can't figure out what it is, whether it's the cords or the speaker itself. All I know is when I connect the earphones to my computer-without going through the speakers first-there's sound in both headphones.
The speakers are Companion II Bose computer speakers, and I'm in no mood to have to call technical support-if I don't have to.

Answer
High pitch sound is the result of static discharge which is in turn the fault of the wiring. Try making sure you have completely set up your system correctly through your audio manager (realtek HD audio manager etc) Unplug and replug the whole system and it should work correctly

I'm going on a flight in a few weeks, and want some good [though low budget!] headphones. I'm wondering what's the difference between noise cancelling and noise isolation headphones? Would noise isolation headphones be just as good at disguising aircraft engine noise?

Answer
I think the idea is that noise cancelling uses the way the earphones are constructed to let outside noise in, but in a way such that noise in one ear is 180 degrees out of phase with the other ear. Our brains hear that and cancel the noise out, more or less.

I believe isolation headphones attempt to completely block out any outside noise, physically, ie, completely covering the ear with an insulating substance. Like ear muffs.

Even earbuds can be noise cancelling, but only the big headphones can be truly noise isolation, if I have my terminology correct.

If you want to hear as little as possible from the outside world, you'll want isolation headphones. If you want to be able to hear some things from the outside world, then go with the noise cancelling headphones. That has been my experience, at least. Unless I'm mixing/mastering, I prefer to be able to hear things around me. I sometimes do have to walk around at night due to job hours and whatnot, so I don't wear headphones that will impede my ability to hear the world around me (I also don't play at more than moderate volumes, I always look around me, etc).

Answer
Noise canceling headphones have a circuit that listens to the outside noise and sends an opposite sound to the headphones to cancel the noise. Sound isolation headphones are more simple. They cover your ears and have insulation inside the headphones to muffle the outside sounds.

What I do on airplanes is just get some cheap foam earplugs and read a book or magazine.

The headphones nowadays are very good. Maybe even TOO good. Will my generation (im19) have extreme hearing loss sooner than previous generations due to the potency of headphones?

Answer
I think that you have hit on a very important point. I am really scared about people today who are totally plugged in with headphones all of the time.
When I'm at the gym, nobody interacts with anybody else because they are plugged into their music and sometimes it is so loud I can hear it.
I think that yes, people will lose their hearing more quickly and you will see problems with deafness in a much younger population in the coming years.
I don't listen to my i-pod any more because of this. Just living in the world today is noise enough!

Christophe

I've been looking for something like this, wondering if it exists. Basically, you watch a movie on your computer, like normal- except the audio is streamed to your iPhone or other iOS device, so that you can put in your ear buds. So the net effect would be kind of like watching on your computer with headphones, but since you're connecting your headphones to your iPhone rather than your computer, you can walk around while it's playing. Anyone know of any app that does this?

best headphone dac amp combo image

Phillip

Answer
Hi there,

Headphones require an analog input. If you want to use headphones with a digital output port, you need a DAC (Digital to Analog Converter) - plug the DAC into the digital output port and plug your headphones into the DAC. Usually you would want an AMP between the DAC and your headphones so you can control the volume, so you are really looking for a DAC/AMP combo. And there are some lovely budget ones out there with multiple possible DAC inputs (USB - S/PDIF etc.) Do a search on DAC AMP on ebay.

hope this helps a little, Jim.

How does this setup sound?

cole

I have a pair of Sony xb-700 headphones and I just got a fiio E7 from amazon. I will be using my iPhone and my laptop. Is that a combo?

Answer
combo? not sure what you mean. Is that a good combo? maybe thats what you meant. yes its a good combo. The e7 had a DAC in it so you wont be using the DAC in your iphone or computer whatever your using. Apple and your computer company don't really worry about throwing a good DAC into their system, because most people don't care what the thing sounds like, so they save money, and it isnt priority.

So it should go iphone/laptop >>>> LOD cable(out of iphone)/ usb cable out of computer >>>>e7 >>>>>sony xb 700

You need an LOD cable out of the iphone, or you will still be using the DAC in the iphone and not the fiio e 7. USB out of the computer to the e7 you will be using the e7 DAC

You will always be using the amp on the e7, so you can play around with it . Listen to your headphones straight out of the iphone, then hook up the e7 and listen to the differences.

make sure your audio files are atleast someone good, if your buying from itunes your good.

If your looking to upgrade in the future.... out of your phone/E7/sony xb 700, i would upgrade the xb 700.

sony xb 700 are great headphones, but they are the weakest part of your audio chain in my opinion , so that is food for thought in the future. I wouldn't buy another headphone though unless your willing to drop $200+, anything else wouldn't matter much cause the xb700 are good for their price point.

Have fun!

oh and to answer your question, it should sound awesome.

I am currently setting up my first home recording system. I want to buy cheap and affordable equipment for singing. So far i have bought a microphone, headphones, pop filter, and a mic stand. What other items do i need?

I heard that i need a hard drive, audio interface, and mixer. what are these things? and do i need them ?

Answer
The other stuff you might need is going to depend on a couple of things:

First is the mic--you didn't say what kind of mic it is, but if it's got a cord with a USB connector on it, it's designed to plug directly into a computer. That will work fine, as long as you don't ever want to record two things at the same time.

The end of the mic may have three pins on it, like this: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/1/15/Xlr-connectors.jpg/800px-Xlr-connectors.jpg

That is what is know as an "XLR" connector, and it's the standard for microphone connectors.

If you've got a USB mic, you'll need to run it to a computer to record with it--I just did a quick check, and didn't run across any mixers or standalone recorders that will take a USB input. In addition to the computer, you'll need some sort of recording software. Windows does come with an audio recorder, but it's really limited in what it will do. I use a software package called Cubase, but there are others out there that people have had good luck with.

If your mic is an XLR, you'll either need an adapter to plug it into a computer, you can look at getting a mixer with a USB out to your computer, or you can get a standalone recorder that uses a hard drive to record your music.

A mixer is just a piece of equipment that allows you to take more than one sound source, and combine them. It can then output the sound to a computer or dedicated recorder. It allows you to set the levels of the sound (so that you get a mix that you like), pan individual sounds from right to left, and some of them include effects like reverb. In my home studio, I've got a 12 channel mixer that I run four or five keyboards, drum machine, and a couple of mics through. (It also came with a free copy of Cubase that I run on the laptop I record on).

If that sounds like a bit of overkill, look at a standalone multi-track recorder. These usually have a simple mixer built in, so they will handle the mixing, recording, and burning to a CD, all in one package. You don't get as many inputs, but if you don't need them, that's probably the cheapest way to go.

I'd suggest you get a music stand--that way, you can put a lyric sheet on it, and not have to hold it while you're singing

What do I need for a home recording studio?

I want to start a home recording studio mostly for rapping. I am going to use a laptop. I have a condenser microphone, a pop filter, a shockmount, a midi controller, headphones, speakers, and a software. But I'm confused when it comes to the pre-amp, the audio interface, the cables, and the soundcard. I'm not the best with this stuff but I'm willing to learn. Help and tips would be great and very helpful.

Will an extension cord for my headphones affect the sound quality?

Mindscrape

I got new Bose headphones but the 6' extension cord is shorter than the 16' I'm used to. I googled extension cord quality, and some claim that quality counts. I also saw some really cheap cord extensions on eBay, but I was wondering if they would truly affect the sound quality if attached. Any comments/suggestions?

Answer
Well, if you're just using Bose headphones, honestly, the answer's a resounding no. They're mid-fi at best, and just don't have the fidelity for cabling run length and impedances to be critical issues. People fretting about cables are using *very* high quality headphones, and even then, whether using Cardas .et all helps is quite arguable. For you, any 3.5mm patch will suffice for your needs, even if it lacks gold plating and looks real thin. Seriously.

Also, the Bose noise canceling headset sounds pretty bad, Cosnipa. $69 Grado SR-60s whomp it, frankly, and they're not suitable for critical listening.

I'll be listening to a song on the headphones and suddenly the volume will turn itself up or down or it pause the song! Very annoying! It also will play the music over the built in speakers and the headphones at the same time. Help anyone? please!! I payed to much for this to start happening! I haven't even had it for 2 months yet!

sometimes the iphones and itouchs get wonky and have a mind of their own. I think its probably the touch screen that causes this problem. Try turning the itouch off and then on again and see if that helps.

witch of these two headphone frequencies are better quality?

SSG.Wentwo

Frequency Response: 8 - 20,000 Hz
or
Frequency range: 100 â 18,000 Hz

witch is better quality and buy how much. (Is the one thast ebtter extremely better, just a little bit better, or around the same?

Answer
Frequency response is a bit misleading if they do not include the tolerances or deviation from the specification (the plus or minus 2 dB versus 6 dB that someone else mentioned). Also, who cares if they can produce frequencies lower than 20 Hz, since this is the low frequency limit of human hearing?

When an audio output at a certain sound pressure level (volume) increases to twice that level, this is an increase of 3 dB (decibels) over the original level. And, a decrease of 3 dB means the sound pressure level was cut in half (it sounds half as loud).

So, a difference in audible level of 6 dB is twice the 3 dB difference, or 4 times as loud or 1/4th as loud as the original volume.

In the example you gave, let's say the second frequency response (8 - 20K Hz) is plus or minus 6 dB, while the first one (100 - 18K Hz) is plus or minus 2 dB. Well, the first one might reproduce frequencies down to 20 Hz or less, but it's just not within that 6 dB tolerance. And the second one might produce frequencies down to 8 Hz if they have 6 dB of leeway. But, maybe they would only go down to 100 Hz or more when the spec is plus or minus 2 dB.

I would have to see a few more specs to determine which of these is the better headphones. And, of course, the bottom line is to listen to each set and pick the ones that sound the best, regardless of what the specs say.

How do I install a sound card into my computers hard drive (or tower) ?

Q. My computer does not have a sound card. There are no sounds coming from speakers when I plug them into the back, and when i put headphones into the plug ont he front. How can I install one, where do I get it?

Answer
I can tell you know very little about computers, so I will explain a few basics:

The tower is the case that holds all the computer hardware.

The hard drive is the hardware that holds all the software information, including operating system (Windows probably), other programs and data.

The motherboard (or system board) is that electronic "board" that connects all the hardware together.

Many motherboards have sound cards built in to them. If you have three small holes at the back of the computer case (the tower), you probably have sound already. If not, there should be a separate sound card already installed, usually in back at the bottom of the case. All computers made in the last 5+ years have sound cards already installed.

If you do not have sound, it's probably because your sound card is not working. Usually this can be fixed by a simple adjustment.

If, however, your sound card is really bad, you simply buy a new one at Best Buy (or similar store) and install it into a PCI slot inside the computer. Ask the clerk who sells you the card how to do it. The store may do it for a minimal fee, but it's so simple to do, ANYONE can do it.

How do I get my Medusa headphones working in Linux?

Sunny J

I have a pair of Medusa 5.1 surround sound headphones and I just got Ubuntu and they don't work. How do I fix this?

Answer
It depends on which Medusa headphones you have.

I have a Medusa headset (although I havn't used them with my linux machines) that came with a powered amp that has standard 5.1 surround sound jacks.

So long as your 5.1 (or higher) surround sound audio card works properly in linux, these headphones should too.

On the otherhand, if you have the USB Medusa headphones, you may be out of luck.

Googling various combinations of, "linux," "medusa," "usb," and, "ubuntu," didn't turn up too much help, but you may want to look into that further.

How do you make wired earmuffs bluetooth wireless?

mai_lundi

I will be getting a pair of 180s headphone ear warmers to help with the cold winters. Currently I have a pair of Kinivo bluetooth headphones that I pair with my HTC One phone, and I love the freedom wireless headphones give me. However, there don't seem to be any wireless hats or ear warmers, so I'm trying to craft a pair of my own. I've heard that all I need is a bluetooth receiver for the headphones (the headphone cord itself on the ear warmers is detachable, leaving just a female 3.5mm plug), but is that true? Is there an easy way to convert wired headphones into wireless ones?

Answer
Easy way? no.
You would need a battery powered bluetooth receiver and headphone amp.
This one would work, if you read Japanese.
http://www.audio-technica.co.jp/atj/show_model.php?modelId=1536
They sell for about $175 http://www.amazon.com/audio-technica-Bluetooth-Headphone-amplifier-AT-PHA05BT/dp/B0091IFFNE
The only model they offer in North America has permanently attached earphones

You would be better just using bluetooth earphones under conventional earmuffs.

I tried on a pair of Beats at target and I didn't want to put them down. I'm not really a fan of Nicki Minaj and those headphones had me listening to the whole song. I saw Michael Phelps wearing sol headphones, and if anyone can afford good headphones it is him. So I was wondering based on soud quality how do they compare to beats. Thanks

Answer
According to the August 2012 issue of Consumer Reports, the very best headphones at a reasonable price are the Grado SR80i studio phones priced at $100. They are the only ones tested that had "excellent" sound, and scored 86/100 in their tests. The Dr. Dre Monster Beats ($90) scored 76 - "very good", but not "excellent". A less-expensive set of phones with very good sound (score 71) are the JVC HA-FX300 at $60, or even the Sennheiser CX215 at $40. Anything above $100 is overpriced, you're paying for the name, not the quality. I personally use Cresyn CS-HP500's on-ear headphones with my iPod Nano ($40), which have been well-rated elsewhere, and I am quite satisfied with them.

What equipment should I get for a good home studio?

Parker

So i write a lot of songs and I've been recording them lately but only on my computer mic so I want better quality so tell me if this sounds good to you for recording equipment. I dont have that much money to spend but I already have a computer, but i am willing to spend more if it sounds really good. I'll be recording acoustic guitar, vocals, and later maybe electric guitar

First off I am recording in a fairly quiet room, but is a bit bigger than a small bedroom. I also have aularex foam wedges to put in the corners of the room

I have a mid-2012 Macbook Pro 13"

For the mic I am going for a Blue BlueBird. On sale and a music store for $229. Only want to spend up to $400 on the mic

Right now i have a little Behringer C-1 2-channel audio interface but i want to get a good upgrade. I was thinking about getting a Mackie 1402 14-channel mixer.

For my DAW im probably going to get logic pro 9, but i would eventually get pro tools 10 just dont want to spend that much for right now.

Of course I'll get a pop filter and mic stand so that doesnt really matter

For headphones I've looked at pro recording studios and they use Sony MDR7506 Headphones and they're only $140. Should I get those?

Since I'll be using a click while recording guitar im gonna want to get a pair of good isolation headphones. Extreme Isolation Heaphones EX-29???

And eventually I would like to get some studio monitors and do HS50M Yamaha studio monitors sound good???

So basically my question is does this equipment sound good for a beginner studio and if not what should i get instead

In the future I would also like to get antares autotune 7, reason, compressions ect.

Another thing what do you think a good mic for recording acoustic guitar is??? My thought was a shure SM81. What is yours?

Answer
All good choices.

The best you can get at your price range is the SoundMAGIC HP100 with the FiiO E9K amp, or the FiiO E07K amp if you need portable. The SoundMAGIC is very balanced and has great bass, but if you need more bass, you can boost the bass on the FiiO.

Shure earphones make two lines of products, for consumers and professionals, I own a pair from the consumer line, the SE210, MSRP $170 but I got it for $90 on Amazon. The cords are really nice and thick and sound quality is great, also they're in-earphones so they block out most of the outside noise. If $90 is too much, you can check out Amazon for a pair of SE110s that probably will be quite a bit cheaper. But in terms of build quality and wire strength, I couldn't be happier with Shure!

I have a newborn son (10 weeks) and I live in a one bedroom apartment. As my son transitions to his crib, which is in the same room as the home theater system, I want to set up a system whereby my wife and I can put on headphones (two sets total) and hear the TV. This way, the noise will not disturb my son. Don't worry about the lighting situation. I have that covered with some room divider screens.

I had an old device from Woot or something that was basically a bluetooth headset and headphone jack (two different pieces). I can plug the headphone jack into my receiver, sync it with the headphones and successfully watch TV that way...but I only have one set and I am unsure how to find or set up another. I am looking to do this cheap (definitely under $100, but hopefully under $50), and I haven't been able to find another similar product (bluetooth headphone jack/headphones). If I found another one, I'd probably want to buy two to replace my old one, and use a headphone jack splitter, but there may be an easier way.

Any suggestions as to how I can set this up? I don't know much about bluetooth, but are there any systems that can hook up two sets of bluetooth headphones to one bluetooth device broadcasting from the headphones jack (or an alternative jack) on my receiver?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
I use these Sennheiser RS120 On-Ear 926MHz Wireless RF Headphones with Charging Cradle from Amazon for $90. And two headphones can work off one transmitter..

I'm trying to decide between the sony pulse, Audio-Technica ATH M50, Shure SRH840 or the AKG K 271 MK II. I would like an all purpose headphone, music, movies and gaming. Which model would be the best to purchase? I thought the sony headphone was a good all rounder with having srs, bluetooth and bass control. Would it just be worth getting a high end pair of standard headphones? The current headphones i'm using are the sony xb700. Thanks.

Answer
Sony is MEDIOCRE ONLY, so go for more reputable brands instead (Sennheiser, Shure, Grado, Denon, AKG, Bowers & Wilkins, Etymotic, Beyerdynamic, Audio-Technica).
